James "The Amazing" Randi Lecture at Princeton: The Search for the Chimera

  • James "The Amazing" Randi in his visit to Princeton University in 2001, gives us his classic style of scientific scepticism mixed with his ability to expose the most irritating flaws in our society, and the fakers who push their tricks and gimmicks like a cheap drug.
    "The Amazing" Randi is the perfect mix of Science and Magic, a true conjurer of visual machinations that can fool our senses while, at the same time, explaining to us how our senses are fooled.
    In my opinion this is the best example of a "human mind debugger", he gets right into the machinations of analog tricks and sees how our brains mistakenly manifests them as a possible reality. Randi also teaches us that illusion and trickery may be comforting to the human mind, but truth is far much more wonderful as it shows us the machinations from the chaos, the sense as well as the awe in both the tricks and the real world.
    For several decades, Randi has gone on to expose hundreds of psychics and teach millions across the globe about how they could be fooled into believing in a system which could potentially make them vulnerable to trickery and perhaps psychical harm.
    Randi is not afraid to go against popular opinion, as shown in his battle against so-called psychic Uri Geller in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
    Randi has also gone against the bizarre practise of faith "healing" and contacting the deceased, and has exposed the cruel, callous and cynical nature of the people who claim to be performing "God's will", such as Peter Popoff.
    Randi has also warned us time and time again about the fraudulent practise that is homoeopathic medicine and how it is essentially water solution, dished out as hocus-pocus medicine.
    James Randi is the founder of The James Randi Educational Foundation, an organisation that attempts to bring reason to world by luring potential psychics into a trap, baited by a million dollar prize to prove their psychic "powers". "powers" here is a kind of vague term,as Randi knows, so the tests are usually on the so-called psychic's terms. No self-acclaimed psychic has ever won the prize.
    Whether or not some form of psychic power exists is still an open question, however many psychics often do not properly gauge their so-called skills and instead brag about them, hence scepticism about such claims should not be so strange to their ears. Unfortunately the vast amount of psychic powers they have seem to remove all self-esteem as many psychics are often uneasy about Randi's reasonable request and attractive reward.
    Regardless, psychic frauds come and go in droves but there will only ever be one James "The Amazing" Randi.
    Enjoy this lecture and help share his noble message of skepticism and critical thinking of irrational claims.

      Sadly, science is not respected today as it was in yesteryear. People are not as objective today. All the more reason why it is important to be rational and not given in to adolescent ignorance and superstition.

    RIP The Amazing James Randi for a lifetime of wonderful performances in conjuring, prestidigitation, hard-hitting skepticism and education. Your audience around the world was exposed to the wonders of your art and you left us with the tools we desperately need to debunk the frauds that prey on ignorance. May you always be remembered smiling!

    It greatly saddens me that James Randi is at the latter part of his life. I've been privileged to live through part of his life and to see the logic in his presentations yet people still believe in faith healers, 'magic' and the like. Although Randi no longer makes public appearances such as this, he has given his blessing on those who promote the same belief in logistical thinking he has tried to teach for so long now. CZcams's *CaptainDisillution* is one such individual who carries his torch forward. I thank JR for all his work :)

    Back in my late teens I had a court date coming up and had a plea deal worked out so I knew I was about to be takin a little vacation as a guest of the state and decided to sell my car.
    Got a buyer pretty quick and they offered more than I was even gonna ask and we met at his bank, he took out the money and I signed it over to em.
    Ran home and stashed most of the money (not an area ya wanna hold cash like that) and then went to the store.
    1st store I hit refused to take my $50 bill, fresh from the bank, sayin it was fake cause of the pen swipe results. So I asked for it back to take it back to the bank. They agreed and I paid with a different $50 bill. I went to the bank and looked it over and it all looked A1. Made it back over to the bank and explained the situation to the teller and they looked over the bill, then had a manager look it over, then informed me the bill was 100% authentic but swapped it out for me anyway 😂 Never trust those pens!
    I feel honored that he'd take me (Crooklyn, not Harlem) over the PHD. I most definitely agree. What's really dope is when ya get both together. I spent most of my life surviving in the streets. But I was taught when ya gotta sit down in a cell or at home ya should learn something. I was always into science, history, politics and religion so I've spent all my down time learning as much as I can as a drop out. I rarely meet folks around where I live now that can I can talk to about anything other than hood shit and sports. They're all smart. But they are so poorly educated it's sad. I'm nowhere near the smartest or best educated but I try and that's more than most people can say unfortunately.

    2. What is the probability of guessing two cards (the order doesn´t matter, so we are going to choose A and B):

      There were two cards in the envelope, each with one of 5 possibly symbols on it. From the way he phrased the question: "What are the mathematical chances of my guessing what one of these cards is?" Either card could have been a correct guess. That's 2/5.

    just to point out Randi's point of where is John Edwards?
    "In October 2007, claimed psychic John Edward appeared on Headline Prime, hosted by Glenn Beck; when asked if he would take Randi's challenge, Edward responded, "It's funny. I was on Larry King Live once, and they asked me the same question. And I made a joke [then], and I'll say the same thing here: Why would I allow myself to be tested by somebody who's got an adjective as a first name?"[90] Beck simply laughed and changed the subject."
    literally a pathetic excuse. Randi's name has nothing to do with it, Edward is too cunning to go becasue he has seen what Randi has done to guys before and knows if he goes on he will lose everything.

When asked about it Sylvia claimed she didn't want to take money from a godless person as James Randi. To that JR replied, *Isn't that the very kind of person you would WANT to take money from?* There were other equally pathetic excuses Sylvia used as well but ultimately she knew she was a FRAUD and that's why she never took his challenge.

    He is referring to the chance of guessing one card of the five correctly. For example, he if he were to guess what shape is shown on the "first card pulled out of the envelope". The way he presented his question implied that the statistic was for ANY of the two cards so it's his fault for not delivering the question unambiguously... he tried clear it though up by "assuring" that it's 1/5.
    So no, he didn't mess up, he just should have asked the question better.

      @Nixitur Před 5 lety +2

      @plaguelock It's been months, and I don't remember the exact scenario, and can't easily find it again in a two-hour video. But let's say there are cards labeled 1 through 5, and the envelope contains numbers 1 and 2.
      If you guess 3, 4, or 5, you lose.
      If you guess 1 or 2, you win.
      Clearly, that's a 2 in 5 chance.

    • @PDionneGosselin
      @PDionneGosselin Před 5 lety

      @plaguelock lol, lets say there weren't two cards, but all 5. What would be he chances that the right card is in the envelope? This isn't hard.
      I think ramsey might have meant if he were to pick one card at random from the envelope, then the probability would in fact be 1/5. But the trick involved looking at both cards (and comparing that to what he drew outside the envelope) so that's why people might be confused about what his meaning was.

    • @CharlieQuartz
      @CharlieQuartz Před 4 lety

      Randi asked, "what are the chances of me guessing what one of these cards is?" There are two interpretations of this question (like the part about order later on giving two answers), the first being guessing a card on one side of the envelope, in which case the probablitiy would be 1/5. However, the other interpretation would be just guessing the presence of a card in the envelope, not a particular one, which has a probability of 2/5, since there are two cards and either position could be a candidate for the card he guesses. It's the same difference that he points out later, where the chances of guessing both the cards and their positions is 1/20, while guessing irrespective of position is 2/20 or 1/10.
      Taking the second interpretation to the extreme, if there were one card in the envelope, Randi's probability of guessing the card would be 1/5 (this is identical to the idea of the first interpretation), for 2 it would be 2/5, for three: 3/5, four: 4/5, and 5: 5/5 or 100%, since all 5 cards are in the envelope and if he guesses any of the cards it is going to be in there somewhere.
