- Just when I thought it was too good to be true, the monkey’s paw curled and presented us with the most abysmal localized name known to humankind.
This is an apt representation of my mental state for the past 24 hours.

For context, the recent Nintendo direct revealed that an Ace Attorney game that's been out in Japan for 13 years already is finally getting localized. Since we were stuck waiting so long, some folks got together years back and made a fan translation with fan made names, so the whiplash from the canon names hit hard, especially with Eustace here, who was originally named Sebastian Debeste. Hope that helps, internet traveler.

this is such a wonderful video tbh I was in denial for a day when I heard cuz I was like "no way could it be that bad.... no way could they do my boy seb so dirty" and yet here we are.
similarly I dont have complaints for ray slash eddie and justine slash verity.
although I do think eddie fender is such a cheesy pun name, eddie still fits him (unlike.... our poor boy) and the name "Deid Mann" comes from the previous game so it certainly makes sense
If anyone's wondering - I'm actually kinda liking the new names. Sure, I prefer the fan names and the new ones are goofy as hell, but when have Ace Attorney names been anything else? (Just take a look at Apollo Justice). While I am a little disappointed in that regard since I feel the fan names are more fitting, this doesn't change the fact that AAI2 is getting an official release, which I've never been more happy about! My favorite game is relevant again!!!

how many paragraphs have i wrote on sebastian debeste since i heard of the name change? at least 8. how many rants did i go on (to seperate reciptacles)? at least 4, 2 very in depth. whats my verdict on his nw name? its uhhhh. well its not debeste but frankly idk if i could even call it a winner at all. perhaps the real pun was that Eustace Winner could not be any less of a winner in terms of names

Yeah about that. I originally posted this video to tumblr under the new name tags where everyone already had context and was going mental over these names.
Out of context I'm sure this video is one degree away from being incomprehensible.

I haven't played either of the Investigations games yet, but I sympathize with everyone's pain right now, as someone who went through the same pain with Great Ace Attorney and VASTLY prefers the fan translation names for most of the side characters in that game 🥲 I pretty much suffer alone though because so few people played that fanslation compared to the AAI2 one, so I go around shouting the Scarlet Study names from the rooftops and look like a crazy person probably because no one knows who I'm talking about lmao 🥲 I've been playing the "in the fan translation their name was-" game for yearsssssss lmao, it's rough out here; I sympathize but also selfishly am glad to no longer be alone in this oops 🫡 Though I've also been so exposed to the I2 fan names that I feel attached to them too even though I've yet to play lmao, so mentally I'll be sticking with them when I play, just like I do with Great Ace Attorney lol
If it makes you feel better, I believe Scarlet Study didn't change any of the names, they just used the names from the Japanese version (as DGS already had English sounding names for the English characters). So they are still official names, albeit less well known in the English-speaking fandom.
Personally, I prefer most but not all of the localized names. (why did they rename Benjamin to Albert? he does not look like an Albert)
“Stacy” is, in fact, a nickname for Eustace, and one of the first to show up on Wikipedia- another being “Ace”
I knew that it was going to happen, but it still hurts... Soon enough, there will be a whole new generation of people who will grow up only with this and the veterans will comment things like "did you know that in the fantranslation...", repeating history again...
But it is funny that they basically called Seb "fruity"
