Understanding and executing sweeps can be a tricky thing in the beginning...and well after, too. These are possibly the most important sweeps to learn early on, partly because the remain useful and high-percentage, and partly because the are rich in principles that govern all sweeping techniques.
There are multiple variations of these, and hundreds of sweeps from various guards. I focus in this video on these closed guard sweeps only:
1. Elevator Sweep
2. Hip Bump Sweep
3. Scissor Sweep
4. Pendulum Sweep
These are great sweeps by themselves or when combined with each other, other sweeps or certain complementary submissions.

Dude, these are the best instructional videos i have seen to date. Informative and not to long that i loose interest
Thank you! I appreciate that.
@@zacsbarnyard7436 - that’s not really true. I know very legit black belts with less than 10 years in. Personally, it took me 16 years from white to black, and that’s honestly a long time.
@@KnightJiuJitsuI’m a grey belt
@@zacsbarnyard7436schools and professors are not all equal. Some of them are handing out black belts after 6 years. Skill > belt color
@@zacsbarnyard7436 Every school is different. You can't use a cookie-cutter method with everyone.
I am a black belt in jiujitsu with 14 years of bjj experience. Those are the only sweeps I ever use! No need to get complicated! Fundamentals win fights! Thank you as always Professor!
Thank you very much for that comment and I couldn’t agree more! 🙏🙏🙏
Nice
Holy shit. If even a black belt says that this is what he uses, who am I to say a word? But, I agree. No need to get complicated.
I just took my first week of jujitsu classes I'm really enjoying it your videos are making it really easy to remeber the basics. I will come back to this post many times in the future.
I just had my first jiujitsu class last night and i loved it! This was a really interesting video and I appreciate videos like this to help solidify the concepts they teach in class. Thank you!
I pray every night that I’m the only one watching these videos from my state.
Hahahahaha
Good stuff! Thanks but can you make this where the other white belts in my gym can’t see it?
hahhahahaha
LOL.
You want them to know too. So you get better together.
@@guy0784 it’s funny how much more you lean and excel together and even more by passing on your knowledge, next level awesomeness.
Lmao
I love adding the push of the knee on the scissor sweep, especially against big guys. "If do right, no can defend" - Mr. Miyagi :D
Hahaha. Very true.
5:55 for the 2 minute version

Thank you, thank you, thank you
@KVMVKVZ they drop knowledge sometimes tho
Im new in jiu jitsu i train about 3 months. And u explain everything really easy and simple. Thank you. Oss!
Damn professor. My wife and I are both 3 stripe white belts. My wife likes playing guard but as of this writing she has zero sweeps in her arsenal. I know she will want to have these sweeps to beef up her guard game immensely. This video will really want her to practice technique with me in our garage. We have mats.
I’m so happy to hear that. That is one of the main reasons I make videos is that right there! Thank you!
I love the way you put these alternatives in context and connect them. Big fan.
There's beauty in all the basics of Jiu Jitsu. The mechanics of these are what the art was founded on.
I definitely agree with that
Studied traditional Japanese jiu jitsu for a few year when I was a kid, but relied purely on being a 6ft 225lb 13yr old. This is the kind of stuff I should have learned. Fundamentals and skill will win out over power the majority of times. Great video!
Jesus how tall are you now
Oh you did? Where at? Sounds like *cough* to me
@@TcBalkom took classes at the local leisure centre in the north east of England in the early 00's under sensei George (Geordie) chambers. Participated in multi school seminars. Enjoyed it, but teenage life got to be too enticing. How is it being an interner hater?
@@Mateoarredondo necro post but since I'm here. I believe I capped out at 6ft2 but given the amount of "6ft" people I meet, I figure I'm a bit taller lol
When I started off as a white belt, the third scissor sweep is what I used almost everytime. Eventually, though, the other white belts caught on and started making better bases and I couldn’t do it anymore haha
If they really base out to prevent the scissor sweep to one side, maybe you can switch to a butterfly sweep on the other side.
Hook the wide based leg, hip escape to the same side, and catch them by surprise? Just spitballing :)
are u me
I love that last one. Been done to me so many times by higher belts. Very effective. They usually bring the arm across their body with the same side hand and then scoop the leg with the other hand. Bingo!
I just learned something new: "sweep" in BJJ is not what one would think coming from a TKD/Karate background ! 😆😆😆 Great video!
Great Simple Detailed Instruction! Great Lesson!
Great details. Hitting a nice sweep is like hitting a nice line drive golf ball. Thanks for putting this information out there.
I always enjoy his breakdown of control the position than conduct the move. Excellent
So good brother. Awesome detail for such a high level explanation. Thank you 🤙🏻
Sir, that was EXCELLENT... Just what I was looking for. Thank you.
This was explained incredibly well. Thank you for talking through AND demonstrating multiple times. This helps me a great deal. Great job, professor!!
I appreciate the comment. I’m glad you like it!
Im a blue belt, those are pretty much the only sweeps i use from closed guard. That knee shield to scissor sweep is what started my guard game as a white belt. Knee shield is great.
Top notch tutorial. It all makes perfect sense.
My 4 favorite sweeps. Pretty much the only ones I use. Great video 🥋💪
I love the over-under sweep. The second sweep you performed. It's simple and so effective. Yes, it's good to mix up and go for more sweeps but I've always loved this one because of how simple it is to pull off.
Those were so smooth and quick to the point! That's why I LOVE Jiu Jitsu! Great video! Thank you!!
This channel needs more subscribers. Great content
Thank you for saying that!
Back to basics!!! Could you do a series about it? Nice video
I am working on that theme currently. I've done a few now with Budo Brothers for both of our channels. Check them out too! Thanks
This is an amazing channel great info, easy to follow and good pace!
WOW. These techniques are absolutely fascinating. Marvelous instruction, and really makes me want to be formally trained. Thank you!
Been at bjj for 3 months now and this stuff is finally starting to make sense thanks
what a good time to upload this video... today a newbie(first class) pinned me(1 stripe white) with my neck down in my closed guard and was stuck for a good 40-50 seconds. Usually other guys in my gym posture up when they are in top closed guard. I was confused when this newbie did the opposite. I wrote this scenario down to get back to my Trainer to ask him ways to deal with it and your video got to me before I got to my trainer. Thanks a ton !!! Just subscribed :)
That’s awesome to hear! I’m glad I could help at all and thank you for subbing!
Thank you! I'm only a week into learning BJJ, but even in my inexperience this taught me a ton! I'm not a very big guy, so I'm really learning to appreciate the speed, leverage, and technicality of BJJ.
That’s awesome to hear. Thank you, and good luck with your training!
still going strong?
Great comprehensible explanation of technique! Definitely subscribing
Fantastic as always !! Thank you so much !
Great sweeps. Great details Prof Eli!!! OSSS! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
just started jujitsu and this gets me a step ahead. thanks.
I’m new to Jiujitsu and truly appreciate these techniques. You’re awesome.
Love that you provided the no-gi alternatives!
I love this channel its stays real and realistic. I've been practicing muay thai and judo since the 8th grade judo was the closest to Brazilian jujitsu I've got, these videos is Always detailed and I learn something from these videos. Great value
Thank you again For the great instructional content.
Awesome instructional. I've been getting worked over at my gym and decided, as a white belt, I'd just focus on sweeps for the immediate time being and wanted to hone in on 3-4 sweeps. to get familiar with. Thank you for the post!!
awesome, gives me some direction instead of trying to use my scissor sweep for all those positions/scenarios you showed. Thanks!
im glad to say that after 3 years of doing jiujitsu ive earned my blue belt. i just wanted to come back to this post cause this is the first one i watched. thanks knight jiujitsu. i often come here and look at your videos to give me ideas and they help alot. 🤜🤛
That is so awesome to hear! Congrats on the blue belt! And thank you so much for the kind words and watching these.
@@KnightJiuJitsu thank you man your instrucions are always clear and the way you show things are very easy and simple to follow.
Great technique thanks I am getting ready for grading
Beautiful basic sweeps that work..well explained..thanks
Straight to it. Great video format for a quick review any time, even right before class.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that!

🙌🙌🙌🙌
Wonderful Teacher ! Thank you very much Sir !
Always enjoy watching your videos. Thank you so much
Thanks, now just to remember these sweeps til i get to the gym 😅
Dude you are an absolute badass.
You're really good at breaking down the movements, better than the stuff I've watched from the gracie boys, better than anyone I've seen to be honest. Please keep doing this. You are a superb teacher.
I really appreciate that so much.
Great instructional videos. Thanks for sharing oss
Excellent demonstration, cheers
These were the first ones I learned, but after a while only rolling with people like 40 lbs heavier than me I rarely even go for sweeps... needed a reminder! The scissor sweep can be so effective!
Absolutely. These are all scalable and applicable for bigger people. Just takes tons of reps
Very clear, precise and concise, great job! thank you
today's class will mark my 7th day going to Brazilian jujitsu. you video helped me sweep someone last class. my sensei was impressed will continue to come back and learn, and grow my skills. thank you for this video. 🧎🏾♂️
Thank you for telling me. That means a lot and good luck with your training!
@@KnightJiuJitsu thank you so much it's nice that experience black belts have no problem helping newer guys learn. I was wondering if u knew any hip stretches for flexibility that's my biggest issue
Great instruction once again!
Spectacular video as always. Great sweeps expertly demonstrated. Eli Knight is definitely my favorite CZcams Jiu Jitsu teacher. Thanks so much for all the videos.
That means a lot to me. I really appreciate it. 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent sweep instruction!
Great vid! Started my jiu jitsu journey this month! Thanks a lot for your great advices for beginners, was really helpfull!

Thank you!
Thank you so much for the great lesson!!!
Tks again for sharing precious knowledge, professor!
🙏🙏🙏
AMAZING lesson. Thank you. Oss!
love it, going to try these sweeps out tonight!
Jiu jitsu is like 20% things your body does intuitively when in a ground struggle. The other 80% is fine tuning it and learning when to apply it. When I first started training, I was like “oh this is how I stopped X,Y, or Z person from murdering me years ago.”
Man the art of BJJ is truly beautiful
One day id like to go to a live seminar by this instructor. I really like his instructionals really well made
I’ve got a few coming up in different places. Where do you live?

Awesome video!!!
Ive only been doing jiujitsu for about 3 and a half months. so far, the elevator sweep is the only one ive hit more than once on higher belts. thus far it is my fav sweep.
It never goes out of style either!
Thank you so much!! I joined a competition team at my studio....And I didnt know how to sweep! This saved me so much, thank you

@@BM-of6dg - Thank you so much!
I just created a patreon account for this. Shut up and take my money.
I too am a black. As time moves on I find I become more basic
Thanks for showing both grips (Gi & No Gi) I think Joe Rogan said it best if you live up north where everyone is wearing jackets Gi is best for you but if you live here in Florida where I do your average street fight is going to be beach style where they take their shirt off and sweat quickly becoming super slippery to grip onto.
Amazing video!!
This was fantastic. Thanks brother
