  • In this video Jay Nicholas ties a smaller (but deadly) trout streamer reminiscent of a Super Duper Spoon he used to fish back in the 1960's. This is an awesome baitfish pattern that can be cast, stripped, and swung for a variety of species and it's been effective for anglers all over the country.

Great variation of Dick Empies Golden Shiner aka the Goldie Dick used this in both fresh and saltwater and the fly was entirely made from Bills Body Braid

Theres a lot of us in SE Massachusetts still using the Goldie. I tie them the way you mentioned (Bills body braid) and in just about all colors. Brookies, bows and browns will take this streamer frequently. I use it a lot for prospecting.

Great tutorial guys. You don't see too many of them where the tyer works out a problem encountered when tying a new pattern. I learned a similar technique for tying a hackle collar using fibers too big to wrap on the stem. Thankfully I didn't have a bead in the way when I did it. Mitchell 300 yeah! My first upgrade from a 202. I have some super dupers too but a Mepps spinner was my choice for trout, but on 6#. I learned how to swing and induce a take when fly fishing from fishing those Mepps on rainbows. Thanks for another memory moment Jay. All the best to you!

Gee's I still have a Mitchell 300 that I got for Christmas in '65, my mom thought I would have a better go fishing that that than the Fly Rod I choose to start my fishing career with thanks to a little segment on the Wild World of Sports, they had this guy Joe Brooks casting in a wind. I go back a long time.

Cool fly! That will swing nice on the Santiam River!

Tied a few with light rainbow Kreelex. Didn’t have a #7 Alex hook, but found that a TMC200R was a close match minus the straight eye.
