An option would be to put some lead or lead free wire on the hook shank before laying a thread base.

This fly and other variations of it will Out-Fish the “white death zonker”

That pattern will smoke river Smallmouth Bass too!
I will add a little red hackle under the throat , for that bleeding-gill effect !
