Great smallmouth fly too. Tie ‘em up in white and black and fish both about 16” apart on a 9 ft. 3 or 4x leader.
Tons of fun on smallmouth streams. For lakes I like a longer leader. Tie ‘em with a monofilament weed guard and toss them into the downed trees and stuff. Tease them out into open water. You’ll be smilin’ like the butchers dog!

I like your flat mylar addition. I've been trying this fly for years with diff types of tubing. Which is a huge pain in the *#&. I'll deff be using the this from now on ha

One of the flies on my steelhead rig at all times. I tie some on barbless tube hooks and some of jig hooks. Either way the fly catches fish.

Thanks for the recipe on the white death Tim, really appreciate it. Any recommendations on brand of large size whip finisher? I like the wood handle on yours.

I use these, I also use a variation of your squirrel and herl with a white zonker and hackle, GSS instead of peacock herl that works just as well.

I can see this also working on murky water largemouth and fall rainbows & cutthroats well too.

My first steelhead came on this pattern, I really like the subtle changes you made to make the tie much easier!! Any reason you went red instead of orange?

Has anyone used different color zonker strips with success? Black, olive?

They all work, but the white is just a classic! Imitates a dead baif fish, particularly dead emerald shiners that steelhead love to feed on in the big lakes especially lake erie. One of the best patterns for lake erie tribs id recommend bringing some white ones, but with stwelhead color is almost everything so id also recommend olive, black, and brown colors too
