- Before the PS1 version of this game, I never had any idea who Shuma-Gorath was, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, here.
It took me even more years to discover that he's one of the villains to Doctor Strange. If it weren't for balancing the game, he'd be the absolute most powerful character in the game. He could destroy several galaxies at once just by approaching them.
His super combo, Chaos Dimension, is a two-stage attack. First, Shuma glows to get ready, then while he's glowing, you have to use a medium or hard attack to command grab the opponent before his glow is gone. Then he'll do the actual attack that has does a lot of damage.
Shuma is also unique in that one of his two throws sucks the life out of his opponent. It's fun to use this while the Soul Gem is activated. You can potentially get your Perfect back this way.
His specialty gem, like Hulk's, is also the Time Gem. Alongside speeding him up like usual, it also makes all of Shuma's attacks turn the opponent into stone. Use this all to extend your combos in ways you couldn't pull off before, like what I did in this video.

At the end, after beating the supervillain, Thanos, since Shuma-Gorath himself is a villain, his use of all the Infinity Gem doesn't free the heroes that were turned to stone on Thanos' stage.
With all of the Gems, Shuma-Gorath becomes a giant of unspeakable infinite power, making the entire universe and beyond his own destructive playground as he can do with it whatever he pleases.

As a side note, Japan loves this character, which is likely why Capcom put him in this game.

Alternate Shuma-Gorath ending:
The infinity stones grant Shuma immense power. But they also grant him wisdom, and a vision of the future. The universe would indeed be full of despair and suffering, and it would be beautiful... for a time. Eventually, out of sheer boredom, Shuma would turn to the path of benevolence and righteousness, and usher in a horrible new age of peace and prosperity! Shuma is outraged at this vision, and angrily casts the gems away. Though his quest was for nothing, his only consolation is if someone good got the gems, they might eventually turn evil.
Interesting fact. Shumah-Gorath is an interdimensional creature. Which means that the same Shuma-Gorath lives within multiple Marvel universes including comics, video games, cartoons and movies. Also, an interesting fact, infinity gems work only in the universe they originate from. Which means Shuma-Gorath can only use them in the one presented in this game.
Funny how all of the things he achieved in the ending were things he already could do in the comic (including the size thing).

Considering the Ancient One has died and that was a plot point in Shuma Gorath coming back, I'd say it's a high possibility. It would also serve to showcase something vastly more horrifyingly dangerous than Dormamu.
Blackheart could be a nice villain for him too

Here's a bit of useless trivia: Did you guys know that Shuma's first color palette in Marvel Superheroes was actually an Error? Shuma's original color is not Pink with a green iris, but the opposite... He's Green with a pink iris. This was later fixed in MVC2 :)
On the topic of Useless Trivia concerning ol' Shumi here: Did you guys know that Shuma Gorath's name was a modification of an HP Lovecraft "Old One" named Shub-nigurath? It's biology is similar to HP's character, but the difference is that the original was considered a feminine deity of birth and fertility, and she was said to have a thousand young.

A Lee yup!!! I would use all of my dads quarters just to play as Shuma-Gorath. Best character ever. He would stunt on everyone!!! Ahh I miss being a kid.
He is indeed one of the best if used properly... That's because he has a good amount of strange moves who makes him quite versatile, unlike the cut and paste characters like the "heroes" in this game with their "dragon punch" and "hadou ken" style moves...

Between Shuma-Gorath and Black Heart, I don't know which evil is less to deal with. Either one of them means we are fucked.

In this history wise: Tony knew Thanos Would come for the Gems, then he in a space station he tries with some gems create a weapon capable of killing thanos but he summoned Shuma, Shuma avatar, Shuma defeated Tony, but before Tony send some gems to Avengers, so Shura goes and defeat and pick the gens of 2 avengers, then Mephisto and Black heart tries to steal he´s gems , beatwen that Dr Doom feel it( beacause he can sense magic ), so with that Dr Doom designed a trap for Shura using Hulk, after the Black Heart defeat, he come to Hulk in New York abandoned park, Hulk with a Gem of Tony destroed Half of the city in the battle, but the plan of Doom isnt compleat, só he enchants Steve Rogers with magic so he can buy some time( for Rogers, he is trying to revenge half of New York ), when Rpgers loses, Shura is teleported with magic to a Spaceship going to Titan, Dr Doom knew he would lose, so if the gems are going to someone evil, Thanos would Kill only 1/2 of the population, when Doom dies, the Spaceship hits Titan and The Mad Titan uses the manopla to recover the gems, the battle for the gems start, but then, Shura defeat, because he is not from this universe, so the gems wasnt so powerfull against him
Evidently his throws replenish health which is unheard of in the game. Gorath also has excellent anti-air super rush. Just nasty all over.
Shuma Gorath is a difficult character to use, he is of the rushdonw style.
