This song reminds me of sitting in the backseat of the car with my family looking out the window. That was back in 2002 when I was around 11. Now we're all spread out over the U.S. grown and dealing with the reality of being adults. Forever though, that is the "something" that I'm missing. Family before the divorce.
I hope you folks reading this comment know that this is a musical expression of depression something that a lot of us have experience in John Mayer is a genius at putting it into words in a beautiful song let it be a healing tone for your soul
John used his calling so good here! We've all had this experience of feeling something's missing, but can't quite put our finger on what it is. John managed to codify it with lyrics and sing about it as a technique that works almost like an exorcism to help us eradicate this toxic feeling. I love it! Funny thing. These chords sound complex, but they aren’t that hard. For example, his hit Neon is much more complex to play. This one is pretty easy to learn and play.
Yeah, its in open E, why he plays it with In your atmosphere sometimes....so the chords are pretty easy but sound nice and full and complex. Tricks of the trade haha. although the "somethings missing" part does take some skill and right and left-hand cooperation.
I actually think the production on heavier things is really good. If it focused too much on being acoustic it would have been too similar to Room for Squares. I think the biggest mistake was playing Neon on an electric when he recorded it - that’s one that definitely should have been more acoustic

Yeah I listened to JM with my kids through the Continuum Album. I’m sure if they hear John Mayer songs they think of special times in the car.
