Hydropsychidae caddisfly larvae are aquatic larvae that live in rivers and streams. They are easily identified by their many branched filamentous gills on their abdomen.
Here are some other characteristics of Hydropsychidae larvae:
    They are slender and aquatic
They have a segmented abdomen that is usually hidden within a protective case
They have chewing mouthparts on their head
They have three pairs of legs at the front of their body
They can create silk, which they use to make cases
They have hardened skin on their head and on three thoracic segments
They lack wing pads or visible antennae
Hydropsychids are common in many of the world's streams, and some species can be found on the shorelines of freshwater lakes. Larvae of hydropsychids construct nets at the open ends of their dwellings, which is why they are called "net-spinning caddisfly".
Hydropsychidae larvae spend most of their life hiding in their retreats, waiting for food to get caught in their nets. The food they catch is mostly tiny bits of organic debris.
