      rafa losing to verdasco is not an upset did you see there 2009 epic match that went 5 hours , and the rest are legit .

      @@malcolmnorman5694 2009 verdasco was a top 20 player who reached SF beating Murray & tsonga. In 2016 he was in bad form without reaching reaching 4R of a single slam in 2015 , beat #5 Rafa in R1 only to lose to an unknown Israeli player in R2. It was a huge upset with worst result of rafa @ AO in his entire career.

    Tsonga beating Nadal in 2008 in a SF was not a "great upset". Same with Fernando Gonzalez, he was top 10 in the world when he beat Nadal in 07.

      @@franbatista9062 Tsonga was top 40 in the world and he had already beaten Murray, Gasquet and Youzhny so while it was an upset ranking wise, it wasn't as big as they make it out to be. Nadal was also unproven on HC up to that point. Chung over Djokovic was a much bigger upset and they didn't even include that.

    Why Wozniacki-Dokic is on this list ? Wozniacki was 17, outside the top 10 and had never reached a quarter final in a Slam in her career before

    Off the top of my head i remember Boris Becker having a few shockers.
    1985 as the reigning Wimbledon champ he lost to a no-name dutch guy Schapers.
    Also remember him losing to Wally Masur one year.

    Mark Edmondson (back in 1976) is still to this day the last Aussie male to win the Australian Open.
    Since then none of McNamara, Cash, Rafter, Hewitt, Philapoussis, Kyrgios, De Minaur etc could achieve it.
    Wouldnt feel too bad though, by comparison the last Englishman to win Wimbledon was way back in 1936, Fred Perry, 88 years ago.

    The 2017 R4 match between Murray v Mischa Zverev should have been added here. All cards were in Murray's favor being world number 1 at the time, and with Djokovic out. Of course, its anyone's guess if he would have beat Nadal or Federer.

      Roger would likely have beaten him in the next round, but losing to Mischa Zverev was beyond ridiculous. One of his worst matches.

      Murray never won the Australian Open. So maybe he is not a factor anyway in that Major. And it would be foolish to think Murray beating either of Federer and Nadal when the guy couldn't even beat Mischa. Also we all know how Murray became number 1 and hence the results proved.

    I mean, Nadal was just outplayed by 2 excellent players that reached the final, were top 10 for a good period of time and M1000 winners, but man, Djokovic just can't lose to Istomin. Definitely, the most disappointing defeat here in Australia and in GS in general.

    I would have put Verdasco over Rafa on here. Even though neither were at their best: Verdasco avenged his loss seven years later + came back from 2 sets to 1 down + bageled Rafa after being down 0-2 in the fifth + this was the only first-round Major loss of Rafa's career besides 2013 Wimby

      Not greatest ever upset caliber. Nadal hardly won 2 Australian open titles. He was very human in Australia. Verdasco a once great player peaked that day and beat him. Had it been fed or Novak, that's different

    Swiatek and Rybakina being feature here as main upsets in the tournament's history(!) together with the likes of Navratilova, Capriati, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic seemed rather odd IMO. They are good players but nowhere near to the status of the others, mostly considering how inconsistent the current WTA tour is

    To be honest, Rafa's losses before 2009 at AO were hardly upsets. I mean, IT was before he fully developer as a hard court player at the major level. Both od his losses in 2007 and 2008 came before his first hard court Gs final and also correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe Rafa did not even beat a top 10 player at AO before 2009.

      @@malcolmnorman5694 it was an upset because it was on clay and at Roland Garros, a best of five set tournament, but one thing that was an Achilles' heel for Nadal is any player with a huge forehand. Another example where he was beaten by a player who has probably the strongest forehand ever is at the 2007 Australian Open where Fernando Gonzales beat Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

    Wait, you have stuff from Swiatek and Rybakina, but nothing from Serena or Graff or any other true legends when they were defeated in stunning fashion by some up and comer (including when Serena managed to defeat Graf one time)? Not to say that Swiatek and Rybakina aren’t good, it’s just that they’re too young in their careers for anything to be of a “greatest upset in history” status yet.

    If we're going with finals, I was astonished Wawrinka beat Nadal in 2014. Yes, Rafa was injured, but I gave Stan zero chance as he never took from Rafa a set in 10 previous meetings. Misha Zverev beating Murray was also shocking.

      @@joniljoseph2934 in hindsight sure. But then you can say that for ex in hindsight Safin could lose to anyone at any stage so him losing to Johansson is not such a big upset. I gave Stan no chance against Rafa and that's the case for most. I didn't give Stan a chance against Novak in 2015. Only in his 3rd final with Novak I thought Stan has quite good chances to win.
