    Other than during Covid, I’ve had Botox every six months for the last ten years. As soon as I start feeling the benefits wane, I take Solifenicin until my next round. Even with a suprapubic catheter, without the Botox my bladder contracts with such intensity I get Dysreflexia rapidly. This has made my life much more manageable. The issue I find is problematic is ensuring good skin protection on thinly padded stretchers and while in the OR. Have brought a gel pad overlay to prevent getting breakdown while getting the procedure. I also prefer a spinal block to getting a general anaesthetic as it reduces time until discharge.

    I always thought botox was a facial beauty enhancer. I just learned something new form you. Well, thank you for sharing your story and as always blessings. P. S.----Don't put any botox in your beautiful face. Don't mess with perfection !!

    • @SandraHwheelchair
      @SandraHwheelchair  Před rokem +1

      It is true that is known for facial beauty but in the last decade it is used more for medical porposes. For example same thing can be done for the muscles of the legs of in the arms if the spasticity is too high. I did years ago also in my legs but the effect was too much for me...I was having death legs...couldn't do anything. Every day we learn something!

    My doctor and I discussed it and since the side effect of Botox is paralysis...we decided it's a bad idea. Please other people, don't do this.

    • @SandraHwheelchair
      @SandraHwheelchair  Před rokem

      Botox paralyses the muscles so for someone like me is it useful because I won't pee my pants. Of course, everyone should check with their doctor if it's ok or not for their situation.

    Bless your heart, 7 injections. I admire your ability to even go through with that procedure. But, if it helps then I'm happy for you. At least you're getting a decent amount of uninterrupted sleep now. So does this look to be a long term solution, you think? As far as fluids go, here people often drink cranberry juice for bladder issues because of certain chemical properties it contains. Not for spasticity mind you but to promote bladder hygiene, reduce risk of uti, etc. People with SCI (depending on level of injury) can sometimes be at more of a risk for uti from what I've understood.

    • @SandraHwheelchair
      @SandraHwheelchair  Před rokem

      I see it as a long term solution. Yes I drink also cranberry juice to avoid UTI but I have an hyperactive bladder and that means that the quantity that I can keep is low and also the need to pee is higher without medication or botox. Luckily in my case an UTI happens like 1/ year or less. I look also at the colour of my urine and if it's too dark than tea or water till the colour becomes clearer. The botox for the bladder doesn't have side effects ...it's only the procedure that needs to be done that is painful. For example years ago I did botox in my legs but it's not something that I would repeat because I use my spasticity from the legs functionally when transfering.

    • @lj8902
      @lj8902 Před rokem +1

      @@SandraHwheelchair Long term solution is a good thing. Too bad there's not some sort of very short acting systemic anesthetic instead of a local anesthetic that could be given. Yeah, that's thing drawback of cranberry juice when there's any type of overactive bladder issues i believe- health benefits but increased frequency of toileting. Can be rather inconvenient....

      @@lj8902 yes, what I did in the past 3 years is to recognize the signs that my body gives to me when for example something is not good and of course having some medical knowledge about important parts of the body like the bladder. But still it happens that I get signs but I don't know why...like why sometimes I have more pain than others. The human body is so unpredictable sometimes and probably you recognize this also.

  • @howiroll740
    @howiroll740 Před rokem +1

    Thanks for the update on your procedure. I'm happy that it's working good for you. I would be curious to know if this increases the amount of UTIs that you experience. My urologist told me that the longer you keep urine in the bladder the greater the risk of having a UTI.
    I use marijuana and I find it works very well for relaxing my bladder muscle as well as skeletal muscle spasms.

    • @SandraHwheelchair
      @SandraHwheelchair  Před rokem +1

      I think that as long as I try to drink enough liquids the chance to get an UTI will be low. From my experience to avoid an UTI you really need to pay attention at the colour of your urine...the darker it is bigger chance to get an UTI. For example if I see that my urine is quite dark than I make a tea or a glass of water and drink it immediately to clean from bacteria.
      I never tried marijuana...I only tried CBD oil but that was nothing for me.

    • @howiroll740
      @howiroll740 Před rokem +1

      @@SandraHwheelchair I have also tried CBD oil which is from hemp not marijuana, and it doesn't help for my muscle spasticity. I believe the terpenes in marijuana are what provide the relief from spasticity, rather than the THC, but I do not have concentrates with the THC removed to test my theory.

    • @SandraHwheelchair
      @SandraHwheelchair  Před rokem +1

      @@howiroll740 I heard from many other people with sci that are smoking marijuana or something that is with the THC that it helps for spasticity

    • @howiroll740
      @howiroll740 Před rokem +1

      @@SandraHwheelchairMy apologies, I should have said "better" than the THC. I know that THC does help relieve spasticity because I use pharmaceutical THC sold under the prescription name Marinol. However, based on nothing but my personal experience and observation of other quads, there isn't anything that will provide relief equal to that of a fresh green hit on an Indica or Indica dominate flower. That's where you'll find the terpenes and me 😎
