    I think it should've been clarified that taking damage while unconscious makes you fail a death saving roll.

    Never underestimate *Spare the Dying*, especially at low levels. A Grave Domain cleric is always a big bonus since they can cast it as a bonus action and at range.

      @rburt3 Před 5 lety +20

      warfilgames Yep, that's a must-have in the toolbox for sure plus it actually heals HP unlike StD which only stabilizes. However, at low levels when spell slots are hard to come by and resources limited, a clutch "Spare the Dying" cantrip can be the difference between continuing to adventure and re-rolling a new character.

      A Healer's Kit is 5gp for 10 uses of stabilisation, basically replacing the need for Spare the Dying once you have sufficient gold. Even at level 1, your background usually gives starting gold, so at least one person in the party should buy a healer's Kit or two so that they can stabilise others.

  • @geoffreypeterson8903
    @geoffreypeterson8903 Před 5 lety +328

    I kinda hoped they would clarify an often overlooked part of death saving throws. According to PHB, you roll at the START of your turn, so if you roll that sweet natural 20, you can still take your turn! Spend your action to chug that emergency healing potion in your pocket, and see if you can move away.

    • @visy23thevlogelf83
      @visy23thevlogelf83 Před 5 lety +27

      Additional note: you’ll most likely have just half your speed, as you have to get up from a more then likely state of prone, so let’s hope you didn’t skip leg day!

      Exactly, except you start prone.

    • @casuallychallenged
      @casuallychallenged Před 5 lety +35

      they did say that you roll at the start of your turn, but I understand the desire for that extra clarification. Often times people are so excited they rolled a nat 20 on a death save, they just forget to take an action... and from a roleplay perspective, it might make sense to have come out of unconsciousness and not realise you CAN do something still in the next few seconds...

      @casuallychallenged Před 5 lety +41

      Jorden Taylor common misconception. the above mentioned Animate Dead is the one that makes an undead creature. Raise Dead is a 2nd "bring a character back from the dead" spell in the game after Revivify. Also, only Clerics (and maybe Paladins?) can cast it.

    • @LycanFayn
      @LycanFayn Před 5 lety +35

      Even better, Raise Dead is available to bards, clerics and paladins whilst Reincarnate is *only* available for druids. It really seems like Raise Dead is the more common 5th level un-deathing, so I was also very confused

    • @viktorstagnetti7491
      @viktorstagnetti7491 Před 5 lety +2

      It's not that confusing. I don't even play D&D and I know that melee attacks are critical hits and you autofail 2 death saves. Ranged attacks are only 1 failed death save.

      Domaik If that’s the case, isn’t that something better handled by the DM at the table?
      The whole point of this series was to give some basic tips so you can begin playing without feeling overwhelmed.
      The more complicated stuff and further questions of “Wait, what happens now?” will come organically as you play. :)

    • @ZTGallagher
      @ZTGallagher Před 5 lety +2

    • @viktorstagnetti7491
      @viktorstagnetti7491 Před 5 lety +9

      Zachary Gallagher The point of this video series is to be viewed in conjunction with the Player's Handbook. As Marisha explained on Twitter. It's not a comprehensive guide for newbies or a replacement for the actual source material. It's quite literally a 'Handbooker Helper'.
      Besides the chances are pretty slim that people who don't watch CR or play D&D will watch these. And anyone who does watch CR should have picked up on quite a bit of the rules and procedures by now.

  • @ryangress5697
    @ryangress5697 Před 5 lety +36

    I wish you covered how death saves work when enemies attack you while unconscious, aka the only confusing part about death saves

    • @Wildtrexkid
      @Wildtrexkid Před 5 lety +9

      if you are unconscious you have that 'Condition' which means you
      - cannot move or speak
      - become 'Incapacitated' so you cannot take any actions or reactions
      - drop prone and anything you have held (actually protects you somewhat from ranged attacks as they are at disadvantage at any range further then 5 ft so only a normal roll)
      - attacks against you are at advantage (cancels out if ranged)
      - auto crit if ANY attack hits from an attacker within 5 ft of you (so a successful arrow shot will still auto crit if they manage to hit from next to you)
      critical hits count as 2 failed saves, regular hits count as 1 failed save so if say an enemy orc knocks you out with an axe, rendered you unconscious and you failed the save on your turn you would have only 2 death saves remaining, if he attacks you and succeeds the swing, it will auto crit and you will lose 2 more saves and die.
      best way i can quickly thinnk of to simplify it is it after seeing if you have suffered instant death based on hp numbers, they don't matter any more. you are now using a secondary 'health bar' of saves and fails. all damage totals don't matter and are instead reduced to what type of damage it was, whether it was a hit, or a critical hit.

    • @ryangress5697
      @ryangress5697 Před 5 lety +2

      Wildtrexkid yeah I know how it all works. I’m more concerned about the new players/DMs that are watching this video for information!

  • @neotagatg3238
    @neotagatg3238 Před 5 lety +8

    Feels like instead of explaining the spells to come back. A section on what happens when your down and take damage was needed , how if you don't die outright you go to 0 with most effects ending, and a section on any magic heals not only auto gets you up but you get the full effects of the magical healing. Coming into 5e for the 1st time a lot of people get those three confused as it's very different from 3.5.

    Fairly big miss on "Raise Dead" by far the most traditional and often cast of all the bring you back to life spells. :) Odd you would have reincarnate which I would have included as an extra as it does not bring you back to life but puts your soul in a different body.

  • @JMesonT
    @JMesonT Před 5 lety +3

    Raise dead is also 5th level and works the same as Reincarnate exept it has the tradeoff of costing 500gp less in exchange for needing the original body.
    To recap:
    Reincarnate: costs diamonds worth 1000gp, can only bring back those killed within 10 days, you only need a part of a body and the spell creates a new body.
    Raise Dead: costs diamonds worth 500gp, still can only bring back those killed within the past 10 days, but you need the original body (with vital organs attached! You can't bring someone back who is missing a head lol!)
    Both can be used as 5th level spells, but the situations surrounding the PC's death (and your party's current funds) might play into which spell you ultimately use

    • @thinkEdem
      @thinkEdem Před 5 lety

      Also Raise Dead won't turn you into a different race (probably hurting your abilities and traits, and rendering any racial feats you took unavailable)... but sometimes beggars can't be choosers :P

    • @kachiechan
      @kachiechan Před 5 lety

      @@shadycactus6146 Caduceus did not turn him into mush. He used a spell called Gentle Repose which only purpose is to extend the shelf life of Raise Dead, which he will get at Level 9. With that action, Taliesin was telling the audience he fully intends to resurrect Mollymauk as soon as Clay is 9th level. It's the precise reason he made a grave cleric.

    one of my main questions is how does the dynamics of swapping weapons during combat work?
    from a bow to a sword --- or sword to bow etc

    • @aetherblackbolt1301
      @aetherblackbolt1301 Před 5 lety

      Debbie Buckland don't know if you're still wondering, but it's fairly simple albeit cumbersome to do so.
      Each turn you can do one free interaction without using action/movement/bonus action etc. An example of an "interaction" is drawing or sheathing a weapon, but both both. If you want to do a second interaction, you must use your action to do the Use an Object action. So if you wanted to swap weapons, it would take your interaction and action.
      This is fairly annoying, so it's better to predict a swap early; at the end of one turn, sheathe your weapon as an interaction. On your next turn, use your interaction to draw the new weapon. This way you still have your action to attack with the new weapon. It's just not quite as dynamic without the scene telling your character they'll need to change weapons soon.
      However, you can circumvent this somewhat by dropping your current weapon; dropping a weapon doesn't cost anything, not even an interaction, so you can still use your interaction to draw your new weapon. At the end of your next turn, you'll want to use your interaction to pickup your new weapon, and then the turn after sheathe it. In this way you still have your full actions to do stuff, but it takes longer to perform the whole interaction.

The druid went down first and had 1 success one failed death saving throw, and then I failed a throw. Our rouge then went into the thick of it and was dropped to 2 hit points, after being on full health the whole fight (he is very squishy). What kind of game are you playing? The 4 hobgolins alone vs 3 lvl 2 players is a deadly encounter according to kobold fight club. 15 goblins and a wizard aswell? How the hell did your DM play that out without you realising he was holding your hand the entire way?
      "You see 15 goblins coming at you but they are all tied together with a huge rubberband making it impossible for 14 goblins to attack. In the middle of the pile you notice a wizard hat and you see that the wizard is actually driving the goblins. The wizard is packed so tightly that he can't use his arms to cast spells. Oh yeah and on the ground is four hobgoblins that looks dead but they each have a sword on their bodies so they count aswell"

    This was pretty short so it would make sense for it to be a bit more comprehensive. The rules for taking damage whilst unconscious (and what constitutes 1 or 2 deaths saves in those situations) would've been an easy addition. That said, still great content and covers the basics pretty well.
    I do think if I showed someone this who didn't know the game that well they would still ask "what happens to that extra damage below 0 though". Yes that was explained in the thing but for someone who doesn't know how any of it works, it could still come up as a point of confusion.
    Incidentally that information could've easily been rolled into an explanation on taking damage after you go unconscious, now that I think about it. Ahh well.

    "Massive damage can kill you instantly. When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum." They neglected to say maximum. If my level 12 ranger has 18 hp, takes a hit for 36 damage, but has 80 maximum damage, they don't die instantly.

      @redfinale Před 5 lety

      Had read that same part of the PHB myself and thought back to this episode and thought "wait, that doesn't sound right". To be fair, the instance with Kiki and the cliff is an obvious "she's dead" cause she took triple her max health in one hit

      @judethomas4214 Před rokem

      And -- a small quibble -- at 0:35 she says, "if there is remaining damage that EXCEEDS your total amount of hit points..." She should have said "that MEETS OR EXCEEDS..."

    At 0:44 when you're describing instant death, why would the ranger die at 36 damage and 18 HP, but not 30 damage and 18 HP? Doesn't the damage still exceed their HP?

    You may want to re-release this with a clarification. You do NOT die instantly if you take damage equal to twice your current HP like was suggested in this video, you die if the damage exceeding 0 is equal to or higher than your MAX HP. The example in the PHB is a cleric with 12 max hp and currently at half health dies instantly at 18 damage but is unconscious at 17 damage.

    • @jones81381
      @jones81381 Před 5 lety +10

      The example given in the video was clear. If you're at max hp and take double your max, you're instantly dead. She explained that if the leftover damage is equal to or greater than your max, you die, then used an example where you had max and got hit for double your max.

    • @Sylvirayne

      It took me a while to understand this rule until my friend explaned it to me as follows: You die instantly if the damage takes you to your Negative MAX HP or lower.

    • @yuugur666
      @yuugur666 Před 5 lety +8

      jones81381 it was not. Nowhere did she say max hp. She said total hp which could be construed as current total. The example is clear to us, as seasoned players, but remember that this series is primarily for new players or people who don't play but watch CR and want to have some idea of what's going on, so it's best to be as clear as possible.

    • @yuugur666
      @yuugur666 Před 5 lety +5

      Even with the wording they used though, having the example character already have health missing would make the example a million times more clear.
