- I hated beets. At least I used to. Now I think they can't be bested. I mean, bettered. One-upped? They can't be... something. I'll think of it. Here's the technique: www.seriouseats.com/2017/02/r...

i love cooking dad channel
I can feel Kenji’s smirk as he’s making those beet jokes 😂
“Beets cannot be bested... bettered.... there’s a word for it”
Alton Kenji Brown ladies and gentlemen
He was really beeting around the bush with this one
My two food daddies 😘
"can feel it on my fingertips", this guys good
I still didn't get the joke until I read the comments! Anyway thank you for your service
"There's a word for it." Oh you.
The word is on the tip of his fingers!
Kenji: "let them fall where they may"
Also Kenji: *gently places orange where he wants*
It’s just like my lemon coach used to say: “There’s no rush to seat citrus.”
Wait, what’s a lemon coach?
It's wonderful to see inside an artist's mind sometimes. Watching Kenji's videos to me are similar to watching Bob Ross.
kenji makes the most amazing looking food and he also makes the worst dad jokes imaginable
I imagine Kenji moonwalking in his kitchen and singing Michael Jackson: "just beet it, just _beEt_ it!" 🤣🤣
Was watching this video with my fiancé. Kenji says “I can hear the water police now but I’ll be quick” my fiancé says “uh, that’s called the coast guard” then proceeded to laugh uncontrollably for the next 5 minutes.
Kenji: "anything that goes well with citrus goes well with beets"
Me: puts beets in my Cuba libre
We call that a Cuba-Soviet partnership
"I sneezed on the beet and the beet got sicker." Kenji-yonce, 2020
Corona: _too soon man, too soon_
🤣🤣
dam that edit at the end got me laughing so hard it hurts
Kenji is getting cheeky on the DL. By next week he'll be adding sound effects and laser beams Brad Leone style
D.J. Kenji López-Alt
Kenji droppin the beet fr 🍠
A common way to cook Beets in South india, is to cut it into small cubes/grated , boil/microwave/roast it until soft then saute with either spices or coconut. It'll go crispy chewy and incredibly sweet.
Well made beets are one of lifes greatest pleasures
Ooooh. Thanks for sharing, man! Definitely putting this in my ideas bank.
@@deadfr0g the usual spices are a little turmeric and a chilli powder. The combo of hot and sweet is ridiculous.
Use whatever you have though, sauted beets are delicious any way
Hahah, that’s awesome, I was already thinking about turmeric! That one makes so much sense to me because it’s already a little bit earthy and I also think it plays really well with mild sweetness... which is exactly what you get out of good beets.
Also it’s kind of funny to me because turmeric is one of the only ingredients that can stain things as much as beets do. I should pick a wooden spoon and turn it orange.
@@deadfr0g lol! Maybe someone needs to make a recipe with all these hyper stainy stuff. Beets, turmeric, durian(for the smell)
That sounds absolutely beet-utiful.
Oh he started to lurk into meme town here
this isn't one of my favorite kenji recipes, but it's absolutely one of my favorite kenji videos. The beet puns, the fruit lesson, the whisking-in-towel-pot hack, the additional puns...we've gone full kenji on this one
"What is that word, I can feel it at my fingertips..." as he's holding the damn beet.
Well played, sir.
Fact: Bears eat beets.
Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

Millions of families suffer every year!
My evening doesn’t start until the Kenji show is on!
I’m addicted too
I binge watch over and over. I only tried the dessert using ritz crackers because it was from him. Now it’s a major favorite.
Shabu at the end: DROP THE BEET
Here is another good use for beets. If you like horseradish as a condiment, look up Polish recipe for Horseradish with Beets (Ćwikła z Chrzanem)
“Beets that don’t suck” - Borsch, basically
Anybody else inhale when he brought the warm beets up to the camera
My Google search history:
lavne
lagne
lahne
lione
labne
ffs
That's great
Your last guess was correct Labne Kefir cheese!
I first discovered labneh when I was in Northern Israel. There was a period of like 2 years where I literally thought it was called "Druze Cheese", since that's what they called it on menus, and I was in an area with a large population of Druze people. I was upset when I could never find it in the US lol
Saaaaame.
Also many thanks to @ChangeHumanity ^-^
Labneh is the absolute best. I make it all the time and eat it drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with salt and sumac. So damn good.
"It just can't be..." *MUSIC PLAYS*
Kenji, you smooth son of a...
I love that you have been teaching your daughter the eccentric name for common food items. Hopefully once she makes it through middle school she'll learn to appreciate it later in life.
Beets in my country are rounder. They look almost like the pictures of turnips I've seen, but beet colored.
We cook them by cutting them into a small dice, around 3 mm, and stir frying with salt, chilly powder, and sputtered mustard seeds and curry leaves!
:P
@@BenNeedsATheme4aDream oh yes, or tomatoes sometimes
I live in the Southeast US and the beets available at my grocery stores are more like what you are describing. They're rounder and thicker, they require a bit longer cooking time, I usually do 90 minutes at 375
I think most beets available in the US are larger and rounder, as you're describing. Kenji said these were baby beets from the farmers' market, which are small, seasonal markets where farmers set up stalls and sell their produce directly to consumers. This usually results in fresher produce and more seasonal variety than we get from our large supermarkets/grocers.
I've never had stir fried beets, but that preparation sounds delicious and I'll have to try it next time I buy beets!
These videos are every bit as educational and entertaining as the big budget highly edited ones... good teaching!!
It's amazing how many good pairings there are for beets! One of my favourites is beets with anise/fennel/licorice flavours. Also roasting beets until they go black and then letting them soften back up in olive oil ... they get this amazing mellow flavour of dark caramel! Also beets with smoky flavours. Also beets with pine oil and pine shoots. Also ... etc
i live for the end of every video when he feeds his dogs.
Kenji I've just been binge-watching your vids and they are just great, thanks for the content!
Had to pause at 0:55 seconds to pay respects to the punning. Glorious.
And again at 11:15 for the pun series that led to "one-upped".
And a good beat at 15:20... Beat it 16:45. Beats on 17:22. And just sheer wonderful shamelessness at 20:00.

funniest cooking video on the internet. Thank you Kenji for putting a smile on my face!
"defeated in melee combat" was what i thought you were looking for
Thank you so much for sharing your cooking process and recipes, Kenji! I'm a huge fan, and loved my time at Wursthall when I had a chance to visit a couple years ago! Just made this beet recipe this afternoon, and am blown away by how amazing it tastes...thank you for also approaching cooking with such a scientific mind (and guiding me through Thanksgiving 2019 with The Food Lab book), and making the process less intimidating and fun for a complete beginner like myself. Wishing you continued success and wellness, and looking forward to more publications (in literature, video, and any other format) in the future!
Good to see someone cook with beets. My family raised beets in our garden, so I think they are great. Good for you to show beet recipes
"Beats can't be... Bested. Ah can't think of the word for it." Lmao I laughed out loud so early in this video
“Honey is sweet but doesn’t compete with the sweetness of the beet”
Having had an inexplicable perversion for beets for as long as I can remember, my quest for beets that *do suck* continues.
Why is the “ cant be bettered “ joke so amusing🤣🤣
Samin Nosrat uses a similar technique for a beet, avocado, and citrus salad in her Salt Fat Acid Heat cookbook. And it is also awesome.
Hated beets when I was younger, now I am a huge fan. Thanks for featuring them.
I feel like most people who think they hate beets probably have only had them from a jar or canned. Fresh oven roasted beets are so much better than canned. "Dirt candy" is the perfect description of them
Making my morning everyday Mr. Kenji
ive been making so many beet salads lately!! i use jarred beets from trader joes but they're still delicious. i use spring mix, beets, strawberries, blueberries, roasted pine nuts, and goat cheese with a shallot salad dressing. sooo good
11:00 At first I was shouting "BEET-EN" at the screen like watching Dora the explorer...
i wish i was exaggerating but this beet recipe changed my life!!! soooooo so good.... i am now a beet lover i see why you were so hype kenji
:o the editing! you've really upped your game in quarantine man :)
Dwight Schrute approves of this video
epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This salad's gonna be a big hit. It's got a good beet and you can dance to it
We also out grated beets in our mac'n'cheese sometimes to further the lie that we're eating a healthy meal lol.
@@xXJokerAtWorkXx finally, someone who's willing to try it!
I'll warn you, it comes out looking like Gelusil.
Recipe?
@@NeiradTheGoat we just throw grated steamed beets in at the end after the cheese, it's not complicated
@@xXJokerAtWorkXx get back to me with their reaction!
I chose the right thing to watch tonight. In a bad mood and your dad jokes cracked me up! Thanks (for the cooking tips, too)
My go to for beets is to cube them up, combine with oil and a generous amount of salt and roast at 400 for 15 to 20 minutes, stir them up and back in the oven until nicely browned. Delicious!
The word you're looking for Kenji is outdone. Beets cannot be outdone.
The dad jokes are amazing, had me laughing out loud.
Beets are my favourite too! Definitely gonna make this for my work lunches!
Fantastic jokes. Simply cannot be surpassed.
These dad jokes made my day. We need more videos because I've been going through them like ...like... Ah forget it. I'll leave the jokes to Kenji.
I worked at a restaurant with a really good Beet salad with arugula, goat cheese, blood orange supreme, a fennel pistachio brittle and a simple oil/red wine vin dressing
The pan, towel, whisk trick was pretty boss. Way better than my approach of putting it in a small dish with a lid and shaking it
Mastering the snap edit. I like
Kenji's whisking skills are underrated
I'll bet pomegranate molasses would be a great substitute for the honey.
...or strawberry nerds. Whatever floats your boat.
Uh i have sone of that at home! :D i‘ll try it tonight :)
You're recipes can't be.... What is the word I'm looking for??? Topped? Nope. Bettered? Not that.... Ah, i know - Beeten :))
A great find. So simple even hubby managed to do it!!
0:43 I chuckled. Love you Kenji
Terrific video! I really enjoyed it 👌
great video Kenji
That better/best bit was probably my favourite joke you’ve ever made
"i can feel it at the tip of my fingers" is your best dad joke yet lol
I really love Beet salat. Just raw and grated. With a simple Vinagrette, litlle bit Garlic and Onion.😋
Up here in Alaska, I like grilled beets. Usually on the same grill as salmon. Brush with olive oil, kosher salt and grill 1/8 inch beet slices.
Kenji I love you man I'm so glad you didn't do the dad joke lol
Love your style.
You crack me up...taunting your viewers about your star ingredient...nothing "beets" it.
Fun and funny.
Thanks.
I used to eat the pith on thick skinned oranges. It’s slightly sweet and no bitterness unless you get close to the orange part. Made the orange last longer.
I think steaming is actually the best way to cook beets. Just in a regular steamer. They're fantastic.
Also if you get your beets with the greens still on them you can rub them down with olive oil and a little salt and pepper and roast them in the oven similar to making kale chips
Just awesome
I had an Australian cook in a mining camp and he made beats a whole hell of a lot. 2nd or 3rd time ever for me. Love them now
Soooooo many dad jokes. Thanks chef, I needed a chuckle. Also I totally agree with the 'dirt candy' description, tho it is not great for marketing.
Kenji with the "can't be beat" dad jokes! 🤣💙
roasted beets are delicious! only caveat- it's going to make your 💩 a red colour. don't be scared the day after 😅
Hahaha that edit at the end is gold!
Kenji makes beets beetter. LOL 🤣
Beets salad is the only salad I order at a restaurant. Love it with goat cheese, toasted walnut pieces and arugula.

I love beetroot, it's my favourite vegetable. Just roasted in the oven with olive oil is delicious.
I like the “spoon and finger” approach too
"The most apPEELing thing about beets..." very nicely done
My mum makes roasted beets in a very similar way. Often served with rosemary, feta and olive oil or in a salad.
My son also watches that show. Never liked beets before, so I might try this.
LoL... so excited for beets. ILOVE IT!!!!!
Thanks James
That pouch method also works really well with fish. I use whole trouts, just put some rosemary and garlic in there, along with olive oil, salt and pepper. Turns out great.
A slice of bacon too.
I love this
Beets are the best specially in a salad with some onions and letuce (a nice vinagreta helps too), change my mind
Beats cannot be beaten.
