  • Swollen batteries are a very common issue; in case of macbooks, it will also affect trackpad functionality, and can lead to permanent chassis damage. Before getting a new one, you can get a bit more life out of it if you want, for free.
First make sure to discharge it fully before opening up the laptop.
Disconnect it from the logic board, go outside to avoid inhaling the gas. Puncture with a plastic object - metal could cause a spark and start a fire. Press on the cells to let all the gas out and then use some good tape to seal the holes.
I have done this hundred of times and did not have any report of issues.
The battery capacity will take a slight hit, but i have people running like this for a year and still holding some capacity.
Purchasing a new battery for old mac is a very hard task as scams are easy to come by, refurbished and low quality items are everywhere and will never last like the original one, and swapping it is a very long procedure.
These are even more reason to try getting the best out the one you have installed.

Please don't do this. This is totally insane. The fumes are toxic and there is a significant chance it could ignite.

its not insane, just dont use something metal. it releases the gas. good if you dont have $$ for a new battery

@@mircomputers1221 you need to close the holes with glue or duct tape, now air moisture will enter the battery and as soon as a water drop of water will form between the now exposed layers, the layers will react and catch fire.
You pretty much made hundreds of time bombs.

This is not a fix. This is a dangerous breach of the protective foil! This can result in fire. When cutting the foil you expose the batteries internal metals (in this case lithium) to outside air including moisture. This will result in more gases being 'emittet' and slowly completely break the battery. In case of over-temperature and high charge this may lead to a thermal runaway setting the battery on fire.

Just to confirm for others it wont make the battery hold a better charge. It will remove the gas (DO IT OUTSIDE) and let you keep using the laptop for a while until you can get a new battery (we don't all live in a country where a battery can be delivered quickly!). You should also tape up the hole you made once all the gas is gone. Try not to poke it straight down, do it horizontally.

yes, some batteries can even last another year after this, it depends, but it's still better than buy something if you don't need it just to prevent trackpad from cracking
