How I fixed my McCulloch Trimmer Starting and Running Problems

  • Cleaning my carburettor twice didn't help. I still had starting problems and it just didn't stay running. Very frustrating as it is a relatively new machine.
    Apologies for the terrible audio, I think my video cam is packing up.

    Hello Dave, thanks for uploading these videos, always nice to see how to fix something instead of throwing it away.... might come handy, since all my little machines are quite old...

      you're very welcome!! I really don't like throwing machines away, most can be repaired and its very satisfying if you can do it yourself. Thanks for watching))

    So glad i came across this video! 1st strimmer ive owned and have avoided using for an embarrassingly long time thinking i was just too stupid to start it 😂 this was the problem!! Got it started fine once replacing that tube. Thankyou!

      Hi Brogan, really happy that my video helped. I must admit, I did the same as you because it was so difficult to start and wouldn't stay running, so I put it aside for nearly a year!! Finally I found the problem

    Hi Dave. Thanks .Brilliant video. I’m having the same issues although mine starts but I can’t get enough power. I think carb needs adjusted but I am trying to find exactly where the carb is on the Mc Culloch strimmer. Mine is just over a year old and now out of warranty but I think its in good condition and unlikely to be this ar hose although I will check.

      Yes, me too, I only bought this one as it was a great price. And now the coil has also given up so just waiting on the new one to arrive. I might add that my McCulloch lawn mower and lawn tractor don't have any issues

    Have a feeling that mine may have the same problem with the tube for the air. I took the carburetor off last night only to discover I have lost my WD40 to clean it, I'm convinced it's the tube, but giving the carburetor a good clean won't do it any harm.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před měsícem +1

      I also took the carb off to clean, so many times! Also replaced the coil. If you have the original "Torch" spark plug, better change it, its junk. The big breakthrough was that little tube, mine was perished although the trimmer was only 6 months old. I think WD40 might leave a residue behind which could clog the carb, a proper carb cleaner is the way to go. Good luck to you, hope you get it running soon and thanks for your comment and for watching

    I should have said. how would I adjust the carb exactly. Have looked all over you tube but just can seem to find it. PS I never primed 10 times ether or keep finger on the trigger but I guess its n the guidelines for a reason. I managed to strim 10 mins the other night before it kept cutting out when I pressed the trigger and just would not get up to full power to strim after that.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před rokem

      there's something on the side of the carb which I believe might be the adjustment screw. It has a plastic plug in it because the factory don;t want you to adjust the factory setting. Your problem is more than likely a blockage in the high speed jets inside the carb. Also check your metering lever, mine was too low so I bent it upwards a little to allow more fuel in. Might do a video of the carb quite soon so I'll let you know. You should double check that little hose as well, it might be sucking in too much air if its leaking and that will cause bog down.

      @@davekennedy52 Great advice. I found another video so I have ordered the carb 21 teeth tool to try that first but plenty of options now to check out. Ill try this first and if no joy try the hose and the metering lever…. Which I’m not actually sure what that is but first thins first.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před rokem +1

      @@leomccann1762 I tried my 21 splined tool today and it fits perfectly. I thought it had a plastic cap to prevent adjusting but it didn't. Before you start adjusting or removing the screw, turn it in completely counting the half turns that you make, until it stops. That way you can get back to your original setting. By the way I started making a video on the carb today, should be ready before the weekend so you can see how I clean it and adjust the metering lever

    Looks like the normal issue with these ... needs the clutch replacing/repairing. The blade shouldn't be going round on tickover like it is in the video it should only cut in when you rev it up ... with the clutch permanently engaged you need excessive revs to keep the engine turning or it stalls. Had the same issue on mine within 6 months of purchase ... seems to be an issue with them.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před měsícem

      My problems also started about 6 months in. I hadn't even used up the free trimmer line that comes with the trimmer! Spent so much time on this trimmer and I've been using my other 2 trimmers instead. I finally changed the spark plug (Torch) and that has made a big difference

    • @rsmith5196
      @rsmith5196 Před měsícem

      @davekennedy52 definitely check the clutch as it is clearly an issue ... the blade should not go round on tickover like in the video. Very easy to do .... take the filter cover off then undo all the lower case screws and the top cover screws except the ones fixing the top cover to the motor. You will then be able to separate the motor and the shaft without undoing any other parts. The clutch is just 2 bolts .... its a 10 minute job so long as nothing has jammed. Mine was just a broken spring but I changed the complete clutch for about £50. All the starting and running/stalling issues disappeared with the clutch repair.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před měsícem

      @@rsmith5196 Thanks for the suggestion, So many screws holding the cover in place- I think about 10 at the back alone. Hopefully the clutch just needs a clean and maybe I can slacked off the idle speed a bit.
      Its running a lot smoother now after I replaced the little rubber 90 degree tube on top of the carb. It was letting in false air and upsetting the fuel/air mixture

    • @rsmith5196
      @rsmith5196 Před měsícem

      It'll most likely be a spring as it's the spring that disengages the clutch as low revs ... you rev up and the centrifugal force pushes out drum brake like pads ... very simple to take apart but leave the top cover connected to the motor and don't disengage the cables as its easy to do without. What you show in your video is way more complicated than the clutch.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před měsícem

      @@rsmith5196 Thanks, but definitely not the clutch spring, I checked. Spark plug was black so reduced the fuel mixture and lowered the revs and its perfect now, thanks for all your info

    The starting assembly on these is just so awful- nylon etc and not robust- I suppose they could have used wax, instead. Destined for the skip now as they are not built properly- unlike the previous generation of strimmers. Frustrating and "good money after bad" syndrome.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  Před rokem

      I agree completely, Nick, I'm so disappointed. I still haven't used up the couple of meters of nylon cutting cord that came with the machine and I've had continuous starting and running problems- carb problem and now I've just put on a new coil. Video to follow in a day or so

    • @NickRatnieks
      @NickRatnieks Před rokem

      @@davekennedy52 I phoned garden machinery repair specialists and they didn't want to know about this model. I bought the offending part myself- the "flippers in the starting assembly and I do know a garden repair company's owner and one of his men fitted this part which was a major struggle but told me the nylon disc that locks into those flippers was shot. My friend told me I was a fool to persevere with the strimmer but I had bought the cutter attachment which I need for just one job - the top edge of a high hedge. I bought that nylon disc recently fitted it myself and within a few minutes of use, that nylon disc had been ground down and once again I could not start the machine. All in all a very frustrating experience yet I had owned a McCulloch for nearly 20 years but now under new ownership, this machine is really not worth persevering with as it is sub-standard. It's no wonder places are reluctant to repair them as the chances are the repair will not last and they will get moaned at by the customer!
