Two things got me hyped for this movie.
1. "Based on a true story"
2. Badass Matthew Mcconoughey
You don't know who White Boy Rick is? It's a messed up story
yeah look up his story it's infuriating
If you don't know who he is or anything about his case you should definitely look it up
Don't forget we getting custard
3. Donna Summer
You know what’s funny about this movie? They didn’t need to build a set of Detroit. They could film real life Detroit and it looks the same!
LMAO
It was taken in ohio
Richard Fore It takes place in the 80s.
just record a dumpster and nobody would know the difference.
@@lorireece1930 Yeah, Detroit still looks like the 80s
The gold chains and expensive fur coats never go out of style.

1:42-2:02 Those lines are just to real. A son trying to help his father. Favorite part of this magnificent trailer
By selling drugs?? Let him had been Black saying that.
@@elreydeoro8925 the way of helping his father isn't ideal but it's about how every child would do anything to help those who raised them and brought them into the world. and yes if it were a black man it would be a completely different story but at the same time as a black women I know of many men who do sketchy things in order to help family. is it the right way? no it's not but it's the only way they know.
Lmao Americans are whacked in the head
Facts, been there
That was rather a grand trailer. Great choice of song and a visual appetiser. I'm foaming at the mouth!
Amanda Adlem aite hammy chill tf out
I disagree. It says '84 and that song was '77. Immediately makes the trailer feel like the 70's and not the 80's.
what is the song?
Song plz?
A remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love"
As someone who lives by Detroit, this makes me very excited.
I saw this trailer on a commercial for the first time a week ago, and as soon as I saw the kid I knew exactly what this was. I hadn't known they were making a film about the story. Hopefully one day we'll get a movie based in Detroit not about drugs or murder.
Bro I went to to Detroit michigan couple weeks ago Maan how beautiful is Michigan
I’m from there. My old man knew him, hanging out on Woodward. Definitely had a crazy life, some of the stories he tells me
They Did him Dirty and he was only 14.
17 apparently when he was convicted, but throughout the movie he is 14, 15, and when hes arrested hes apparently 17. The pacing was poor, bottom line; don't sell drugs. Maybe shouldn't have gotten life, but should've still gotten prison time for all the peoples lives he ruined.
workisfun he ain’t ruined nobody’s life lmao the fact that you blame the dealers instead of the feins is so stupid 😂 the dealers don’t force the feins to snort or inject stuff into them if you didn’t know
@@workisfun856 i don't know how accurate the movie was to real life but from the movie it looks like the cops did him dirty. They gave that boy a little taste of easy money, and he fell for it, yes the boy chose willingly to come back while he was out but the cops knew he will, it was just a matter of time. He was was the innocent bait of the cops to catch all the other guys. Goes to show not all bad people go to prisons , and not all the cops/judicial system are the good.
@@Modestasgailius yeah, the world aint made up of good people and bad people, there's only people. Know what i mean

Excellent film. Highly underrated.
sb what? Rick himself even said this movie brought light to his situation and helped him more than hurt him
sb I’ve read books and articles about the history of this you just sound like a paranoid schizophrenic where the whole world is out for you. You probably think the earth is flat too
I think the reason why this movie didn’t get that much publicity is because this establishment don’t want poor whites to think they can get along with poor blacks, because if we do then these wealthy fuckers will be up shits creek..

@Big Nook. It used to be...
I grew up in Detroit. 80s baby. Im not white, but random school kids used to call me White Boy Rick... but I never who he was or about him. Cant wait to eventually see this movie!
If you're in your mid 20s to 30s with successful parent's than they did it right throughout the 80s. That decade was all about building your empire no matter what skin color you were. It was about 10 yrs later after MLK and the Vietnam war. The American dream was still a thing, all you had to do was go to school. Which in returned made the kids who were 80s babies and early 90s baby's have the best life as long as they did the "Right thing". Either that or you sold drugs, no on between. Detroit was on it's last leg. All the people who didn't go to college or learn a trade got ducked over. Waves of people from the West Indies moved either to Florida or NYC. 80s was all about what you want.
I kind of doubt that.
Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt , were so good , great performances I find it sad that this was a true story , and the thought of a kid facing that sentence , way back then .... excellent movie
“We’re going for Custard!”
Best movie line ever
Holy crap, it's the same director who directed '71! This will be his second directorial film, very exciting!
Thanks for the comment, just went and watched the trailer for '71 and now am definitely gonna check it out. So many movies I miss every year, but now, not this one thanks to you!
Harmonys directing the movie and also wrote it, 71 was directed by another director
Both '71 and White Boy Rick are directed by Yann Demange.

Excellent and so heart breaking.
The best role I’ve seen MM play yet!
Well then you haven’t seen him in True Detective or Dallas !!
I am almost the exact same age as Richard Wershe. I grew up just outside of Detroit. I remember reading the newspaper articles about him. My mother would always let me know when there was an article about him in the paper and I was always fascinated at the stories. At the time, the way the paper made him out, I thought he was a drug kingpin. They would show him wearing fur coats and gold rope chains, keep in mind crack and cocaine stories were big and Pablo Escbar was in the news all the time too. My grandmother was over the day there was the article in the paper about him getting a life sentence, I think he was 18 or 19 when he was sentenced. My grandmother was a saint, she literally was the nicest person on this earth, she never a negative word about anyone in her life, she walked to church every week until I took her to the hospital and she died after surgery at 93 years old, I was the only one with her in the hospital when she died (it was probably the saddest day of my life) because I lived alone and my family all lived in another state. Anyway, that day she was over I told her this 19 year old kid was going to jail for life for being a drug dealer and she sat down next to me grabbed my hand and squeezed it and put her head down and started crying. She was so upset because she couldn't believe they would put someone that young in jail for life. She cried for a long while, I still remember it and that was 1987 I think. After watching the documentary about him I realized it was absolute corruption that kept him in jail all those years, Detroit was and I'm sure still is one of the most corrupt cities in the country. I'm glad he got paroled finally but I wish Donald Trump would get him out for the few years he still has in Florida. I'm not saying he was a saint but he was kept in jail 3 or 4 times longer than murderers that he was associated with for a drug charge because of Coleman Young and other powerful people that never wanted him out for various reasons.
For anyone wondering:

The problem I have with this movie is that it portray him as being blackmailed to be an informant when really they were getting paid to be informants. They weren't holding nothing over his dad head, his dad just used his son for informant money.

hell yeah.. movie had me so upset
No, this isn't exactly correct. You need to see the documentary. It was the corrupt and criminal mayor and police dept that did him dirty. The FBI has been fighting to for Rick's parole.
@none of your damn businessYou need to see the documentary, its was the mayor and PD that did Rick dirty

Saw the movie today, white boy Rick is GREAT! Would see it again
before the sentiment about this film reaches a certain zenith, I'm compelled to point out that the coke/dope trade DEVASTATED Detroit in the 1980s, on top of the industrial divestment and the political isolation and systemic racism. Rick Wershe's drug operation was abetted by federal agents who at first wanted to go after "bigger" drug gangs, but eventually, the payoffs to public officials started to become more apparent, and Rick became a "liability"-- he knew too much.
Hypestyle donty forget to point out that it was Democrat lawmakers begging for harsher penalties for crack. Or thast the biggest swing in crack arrests and sentencing was brought about by Bill Clinton.
Yeah as much as I love these stories and will always love gangster stories at heart...nothing is to be glorified about any nigga during the crack era. The repercussions of it are being felt today.
thalrg22 Agreed. The good thing is it's directed by Yann Demange so I'm hoping the trailer is just being used to put butts on seats. '71 dealt with the Troubles in arguably the best way any director has before (maybe with the exception of In the Name of the Father), brutally realistic and honest.
such an underrated movie, just sucks how the trailer shows a bit from every scene, it kinda gives away too much.
I mean we already know what happens in the end since it based on a true story

@@nickspaaz i mean it gives away too much of the actual content of the film, like most of the the best moments and scenes and lines are in the trailer or at least parts of them are. Not in terms of the main storyline

Htown Lifer Who said anything about a jet getting him time? You said Rick was the white freeway which is furthest from the truth. He was a white boy in a black neighborhood that’s it. Art Derrick was the white dude with all the weight back then. He had so much money when he got locked up the feds sold his house. He came home and went to his house and the new owner let him take his money out the walls and he brought his house back.
“This Ricky, he white.” 😂💀

If they want to be true to the time period and Detroit they'll play some of the early techno from that era, like Model 500.
True. But, don't forget that the Detroit techno from the 80's was def. not mainstream.
And I doubt if any brothers was really into techno those days.
