- ►The modern BMW engine is getting more and more electronically controlled. This includes the water pump found in this BMW F15 X5 engine. Because it is not a belt-driven water pump, the usual failure point is inside of the pump itself. This job is relatively simple, with just a few tools and a little know-how. This job should be done if you see any leaks coming from the water pump or thermostat housing and if you are seeing fault codes 2E81, 2E82, 2E85.
Thermostats are a simple device that regulates coolant flow through the engine. When cold, it will stay closed, stopping coolant flow and helping the engine warm-up faster. Once up to temperature, it will open and allow normal coolant flow and maintain proper engine temperature. Thermostats can fail in two ways: stuck open or stuck closed. If you notice your engine operating temperatures are higher than normal, it could be a sign that your thermostat is on its way out. Thankfully the thermostat on the BMW F15 X5 is in a convenient location for you to access and replace.
Gareth Foley, our BMW Catalog Manager, is back in another video to walk you through the steps of replacing the water pump & thermostat on this BMW F15 X5.

CAmera angles were insanely good, helps a lot! Thank you FCPEuro for helping us keep these pain in the ass cars affordable to own rather than pay a shop to do it!
Thanks Ryan, that means a lot
The team has been working super hard the past year on making sure no bolts/shots go missed on these DIY's , glad you can appreciate it!
One of the best mechanics and instruction videos on the internet!
Super glad Gareth uploaded some more X5 videos. I have an e70 Xdrive35i with the N55 💪 My water pump failed with only 47k miles lol. The power steering pump went out a couple months before, and the OFHG 2 months before that 😂All of my parts are from FCP Euro 💪💪💪💪
Got me a 3 series for my birthday, looks like i found my channel! Subscribed!
Best suggestion was approaching the top water pump bolt from the side. Also, upgrading the top flange from the block is easy while the fan is out.
Thanks for your videos guys! Especially N55 🙏
Happy to finally bring more N55 content back to the channel!
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL, THANK YOU. 2014 X5 F15 3.5xi
Thanks v much G - would never have attempted this but ur vid persuaded me.
For anyone attempting on a M235i the fan is different so check out a diff video on removing fan (most difficult part). After that it's only maybe 3hrs work. Deffo worth replacing thermo, mickey mouse flange and WP screws when u do this.
Awesome work G, thanks!
Thank you for the first-hand experience on the M235i!
This job on an F30 with N55 X drive was pure joy. The big front subframe made sure direct access was impossible. It was a PITA for sure but definitely DIYable.
How long did you it take for you to do it?
@@F30Gremlin Hi Benny, it took me about 6 hours, and most of that was taking a break from frustration. I could do both probably in 4 hours now. This includes taking breaks.
@@charlesberry4958 sounds great, u are giving me hope that i can actually do it by myself when the time comes. haha
Thanks for this video. It was a great help. And I really thank you for pointing out the hose flange that fails. I had ordered the pump kit from you, that came with the bolts and coolant as suggested. I'd suggest adding the flange and oring to the suggested parts. Part of the frustration is trying to figure out what I need to order. Having your website suggest all recommended parts for a repair, would be great. I'll have to pickup the flange locally tomorrow to finish this job. And I'm glad I took it out. It fell apart as I removed it.
Sooo.. what’s that flange part number?
@@zotac1170 CHC0609
Nice video!! If I just change my coolant reservoir only will I have to bleed the system. I'm not thinking of flushing all the coolant, just what ever was in the reservoir.
Lol yes you can get it out of the bottom from the side, DO NOT do it….Please follow his directions though….. where the hell was this video 4 years ago, I fought this pump for hours and gave up and came back and pulled it the through the side the next morning. Thank you for this DIY !! I am now less worried about the next failure in 30k.
Also the tell tail for this pump failure, is the fan running at full tilt for longs periods of time mine started doing it about a week before it died at 45k on my E70.
Can you cover the 35d diesel version of the X5 please
Great job
bmw charges 3k for this lmao
So disproportionate. Sure diy cheap but even an independent not going to be 1/3 of bmw dealershit
I see why it’s hard asf it took me all day taking off the fan
Totally clear superb vid, great camera work and crystal clear instructions! Bravo One question: is it critical to replace the W pump bolts, I would think not
Yes, absolutely, as the hardware is one-time use torque to yield.
You should include the flange as part of the replacement. Looks like a garage DIY, but most of us dont have lifts, so will be either on ramps or jackstands. Is there an alternative to removing that top water pump upper mounting bolt without removing the left tire and cover? Its gonna suck to need to remove a tire after its on ramps. It looks like from the top with a Dual Flex Ratchet might be able to reach, but that radiator looks pretty tight on space.
gareth is such a vibe
Super Thanks
The hose running from the engine block to the water pump, that also supplies the turbo coolant, what is the failure rate of this connection and the supply and return lines for the turbo? Is there a DIY to help with replacing it and the turbo supply and return lines?
Just what I was waiting for, F15 content, but you should always be clear about the engine code for each model in the title to make it easy to search. I have an X50i F15 with N63TU V8 engine which was not covered here.😥 Better ring lighting still encouraged. It would be a really great thing if Norma declared in a document which size O-rings are used in which spigot size connectors. That way we would know which O-rings to keep in stock.
Sorry Gary, we have a TON more X5 content on its way, most of which will pertain to your X50i aside from the N55 bits.
Some water pumps have the electronic box on the front and some on the back of the pump, should I check what kind is mine or any type can fit on the car?
Hello i have a 2012 x3 335i suv i was going to do the flush but i don't have a
drain plug. I just trying to find the easiest
way to flush the radiator without making
a mess.I looked all through you tube and the is no matching car like mine.
I ordered for a 2008, the pump that arrived has the connector at the back when the factory has the connector at the front near the propeller and inlet. I relocated the connector and it's working fine so far.. my box was already open so not sure what really happened here..
Does this procedure apply to E-series N55 engines? I have a 2013 E92 335i xDrive with an N55 engine. Or should I follow the N54 video?
Watch the video on water pump replacement does it have to be registered to the car
Does this work for all N55 variants? Like for the M235i?
Can you update the DIY Tutorial for G05 models, please?
Great video Garth. One of my next project. BIG question for you: Lots of discussion on the Forums about those (6) 16mm head (10mm threads) reinforcement plate bolts, as they are "torqued to yield". BMW TIS says to replace them BUT not many do. That being the case, what if you/I torque them to the 56Nm & only do about 45 deg additional.? Is that a bad idea? I wasn't sure I understood your recommendations. Thanks for the Aluminum coolant flange tip, great idea. Thanks again. We need more F15 videos!
I do not recommend using less torque angle if reusing the bolts. Doing so will not achieve the desired clamping load on the fasteners and could result in bolts backing out and falling off the vehicle from vibrations. Ideally, these bolts would be replaced with every installation. However, in the real world I assume these bolts are often not replaced and are most likely over torqued when reinstalled (impact guns). I reused these bolts several times over the course of filming DIY videos with the intention to replace them upon wrapping up filming. I had the reinforcement plate on and off the car more times in three weeks than most cars will see in a lifetime of services. I believe these bolts are safe to reuse several times as the final torque achieved with the torque angle is less than the average recommended torque for an M10 10.9 class bolt. I would be cautious about the coating being wiped away over multiple uses. The ZNS3 coating acts as an anti galling agent (and anti corrosion agent) and will be wiped away over several uses. Most bolts BMW recommend replacement on are ZNS3 coated as each installation wipes away this protective layer (which will increase the clamp load on the fastener). Despite these bolts in this specific application being torque angled I don't believe they are truly being tightened to the point of yield.
@@GarethFoley Thanks SOOO much for the reply. Makes me feel better on my DIY's! I'll be ordering the WP & Thermostat (AND) the ALUMINUM cooling line connections today or tomorrow. Do you want to make a house call & help me with this R&R? Free dinner!
@@GarethFoley HI Gareth, your videos have been really great to watch. No nonsense and straight to the point. I recently purchased a 2017 M2 (85,000miles) and am currently stockpiling service parts for a complete reset. This includes the cooling system.
Is this process the same for the F87? It looks very similar... and since I will be doing the WP, T-stat, flange housing and Charge Pipe, does it make sense to replace the hoses as well? I hope you can see this and reply! Would mean a lot to me and thanks :)
Is the procedure almost the same for the e70 X5 N55?
Did your water pump fail ? Or you just changed it cause you know it might cause of the miles of the car? Great video btw
It didn't fail on this car. Just replacing it preventatively. Given the wide window in mileage these water pumps tend to fail I personally opt to change at the lower end of the known failure range which is 65K miles.
Thanks for video. Have you done a oil pan replacement job on F32 N20 engine?
We have not posted on yet, no Angelo, but can add it to the list.
@@fcpeuro thanks😀
how much does this job cost?
I cried watching this. I wish the F10 had the same thermostat to radiator mounting design. This 3 inch hose in between the two is not fun to remove.
The only thing I miss from these videos is the DIY (home) instructions without special pressure pump to refill the coolant, or when they showed how to fill the transmission fluid with a special pump as well. a how to do it at home without fancy stuff from professional shop would've been more instructive.
Thank you for the note, Bruno!
Didn’t cover air inlet. Did you?)
Would this be basically the same process for a 2010 X5 335D? Do you sell the kit for the diesel model?
Any kits works
About to do this to my 2017 x5 only owned it for 3 weeks and the warning came on.
You got this, Manuel!
radiator damage from pull thermostat
Can this procedure work on f30 and f32?
If equipped with an N55, the procedure will be the same, with the exception of some of the working room you may have!
How similar is this job on the x3 f25 n55
Hi David, very similar for the most part! Some hardware may be in different locations, but otherwise, the same general idea.
May I ask you a question…
Could the electronic water pump caused to drain the battery of the car completely dead?
I have x5 2015 xdrive35
Dealer charge me 1600 + battery 700
Others have reported that
Yes, I am literally having this issue right now. The moment I shut the car off, the pump starts to work and will drain my battery.
Mine did the same thing. Battery discharge about 4-5 days before the water pump failed.
Factory water pump?
I’m going through the same issue now. 😂
I am mid process. My first serious DIY. Man this is painful process!!
You got this!
Thanks, just put water pump and thermostat back. The most difficult part was to remove the hoses from the water pump and unscrew the top bolt. It was much easier to put it all back. Also replaced the plastic coolant hose flange and installed the crab seal guard. aNow awaiting belt tensioner and pulley to replaced it, install the belt and will be good to go!
When BMW's wasn't unreliable enough. BMW uses plastic thermostat that will fail faster and uses electric water pump. We a know BMW not good in electrical parts.
Morden cars = rubbish. All this hard work for water pump and thermostat. 😏
I got 196,000 out of my original water pump.
What a terrible engine.
lol what? You must not own a n55 let alone a bmw.
Pretty reliable engine.
I just bought a 2014 x5 with the n55. It’s a 63k. Should I just do it so it doesn’t fail? I’ll never understand how bmw manages to supply water pumps for the last 20 plus years that can’t make it more than 60k lol. I didn’t realize when I bought the car that it was still this way, everyone was telling me how bulletproof the n55 was.
Omg I just did this on an m235i with just removing the bottom splash guards and air cleaner 🫡
Nice work, Nancy!
I’m doing it atm how you get out the fan
