Mia Morris “Opening for Collective Soul” music & music business vlog #54

- I was born in Indianapolis and lived there through sixth grade. After I discovered the drums, I began taking lessons from various instructors and one of them was Johnny Rabb. Johnny is a world renowned drummer and instructor and I could write for a long time about all of his accomplishments in the music industry. He’s a clinician, performer, producer, equipment designer, has been on magazine covers, and of course, he’s the drummer for Collective Soul. Most importantly, he’s a funny, enthusiastic and genuinely kind human.
He took the time to give me drum lessons over the years and he also took the time to talk with me and my father all about the Nashville music scene where he had previously lived and worked. Even after moving to Nashville, we kept in touch and occasionally ran into each other in our various musical endeavors. I had recently mentioned to him that I was doing more opening performances on some of the tours I was hired on and that it was something I was keen on doing more of. I knew Johnny had a bunch of friends in the music business but I didn’t expect a text from him a few weeks later asking if I might be available to open for Collective Soul.
Obviously, it was instant yes but because of the short notice and my already busy schedule, I didn’t get to do a lot of filming. I did get in a fair amount of practicing and it was an absolute blast preparing and performing for Collective Soul and their fans. As a matter of fact, it might just be my favorite live music moment of 2023. Collective Soul put on a great show, the crew and venue were top notch and the fans were welcoming and enthusiastic. I hope you enjoy what I as able to film and make sure you watch all the way to the end to see Johnny Rabb show a little of what brought him to elite status in the drumming world.
I’m 19 years old and I’m a professional musician, songwriter & artist based out of Nashville. I play lots of instruments but the ones that I’m hired to play most often are drums, cajon and bass. I’ve been posting music related videos on CZcams since I was 9 years old and began playing professionally at 14. I’ve always loved music and I’m grateful that it’s also become how I now make a living. This channel started as a combination of my fascination with drums and CZcamsrs and it’s now turned into a much larger music and music business diary. My goals haven’t changed all that much over the years and stay pretty simple. I’d love to keep making music and hope to keep getting better at it.

Yeah , How Awesome !!!!! Big Time Fan Appreciation For MIA Morris., Right Here !!!!!
Having watched since you were a tiny little baby drummer, it is such a joy to have been able to watch you grow into a skilled musician who is following her dreams and making them come true. Congratulations!!!
haha :) thank you, seriously - I appreciate that very much.
My second concert I ever attended was an Alice Cooper concert. The opening act was a very unknown band called Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Those opening acts can get real famous.
One of the first outdoor concerts I ever attended, the headliner was Dr Hook, and the opening act was an unknown girl band, The Runaways. One of those 17-year-old girls was Joan Jett. (Boulevard Mall, Buffalo NY, August 25 1976)
I saw Journey open for Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
I’ve been watching her since she was able to respond back to some comments here on CZcams! Now she’s famous. Very cool.
Hey Mia. Thanks for this fantastic Vlog. I appracite you and your Dads efforts to bring these to us. Of course a fab archive for you too.
You sure have some great connections, and well earned too. So sure it helps to know great folk, but your hard work is what gets you on that stage. Good of Johnny to tee this one up.
For sure you won't always be able to get things filmed you want, but what you have here is great. Your vlogs are always worth checking out. Your discriptions always worth a read.
With your many vlogs over the years, like your preformances on stage, there is always something fresh in what you say or do, even if its a topic/song mentioned before.
Planned or not, it's fantastic, and just one of many reasons why I will never get tired of hearing about your music life.
Thanks Mia. Have a fab weekend.
Well said, Mark. Enjoy your summer. Almost here.
I can hardly wait
So cool! I've loved Collective Soul since they first came out. So cool they were lucky enough to get you to open for them! ❤
I've watched you since you were very young... I absolutely loved your guitar solo and had an emotional reaction. I have seen you play bass on your channel but this is the first time I have heard a lead solo. Good luck to you in the future. I still play the short of you playing drums in what looks like a college setting - it makes me happy.
wow. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that because I know and love the sensation of music just hitting me and filling me with emotion, sometimes without warning. That's one of the highest compliments in my opinion, thank you :)
Great vlog video Mia! Have a great weekend
Congrats on getting that gig. Turned Only When It Rains into a blues song 👍. I know I've said it before but I'll say it again, I love the sound of that guitar. That bluesy solo was hot! Dare I say touching? Take care 😊
Grab that brass ring and thrive, Mia. So happy you're livin' your best life! More drums, more drummers! After all, they help the band know when the stage is level. (The drool comes out of BOTH sides of their mouth. HA!) Fun fact from this ol' country drummer...
It's so incredibly to see you doing what you love and having a blast while doing it! Your absolutely amazing Mia. I love your music..... 👍🏼
so kind - thank you so much Burt!
Thanks again for the music ❤
I’m excited to watch this vlog

Hey Larry - thank you! We were in Marietta which looked to be right next to WV. I think I learned to drive in your state... sorry about that :)
:) ❤❤❤@@miamorrismusic
Wow very cool Mia👊😎🎼🥁
She could be my daughter but is amazing how at her age I was listening collective soul while I was studying in high school, and young people can sing these old songs still, it makes generations connected
Thanks for this excellent vlog, Mia. That solo for " Only When it Rains" was amazing. Congratulations on opening for Collective Soul as well. That must have been a lot of fun. Can't wait to see your live performance someday. It's a bucket list item for me. ❤
It was absolutely what I want to do, thank you. I'm going to play out a lot more in 2024 so hopefully, i get near you :)
This could be one of the very best videos you've ever put out! And I've been here since the very beginning MiaMia days!
:) It was a special moment in what I hope is still just the beginning, so thank you very much. Of course I also know, anything/everything can and sometimes does change in unexpected ways. I appreciate you taking the time.

Cool gig for you Mia. Sounded really cool too... 😎👍👍
Brilliant as always!!!
Cool guitar solo! Yeah Johnny Rabb is insanely good, so cool that you're friends with him, mind you, he's lucky to be friends with you too. 😊
:) thanks and yes, Johnny is a good one all around.
Congratulations on 85k subscribers
Was hoping I’d get to see some of your ‘soul’ experience. Was not disappointed per usual. 🙌🙌
Wonderful.
That was really cool Mia. Your guitar skills are killer, and you got the audience to sing along with you. Collective Soul is one of my favorite bands. Okay, so Ohio might not be a very exciting town, but at least they have a Cracker Barrel. No technical issues either, a small blessing.
As always, I love watching your vlogs and videos. Don't forget, you owe me a Halloween costume pic. 🤠
I will post something for you - in costume :D
Thanks. @@miamorrismusic
Great talent! Makes me happy to watch you! Keep it up till decades more! Continue to be an inspiration!
Hell yeah Mia!!!!!!

Mia impresses me. She's got her guitar singing along with her. And now doing 'warm up act' stuff. Forward seems to have always been her direction. Write more about everything. You have a special way with words. Bravo.
Always takes a discerning crowd to get behind a true musical genius Mia!! Love it
Guitar at the beginning was the perfect choice and just pierced!
Audience participation is tough. Having a band along with you makes it much easier. You having a blast backstage would seem to suggest/confirm this.
I'm not suggesting you're on his level yet. Though, the path seems likely. Your comfort flowing around the stage while letting your guitar sing reminds me of Slash.
I was 30 feet from him on a side stage at Summerfest in Milwaukee while he was playing with his side band at the time. He just flows with the guitar. So do you.
You're young. You're not supposed to stand still, right?
Outstanding achievement!
I appreciate your kind and thoughtful comment. I'm just getting started with all of this from an solo artist standpoint but it's absolutely inspiring and challenging me. Thanks for caring and taking the time.
@miamialynn - Thank you for sharing your art! Always remember what Simon shared with you on AGT. You've got talent, Mia. Singular. You need not play everything all at once to show this off. The ability to play multiple instruments, switching within a full set list, puts you in a different class of performer for your generation and overall time in musical history.
Awesome job! And I totally love Collective Soul!
Thank you Stan - I'm with ya
Collective Soul with Better Than Ezra was the best tour ever.
Extremely talented! Love your music!
Thank you so much!

nice! Thank you so much.
Your Way Cool ❤ keep Rocken
Thank you - on it :)
So firstly, congrats on the gig! Johnny Rabb is one of my favorite purveyors of ghost notes! Two interesting questions: do you think you were influenced by Collective Soul's "shine" for your riff in "don't get me started"? Both songs use a rhythmical bass line, "shine", c flat-e-f sharp-g; "d.g.m.s", d-f-g-g sharp. Secondly since you took drum lessons from him, did Johnny Rabb influence you to pursue drums and your move to Tennessee?
Really good questions - I actually wondered the same thing about DGMS after I listened to, Shine about a month ago. I was contemplating what I wanted to shoot for the promo and toyed with playing a few CS riffs when the similarities struck me. I wrote, DGMS for Bailey and at the time, I was writing a bunch in drop D more as a general, "grunge" technique vs a specific CS reference but I know that everything I hear makes it's way into my creative toolbox so - probably :) As for Johnny, my dad had extensive conversations with him about Nashville but he had left there after some significant frustrations with the abundance of musicians all looking for the same jobs. Johnny has been and obviously still is, a huge help to me but not in our pursuing Nashville. He actually brought it up when I saw him at the show about how, after seeing what I've done here, he was so glad we made our own decision on that.
@miamialynn great answer, thanks
[edit: *c flat; I meant d flat]
I ❤ u mia ur sooo smart and talented u kick ass
Thank you so much for digging into so much of my music & work :) I sincerely appreciate you taking the time.
Very Cool
👍🏻
And I knew her when 💗💗💗💗💯✌️🤘🤘🤘
Hope you catch a massive break and make it bug time because you're brimming with talent Until then, stay healthy, happy and refrain from tatting your unadulterated skin ✌️
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Question: Is this the first time you've been the opening act at a concert as a one woman band? I think it is. Okay, next step...
I got some practice in with small settings but not much at all with this standing configuration so yes, this is really my first legit opening show as a solo/looping artist :)
Dude where was this if it was around me I'm gonna be pissed if I didn't get to go
Love Cracker Barrel
same :D
@@miamorrismusic I would love a Cracker Barrel vlog-here’s a million$ idea you can steal, collab with Cracker Barrel and a car company to drive across country and hit a Cracker Barrel in every state. You promote the car and the diversity and consistent quality of Cracker Barrel. Just need a hotel chain to sponsor you too, and you can book a gig in every state you stop in too. I know I know I’m a genius.
Did Green Day influence you? I hear a lot of similarities between you and them
幸運を❤
:)
named after Lenny Kravitz?
yes - he let's love rule
Love You Miss Greenscreen!! Awesome!!
