After a good period of training, I attempted to take on RatRace's "The Wall" - a 70 mile ultramarathon, in June 2022. This is my experience of the race.

LIKE & SUBSCRIBE ❤ Have you got The Wall booked? Let me know! It’s a great race 👍
I've just booked - this will be my first ultra! Can I ask your thoughts on backpack type and capacity - struggling to decide what to go for? Many thanks
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it. I’m no expert but I’ve been using Salomon Advance Skin 12 Set with soft flasks for pretty much every long run and ultra and it’s amazing. There are lots of other brands out there though. Something that doesn’t move about too much on your back and has lots of pockets 👍 hopefully see you at The Wall in 2024!
Yes me and my mate are taking this on and it looks amazing. I have one question for you….. did you run the first part in trail shoes before changing into road shoes for the end.
Damn. This was filmed and edited superbly. What an experience! Thanks for taking us along for the ride
Thanks so much Dan, means a lot dude! Glad I could share it 👍
Great insight Mike. 6 days away from my first crack at ‘The Wall’…your film has certainly helped with the mental preparation. Top man 👏
Great to hear it was helpful! Good luck at The Wall, it really is great fun 🔥 all the best
Well done Mike. The little street-party pit stop at Ovingham was my favourite bit. I asked a lady for a cup of coke and it perked me right up.
Thanks! You too. Yes that was awesome. I didn’t manage to capture it but it made my day!
Well done very impressive ,the friendships u make on these runs is amazing and all the local support helps
Superb, great film, great effort, amazing. Genuinely inspiring, thanks for posting.
Chapeau Mike. Great effort and well done to everyone who finished.
So inspiring Mike! What an epic journey! Loved the video mate! Production value was through the roof really well edited and it told the story really well. You are a top class CZcamsr Mike and I really enjoy your content. Thank you for sharing this epic adventure with us and I look forward to seeing you smash the NDW100! Huge kudos bro! 😎🤘
That’s so kind Ben and means a lot coming from you mate 👍 all the best
Thanks
Thanks so much!
Well done dude....I really enjoyed your journey.
Great footage - doing it in three weeks and great to see some of the course. Aiming for 15hrs myself so this makes me feel better. Awesome run.
Ah fantastic! Enjoy and good luck 💪🏼
Great video. You made it look easy…..well done 👍🍷
Thanks Emlyn 👍 all the best for 2023!
That was great, you were great.
Thanks that’s kind 👍👍

Thanks so much! It was perfect weather to be honest 💪🏼👍👍
Congratulations on a great 70-mile race ‘Mike! Amazing footage of the race, well done! I love all the scenic views and that sunset! It looks like you really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to more videos!
Thanks Gill! Really appreciated 👍👍
Absolutely brilliant video compilation. Loved it. I live up here too so nice to see the places I walk and frequent. You've made me want to sign up to next year's race now!!
Ah thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 👍 I’d recommend it, I had a great day out there! Thanks for watching
Love the enthusiasm! Looking forward to running this next year.
Thanks Rory - you’ll love it, it’s such a good atmosphere! All the best with the training 💪🏼

Fantastic video I’m doing this in June can’t wait to
Glad your enjoyed the video and I hope you have a good race! I’ll be there too hopefully ✌️
Mike everything about this is just stunning! The entire video is just so well done and you seemed to run the race with such ease. Great watch and great run. Looking forward to seeing your NDW100.
Thanks so much, really kind of you 👌 I tried to show how the run went (warts and all) but it went really well! It doesn’t always go like that 😂 NDW100 - so excited! Cheers for watching
AMAZING what an inspiration you are. You've have given me food for thought it looks a great ultra.
I did my first 50k ultra at the weekend. Hips felt like they seized up the last 4 miles. The next day I joined a gym to up my strength training. I have a 40 miler in Sept.
WELL DONE.. really enjoyed watching your training videos. Keep it u.
Thanks for watching! Well done on your first ultra 👍💪🏼 good idea to take on 50k before the 40 miler. I’ve found running ultra gets quite addictive! All the very best with your training and thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the post. Did the race in 2019-but finished in the dark. Nice to see the end in the day light! Inspired.
Well done! It’s a very long way. I hope you enjoyed it 💪🏼💪🏼
Cracking video and cracking effort. Production quality is awesome 😎👍
Thanks Daniel really appreciated 👍
What an epic achievement Mike and beautifully captured. Great to see the training pay off and that you got better weather for it than last time. Haha - 'trails finally' - can definitely relate to that feeling! Well done on the race, amazing to see it all come together and hope the recovery is going well.
Thanks dude! Really appreciated. Hoping it’s an upward trend and as I find ultras more comfortable I hope to get better at them. Just loved it though! Good luck to Carla for the weekend!! 👍💪🏼
Beautiful running journey, Mike! Great filming, beautiful race footage my friend! Glad I found your channel! Fully watched with huge appreciation, mate! All the best wishes!
Thank you - that’s really kind of you 👍💪🏼👌
Superb effort. 70 miles is amazing to cover! Makes us tired thinking about it. :-) Some lovely views of the course . Hope your recovery is going well!
Thank you both! Wonderful views on the day, beautiful part of the world. Recovery is excellent thanks 🙏 back to training tomorrow!!
It's been a decade since I ran The Wall, how time flies! Well done on recording the journey Mike, I do have memories of more road than I wanted & not enough trail. Well done on dipping under the 15hr Mark, as you say, the training paid off 👍
Thanks so much! Really appreciated. I wonder if the route has changed in ten years. There were definitely sections that weren’t familiar from 2018. All the very best 👍
That’s Awesome! Truly Inspiring! Cheers! 🥂❤️✨
Thanks Juan that’s really appreciated!! 👍👍
Loved the video as usual! Felt like I was at the race too how you shot the video. Amazing effort, well done, and looking forward to the next one! 👏👏 Favorite part: “ooh, sheep!”😂
Thanks TJ - really appreciated! Haha yes I like looking for wildlife, keeps me busy 😂 as long as it’s not a cow.
Great video, thank you! I'm running next year!
Amazing! See you there!
I'm doing this next year! My first ultra , can't wait :)
Hope you enjoy it! Cheers for watching
Wow Mike!!! What a race! Incredible effort and running. Also I am impressed with your film making skills, so skilled and thought out. I wouldn't have a clue how to do what you did. Congratulations on your achievement and for documenting it so beautifully.
Thanks Olga! 👍😊
Loved the video Mike. Great bit of filming and editing. Such a happy video to watch, I love your "run with a smile" attitude, it made it such an enjoyable watch. I have subscribed to see your North Downs Way run. Hope the training is going well.
Thanks! Really appreciated 👍 training is stop/start but I’m looking forward to it 😎
Incredible achievement Mike and beautifully filmed! Well done 👍 🏃🏻♂️🏁
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the feedback 👍👍
I really enjoyed watching this video, huge congrats on completing this race, amazing achievement! I can't quite wrap my head around running such a long distance, this is crazy to me haha and I have so much admiration for ultra runners. I hope your legs are recovering ok!
Aww thanks Chloe, that’s high praise - I’ve enjoyed lots of your videos too (albeit I’m catching up having only found you recently!) - legs all good thanks. I would say if you ever want to run that distance, The Wall is pretty good as a first 70 miler. I’m doing it next year too hopefully 👍👍👍 keep up the great content
Wow! This really has me fired up to go long.... ultra in fact! Beautiful course! Thank you for sharing and congratulations!
Thanks so much! I’ve enjoyed several of your videos so it means a lot 👍👍
@@30somethingmike I appreciate your support! Keep pushing my friend!
I loved this video 😊
Thanks!
Good effort man well done
Thanks Stuart!
Incredible achievement well done 👍
Thank you! 👍
Yes yes yes #smashedit
Cheers matey
Well done! I enjoyed this! Looks great, loved the effort in the editing as well. Always a great feeling going back to smash a past effort. I’ll keep an eye out for your NDW100. Best of luck!
Thanks very much! Only trouble is that I want to go and try again next year and beat it 😂 enjoying your content too - some great vids 👍👍
@@30somethingmike That's the spirit! Keep pushing yourself, it's amazing when you realise what you can actually do! Keep it up!
Congratulations Mike! Both on your race achievement but also on your filming and editing of the day. Looks like you got away with the plan to taper early and you seem to have survived this distance unscathed 😀 When I did my 1st 100m in 2020 I did a brilliant 100k (just at home, not an event) and if I’d not have ended up with an illness bug in the 2 weeks leading to the race I know that that training run would have been perfect prep for the big one. Hope you get some good rest, the body settles well and a few easy miles to tide you over and I’m sure you’ll have a great North Downs 100! 🏃🏻
Ah thanks Rachel! I did seem to get away with the long taper thank goodness. I do have some blisters - maybe I should have tried crocs! 😂 that’s reassuring to hear about your race - which 100m did you do? Good luck with your LDWA run today!
@@30somethingmike - I ran the White Horse Ultra in Wiltshire in 2020 and 2021 but they aren’t holding it this year but swapping it for a 50&100 in the Peak District instead. Great event by a company called Beyond Marathon/Cockbain Events but they don’t let you use poles 😭
@@racheld1844 ooh I might check that out. Love that part of the world!
Really nicely done, Mike. I was on the course and at the Newburn Pit Stop not long before 8pm - we must have just missed each other. Well done :)
Ah Simon! Thanks so much for watching and sorry to have missed you on the course. Such a lovely day. Will definitely have another go again I think. Hope alls well with you!
@@30somethingmike All good thanks, I'm currently in the early stages of training for The Big Half in London in September. Not sure I'll ever do another ultra - but you never know ;)
@@NERunner hope it’s going well! I’ll look out for the video 😁
Great film. Re aid stations - Do you have a set time that you rest and refuel at them ? Or see how it goes on the day of the race and see how you feel ? Taking part in my 1st Ultra in a week and wondering about this topic. Thanks
Thanks! I would take it as you find it on the day. That said, spending too long in aid stations when you don’t need to will unnecessarily affect your overall time of course. Good luck!
Excellent result and a great video, well done. Consider me subbed!
Thanks!! Really appreciated 👍💪🏼
Hi Mike - congratulations on the race finish and well done on the videos! Out of interest, what trainers did you go for in the end - trail or road?
Thanks Martin - I went for a sturdy trail shoe in the end, but with footbeds to add some cushioning for the road sections. They performed marvellously!
Great - thanks @@30somethingmike
Fantastic, Mike 👍🏻🏃♂️ Not surprised your legs were sore on that one. What do you think upset your stomach towards the end?
Thanks Mark, much appreciated! I think it was just the amount of sugar I ate throughout the day, as well as dehydration possibly. I need to work on my nutrition a bit! 👍
Great video - thanks! I have signed up for this in 2024, my first ultra! Would you recommend normal running trainers or trail runners for this?
Thanks for watching! Hope it was helpful. Glad to hear - you’ll love it!
It’s tricky as the majority of the race is on paved surfaces or gravel paths but the section in the middle is on grass & tracks. As long as it’s dry that time of year a good pair of road shoes with decent grip should be fine, but I would avoid wearing super shoes or something like that 😂 I wore a less aggressive trail shoe with an insole and that got me through though. good luck with the training!!
@@30somethingmike that’s really helpful - thank you!
Inspiring stuff Mike. I have yet to tackle this kind of distance, but it seems like a exciting and tough challenge. What was the ratio of trail to gravel to road in this race? Congrats on the finish!!!
Side note, you are a natural on camera and your production quality is great. Keep up the good work brotha!
Thanks mate, that’s very kind! It’s embarrassing talking to a camera isn’t it? 😂
It was probably 80% paved or gravel I would guess. The Pennines in the middle section were very hilly and off road, which was excellent
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Well done on your finish time mate, that’s an excellent effort (especially for somebody filming!!), I found myself about 3 hours behind you!! 🤣 Just uploading my Rat Race 2022 VLog now too! It premieres today at 18:30, come join! 🎥 🍿
Oh cool yeah I’ll check it out!! Well done, it was a long way whatever the time 😂👍👌 great work
video so beautiful

Love this mate, I was about 8 minutes in front of you but did t look anywhere near as fresh as you did at the end 🥴
Great video, thank you.
