That’s my favorite part of the store. I know how to make those scuffed up looking records sound better than new. I’ve restored some pretty rough ones to sound amazing, with virtually no snaps crackles or pops, it’s a fun part of the hobby imho.

      Artamus Sumatra what’s your trick?

    • @artamussumatra6286

Chris Propfe: Musically Obsessed Look for records where the scratches don’t appear to go all the way to to bottom of the grooves. Surface scratches look bad, but they don’t necessarily interfere with the path of the stylus. If it looks like someone popped it with a steel hammer, avoid it.😆
      1) I first give the record a bath with warm water and a drop of dish soap, being careful not to wet the label, using a microfibre cloth going with the radius of the grooves, not sideways. Scrub a touch harder on areas where it looks like the scratch has pulled some vinyl into the path of the stylus. Rinse well, let dry.
      2) Using a rubber spatula, or a credit card, apply Titebond II wood glue around one side - again, going with the grooves, and being careful not to get any on the label. If you sit the record in front of a fan, it should only take 15 to 20 minutes to dry. When it looks black again, it’s ready. Once dry, repeat on the other side.
3)Peel off the glue(Titebond II works best, because it stays pliable after it’s dry), the record grooves will be about as clean as they were when new, but will now be full of static, which will cause a lot of surface noise, so....
      4) I like to use GruvGlide, which eliminates static, and applies a super slick coating that buffers the stylus from completely touching the vinyl, further minimizing surface noise, and wear. I’ve also tried dryer sheets lightly drapped over the record for a few minutes, not as good, but cheap, and workable.
That’s it, works great! You might want to practice on a cheap record that you don’t like at first, but it’s really easy to get the method down. I do it to all used records I buy, even if they look near mint. I also use GruvGlide on brand new ones, because they usually will have a lot of static build up.

Bryan Mcfadden The dish soap dissolves the soluble crud, like skin oils, and sheddings, the wood glue picks up the solid matter, dust, and grit from the bottom of the grooves. I thought it was a crazy idea when I first learned of it, but it really does work.
Also, I use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser method to clean my stylus after every session.

I totally agree. Luckily for us some people can't tell a scuff from a scratch and put it back on the rack. For those wondering, scuffs are merely "cosmetic" markings but don't damage the groves like scratches do.

I remember my friends decided that they wanted to look through the dollar bins at the record store near my house. At first, I thought, "eh there probably isn't really anything that great in there but it's worth a shot." We got to the store and I sit down and look through my first box at the store. As it turns out, I managed to walk away with Signals by Rush, Fly By Night by Rush, Hemispheres by Rush, an original pressing of Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd and an original pressing of The Wall by Pink Floyd. Let's just say that I haven't stopped looking in the dollar bins since then!

Recently I grabbed an original pressing of Marvin Gaye's What's Going on.
The jacket was a bit beat, the vinyl was filthy. It cleaned up beautifully.
I've found so many in the dollar bin that look rough but cleans up and play well.
Tommy, Songs in the Key of Life, Ram, Allman's Live at Fillmore, and so much more.
These don't add value toy collection and aren't really sellable, but sometimes I like to test a record out before buying a good copy. And most of the time I just keep them.

When I was broke college student, I would almost always ship exclusively from Dollar Bins...or 50 Cent bins. It was that long ago. Rarely found anything actually valuable, but almost always found good stuff to listen to. Once moving to LA, the monthly Yard Sale at the Rhino Records store (where everything was a dollar) bulked up my record collection pretty quickly. Best score as far as value was at a Salvation Army thrift store out in the desert, where I found some private pressing Christian hippie rock records (two copies) from 1970 for a dollar each. Sold one on E-Bay to a collector in Japan for about $150.

To me There is no bad and ugly... Only ones I do not buy is if I have it in better shape.
Thank you for not totally crapping on my homie Herb Alpert. He is one artist I focus on and I appreciate his whole catalog.
I love it when my subscribers grab random cheap records (Many not having covers) that they find for $1... 4 for a dollar... in a bin being thrown out... and ship them to me to be loved and given a 2nd life... The discovery of them is the most intoxicating experience for me. Cleaning... reparing and sometimes recreating the jackets are so fulfilling for me!

Some of my best finds have been at dollar store bins. Your right about thrift store vinyl with the stores becoming more aware of the more valuable records so they mark them up. Then there are the flippers who go to the stores often. Yes if you have an electric taste in music then there are still good finds out there at thrift stores. I give all my thrift store vinyl purchases a deep cleaning before playing because you do not know what the previous owner had put on them and there are a lot of fingerprints and dust.

Back in the '70's and '80's I found lots of great finds in the cutout bins. Nowadays not so much. One of my best finds of all time was the first Stooges album on Elektra, for 33 cents. Also found a good Beach Boys album ("Friends") and a few others in the same bin, at K Mart. Cutout bins used to be great for finding excellent avant-garde classical. Those didn't sell very well simply because the genre was never very popular. Back then record stores had plenty of space to stock all kinds of things just to see if they'd sell. Nowadays every square inch is valuable and they don't take chances on those kinds of things anymore. But I find good stuff now as used CD's on Amazon, so the hunt continues for great bargains.

You first have to establish what the purpose of the $1 bins in a particular store. Some used record stores don't put out trashed records others might put them in there just to see if they can get rid of it for a buck. The stores that don't put the trashed records in their bins use them to move out stock that sells slowly or that they have several copies, or that has a jacket in rough shape. They need to keep cash flowing in and make room for records that potentially sell for more money, and or faster. If they purge their regular bins to make room these $5 to $8 suddenly become $1 records. On a show weekday someone like me walks in and buys 100 records they just put generated enough to cover half the electric bill that month. I've got plenty of great vinyl with trashed covers or records that don't appeal to the hipsters. You don't get much better than Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, Pure Prairie League, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, David Bromberg, or any number of classic country artists. But those records just aren't the ones that are "cool" these days. I'll take em all day long and twice on Sunday.

I've found excellent mint condition vinyls in the 1$ bin at some record stores here in Brazil. The explanation for the jewels you found is that millions of copies of those Motley, Joan Jett were sold back in the day. Stores tend to receive complete collections as donations or whole sale and they end up with lots of repeated copies. Soundtracks that sold millions have the same trouble.
I don't know if you still check for Cds but all stores seem to have a zillion copies of Forest Gump just to give you a title.
Thanks for sharing . Here in Río constant low price bin titles are albums that sold millions of units here in the 80's by A-Ha, Simple Red, Terence trend Darby, Rick Astley.

We'd probably call them bargain boxes in the UK, or Pound Bin specials. I have got some decent stuff for a £, but it's rare now and records are more likely to be over-priced for the condition they are in even in Charity shops. You CAN still get bargain CDs however. I recently picked up an immaculate copy of Oasis's (What's The Story) Morning Glory? for £1.

I've mostly converted to CD for the time being for that reason. I'm aiming to collect every hit ever, so it's a great time to buy. Easy to digitised and some of my local shops do 20p each and 5 for £1. The downside is I've bought over 1,000 in the last year and a bit and running out of fast turnover for new hits. Singles are remarkably hard to find compared to albums.

Charity shops make me laugh regarding records nowadays,, whoever prices them clearly has no idea,, a local charity shop near me amassed that much stuff, I found it all on eBay starting at £1, litterly hundred and hundreds of shitty Lps. ( No I didn't buy em) the point is they overprice the stuff no one wants and end up with crap they can't even get rid of,

Typical cast offs at the thrift stores were those Reader's Digest record Box sets for 4 or 5 bucks. They're usually are in pristine shape too with no scratches whatsoever. I always felt sorry for the original owners of these collections as they once forked out anywhere from $65-$70 for them back in the mid to late 1960s.

Took a quick trip to Calgary recently and visited Melodiya Records and Hot Wax Records - both selling new and used vinyl. Both locations have an entire floor dedicated to $1 and $2 LPs in really, really good/great condition. We're not talking collector or rare stuff but certainly lots & lots of essentials. The stores are obviously associated with each other because they hand out the same double-sided business card. Anyway, highly recommended for anyone heading in that direction.

So here is my take on it - I hit Goodwill stores and recently I picked up three Deutsche Grammophon records in near mint condition, which makes a total of twelve I found this year. Okay, everyone is not into classical music. I also found a Joe Henderson Blue Note CD and a great Pete Escovedo CD on Concord, I have a weakness for Salsa 💃. CD’s are great when I am working around the house.

I love the $1 bins! Yes you have to search through endless copies of records most of us 40 somethings who like rock don't want, but when you find that buried gem...what a thrill! I've also found that once I get them home and clean them throughly (one of my favorite things to do with this hobby) many of them sound remarkably good. I've found that certain scuffs and scratches don't necessarily affect play. My favorite score recently was an original Ace Frehley solo album with the purple misprint lettering on the back, intact poster and inner sleeve. The cover is a solid VG and the album is VG to VG+. The store I shop at you can get ten $1 records for $5 and I happen to get ten that day. So I actually got the Ace Frehley record for .50 cents! Love your channel Frank, awesome Motley Crue find btw and keep on digging...in the dollar bins!

Like yourself my best luck was yard sales, garage sales etc. Was able to score 10$ to around 30$ albums for .25 to .50 cents! Those days are over now as people have been educated on value just like the record stores. There are some decent finds in the dollar bins and its made easier if store owners just toss the beat up and unsalvegable ones and keep the nicer ones like you found. Why anyone would hold onto an album that looks like it was played with sand paper and try to resell it is beyond me. If the cover is in great condition then its good for a wall hanger like for your garage. Crate digging can be the best part of vinyl hunting and album art hunting. Hope you find some nice covers for that project.

Two of them are favorites, clean copies of Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Jim Croce's You Don't Mess Around With Jim. I would have paid more than a dollar for each of those. Score for me! I mostly skip the dollar bin because at my local record store all the dollar records are stored in the recesses below the main record bins. @@Channel33RPM Yep, you're about 2 or 3 years older than I am. I bought the OST well before I saw the movie on cable at the suggestion of my uncle. He saw there was a Glenn Frey track on it so he bought it for me. As for why my bio dad made me get rid of it....I had just met him for the first time ever and he didn't reveal his aversion to secular (or is it non-secular) music until I was unpacking my stuff. Had to get rid of that, my Power Station cassette, my Bryan Adams 45s (Run To You & Somebody), Duran Duran 45s (The Wild Boys, A View To A Kill & the Arena version of Save A Prayer), a Howard Jones 45 (Things Can Only Get Better), a couple CCR albums my uncle gave me (he had duplicates so he gave me his older copies of Willie & The Poorboys & Cosmo's Factory) and any other mixtapes or albums copied from vinyl that I had. Thankfully, only lived there for a year. Haven't seen him physically since 1987 for my 12th birthday. Anyhow, all that stuff I had to get rid of, I replaced in in later years on CD or vinyl so I guess it wasn't all bad I guess.

Hi Frank....Super Channel!!......you should do a video on how much you typically pay for an album (not box sets) and are they new or used & what %age of your collection (and other VC folks) are used (not originally bought by you) vs new issues & where do you buy them % wise (stores, on line, Flea or used shops etc. ) and general condition. This would give a good indication to your & other VC record library make-up and about how much they have into it. It also gives a good idea of about how much $ is spent monthly on purchased vinyl. Also what insurance value to have on them. Thanks!!

The thing with dollar bins is everything in there that I’d want I already have. I did get my mom into vinyl, so I will go into the dollar bin looking for stuff for her. A lot of the record stores here have dollar sales once or twice a year. One even does three for a dollar. At one of those dollar sales I found a VG+ copy of Prince’s Dirty Mind. The other day I Found Girls, Girls, Girls for a buck. It’s scuffed up but it PLAYS VG+.
I went on Marketplace last week and found a guy selling a copy of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds with the Australian cover for 5.00. He had no idea what he was selling (it’s worth about 65.00). I felt a little bad, but I still grabbed it.

In German, we would say 1€-Kiste (1€ box) or Grabbelkiste (rummage box, a very fitting term I find). Most stores I visit in Germany and the Netherlands have 1€ bins and many focus on quantity. That means some mostly sell records from 0.50€ to 3, 4€ with a few very expensive exceptions. Others have new vinyl to the usual prices, valuable used ones for similar prices and still a lot of cheap ones. I found one of my grails there, a copy of Harry Belafonte at Carnegie Hall in very decent condition for 1€ - never saw it before anywhere below 20€ or something. I mostly listen to classical music though, and either it goes for absurdly high prices because sellers think it is music for rich people, or it goes straight into the 1€, 2€ bins - which is great. Most sellers happen to get them when they buy collections and are just looking to shift them asap to gain space. Classical records are not very popular and the value of those LPs and different pressings is a world of its own that most sellers have no time or interest to get involved in. I recently picked up a boxed-set for 8€ because I was interested in the recordings, just to find out the set goes for around 100€ usually. My favourite store also sells all their classical boxed-sets for 1.50€. I found so many great records there - it’s bliss.
