The trunk is for the trunk old cars used to have stuck up on the rear bumper back in the 1900's. Which was a wooden trunk. Hey, i know, at least it's better than chest. Imagine if you had to put your old car parts in the chest.

Long time fan with a question for you guys. The Manga bomb on the fender, is it vinyl wrap or is it actually pages like you guys did with the golf? I tried this on my hood/bonnet 3 times and all 3 times the pages curled up and half fell off. I couldn't get it to seal as one cohesive piece. Any tips? You guys are great! Be safe and take care!

10:59 also, one must not forget to clean their battery top as well. Grime can be conductive and on cars that sit, that's gonna kill the battery. Perhaps less occurring with every day vehicles, but trucks and more utilitarian stuff suffer from this as they get dusty and dirty much easier. I lost two big batteries on a truck before i figured it out, all it took was a careless oil drip on top, cleaned haphazardly and dust to build up.

I’d like to second Moog’s mentality of keeping cars with the perspective from a long time fan of their show, In my opinion, a car like Mod Max is an icon because of its story and it’s history, you simply can’t get rid of a car like mod max that would be like getting rid of super gramps, It’s such an integral part of the show from the perspective of a fan

My first licensed car I daily drove was a 99 Trans Am in '08 when I turned 16...you would think by the point of the LS series they would have a new fuel pump that doesn't get stuck or die if it sits for more than a week. The ratty '95 Celica I had at the time (that started my obsession with the ST204's) built as an amateur rally car I put together with bits and pieces laying around would have a better chance of starting up after sitting than any of my GM stuff. I left the TA at home when I went to college after someone shattered the rear hatch glass my first semester. Get back that summer, no dice zero sound from the fuel pump. Meanwhile the Celica fired up and I drove it to pick up a new pump and deal with the massive pain that is replacing a fuel pump in an fbody (dropping the tank and everything else in the way; I cut a proper access hole in the body after the tank was down to make the next swap easier).

In the states we call it the trunk cause on stagecoaches and early cars you would put your giant travel trunk/chest on the back. They were large and made of wood, metal and sometimes leather.
My parents still have the trunk off the back of my grandparents' car from the 1920s.

I was just thinking about the "hood" thing, it means "a cover" north america - a hood on your sweater or jacket covers your head, a hood over your stove catches the smoke and vents it outside, a hood over your tools keeps the sparks and dust down, and a hood over your car engine covers the engine - also a trunk can be a word for a container, normally a large container you would store clothes in, I think thats where car trunk gets its name
Back in the old days, the trunk of a car was literally a trunk (i.e. a suitcase) attached to the back of the car.

It is true what you say about protecting the car for next user and not enjoying it yourself. My father bought new car 1998 and the car dealer refused to sell him seat covers. He said, enjoy the lovely seats now and put covers when they are ruined if needed. Seats were completely fine after 20+ years and 350000km+ when the car went to the BIN. Enjoy your car especially if you plan to keep it longer than few years!

We call them "trunks" in the U.S. because some early cars had actual wooden trunks strapped to the back of the car for storage. Its legacy nomenclature.
in the netherlands we call the bonnet and trunk just "motorkap" and "achterklep". meaning literally "engine-cover" and "rear-cover". makes it a lot easier

Fun fact as to why us Americans call the back of the car a trunk. Over here trunk was a chest like box that carried items on the back of wagons and carriages when the first automobiles were made there was no storage space on them so people would strap their old trunks to the back of the car. And the term carried over for when auto makers did start manufacturing storage spaces built into the cars.

The trunk thing is because way back in the day cars had actual trunks attached to the back of them. The type of trunk you use to store clothes and things at your house.
That's why trunk is the better word, because people have been calling a large travel chest a trunk for over a thousand years, before an elephant's nose was even called a trunk.
Boot is an 18th century term referring to the, "Boot box" that stage coach drivers would sit on and store their boots, has nothing to do with cars.
In terms of Bonnet vs hood, they're equally not great names for it.

I think the bonnet/hood name probably comes from the first cars having a single large bonnet shaped covering for the engine. When it was removed from the vehicle and stood on the ground it probably resembled a hood or bonnet. Also I'd bet people have imagined the headlights as eyes for quite some time. That's probably helped bonnet/hood become the anthropomorphic name.
@@superkirk11 hood keeps water and grit off your head. Car hood keeps water and grot off your motor. It’s not that bad. A bonnet is also a thing people wore on their heads (I guess some do still), but most bonnets aren’t really as ubiquitous and effective at protecting heads as hoods. Especially not these days.

Trunk is from back in the horse and carriage days where there would be a wooden storage trunk bolted to the back of the carriage.
It's called a "trunk" because the on the first cars ever made in order to move your stuff around they would put an actual travel trunk on the back of the vehicle. Hence, the storage space in the back of the car is called a trunk.

It's a trunk because when cars were first comin around they had a rack on the back to put your luggage trunk. Then the box on the back was just referred to the trunk and so on. THAT makes sense!! lol

“Trunk” is a holdover from stage coaches or the horse and buggy era. They had lockable trunks strapped to the back of the buggies.
