Social media platforms have become hotbeds for disinformation, multiple forms of hate speech, and discrimination. Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram are silencing - especially those with the least power in the millions! Platforms are failing to stop this hate, in part because their algorithms are designed to amplify the most sensationalist content.
On June the 19th, 2023, ARTICLE 19, in partnership with UNESCO, launched a national coalition on freedom of expression and content moderation in Bosnia, established as part of the UNESCO project Social Media 4 Peace funded by the European Union. The coalition aims to encourage cooperation between civil society, state institutions, academic community and experts, the social media and digital platforms to improve the curbing of online harmful content while promoting freedom of expression in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It would provide social media platforms with a one-stop shop where they could easily hear the concerns of local civil society. And it would give a voice to local civil society actors affected by disinformation speech that incites discrimination, and content-moderation decisions that overlook the local context.
