  • In June 2014 the Coney Island History Project answered the City's RFP and took ownership of the storm-damaged Astroland Rocket. The iconic Rocket was returned to Coney Island and found a new home at Denos Wonder Wheel Park. A film by Charles Denson

Awesome!!! It broke my heart seeing it abandoned in that lot! I’m so happy they spotted it, and took it back where it belongs! Great job!! I remember seeing it in Astroland in the mid 70s when I was 5!

Great video! A blast from the past! Thank God the owner of WonderWheel found it and payed alot to truck it back. Think of all the thousands of people that sat inside over the decades. Amazing. Great riggers and haulers.

My first job was in Steeplechase Park in Coney Island.
Was not aware of the history being the rocket. Living there seeing their fireworks every Friday night riding all the rides in Coney Island I kind of took everything for granted eating in the original Nathan's.

My first job ever was as a ride attendant at DENO'S kiddie park, and so I'm in a position to say that the Vourderis family are very good people and dedicated to Coney. The rocket was sorely missed on top of Gregory & Pauls, but I had no idea that the seats and decor were still inside! Now to get it functioning and have it turn a profit as one of the resort's iconic landmark attractions. With the parachute tower being next. And how I wish they could have saved the old Astro Tower too, also sorely missed. There is no place on earth like Coney Island, nostalgia is everywhere. At least for now.

@eyescrynot totally agree! not many things from Astroland still exist. Someone has a few parts from Dante's Inferno (the dark ride) on CZcams. At least the parts from that ride are still around to this day, gives me hope more Astroland stuff is still on this planet and not thrown away.

I first saw the rocket as a kid on July 4th 1962 when my parents first took me and my brother to Coney Island the rocket back then was Silver and it sat in Astroland Park next to the space man.

Is it a WORKING UNIT? Or can we even get inside it for a price to just look at it??

There is one of these in storage at Canobie Lake Park but hasn't worked since the 90's. I'd love to find a copy of the film that played inside, but I am thinking it was some weird format because of the round plastic screen.
