  • I am BACK with another video on our CZcams Channel featuring the all-new 2021 W223 S-Class in onyx black metallic with the 2017 S-Class in emerald green! 😍
In this video, we will be having a walk around showing you the Exterior and Interior changes of the all-new Mercedes Benz S500 AMG Line & will also compare it to the old W222 iconic S560 AMG Line where we will show you the old vs. new S-Class Drive, the Old Vs. New S-Class Interior & the start up.😜
The S-Class stands for the fascination of Mercedes-Benz: legendary and traditional engineering expertise defines the luxury segment in the automobile industry. The new S-Class can be experienced with all the senses - seeing, feeling, hearing and smelling - while offering numerous innovations in the areas of driver assistance, protection and interaction. Mercedes-Benz is shaping the next generation of individual mobility for our times with innovations that place the focus on people. The new S-Class uses digitisation for a car that responds empathetically to the needs and wishes of its driver and passengers.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class follows a long tradition that extends back to the beginnings of the Mercedes brand in the early 20th Century. With the experience gained from 135 years of automobile engineering, Mercedes-Benz produces vehicles that take care of their occupants' safety and offers a comprehensive luxury experience that leaves owners more time for the important things in life. Each model has decisively influenced the automotive engineering of its era. Well before the official designation S-Class, the models in the executive and luxury class were the mainstay of the Stuttgart-based company's portfolio and have always stood for luxury, comfort, safety and lifestyle. The continuous ancestry of the S-Class begins with the model 220 (W 187) of 1951.
What do you think about the 2021 W223 S500 AMG Line? Would you go for the New or Old one? What should we compare next?

Having owned the previous S class and now the new one (only 3000 km so far) I have observed the following:
Exterior: New doors are heavier and harder to open. Body panels are not aluminum like the last one.
Interior: Both are very much quality cabins. The new one is more technology oriented and the previous was more about aesthetics. The new one is quieter than the old one. Hard to imagine that it could be but it is.
Ride: The old one was great. The new one is even better. Road holding and smoothness are superior. Winter traction and stability is the same in both: excellent.
Fuel consumption: The mild hybrid of the new S is definitely more fuel efficient than the previous V8 without electric boost.
Performance: New S has more rapid acceleration due to the mild hybrid boost.
MBUX: I struggle with the voice command. It seems to have trouble with my hoarse voice. The boot up of system functions is faster with the new MBUX than the previous Command.

I don't mind the screens, I just want the climate control dials and volume knob to remain (at minimum). We are nowhere close to having full self driving cars, so removing basic things such as the climate control and volume knob is just dangerous. The least Mercedes could have done is to integrate the climate control dials into the display (as it is they are static and ever present) like Land Rover is doing with its Touch/Pivi Pro Duo systems

    Talking about smoothness:
My first S-Class was a 1973 W116 280SE that I bought for roughly €1500 equivalent back in 1994. Replacing my crappy 1971 Volvo 142 it just felt so smooth and luxurious! A few years later I got a 1986 W126 300SE and I thought that car was just so incredibly smooth!
That was my last S-Class since I went into E-class stationwagons (I got kids) but I have driven a W221 S500 and that was like "now they can't be any smoother", it's like you're floating around in this bubble totally isolated from the outside world.
I haven't even experienced the W222 but I'm sure it's even smoother than the W221. And now you're telling me that the W223 is at a total different level than the W222...

Let me tell you one thing which felt really weird: After I got out the old W222 S-Class & got inside the new W223 to drive back home it felt like I was driving an old E-Class before. This is something I will probably never experience again but still feels a bit wrong when I think about it. 😅

When comparing different Mercedes models, the specs also makes a huge difference, sometimes even more so than one or even two generation steps. Especially for the E-class where the 4-cyl cars lack that luxurious effortless power compared to the 6 or 8 cyl cars. And without options the interior often look very basic whereas a fully speced car with airmatic and a nice leather option can feel almost like an S-Class.
But then again, the fully optioned E-Class e.g. E400d is more than double the price of a more basic speced E220d so maybe that's what to expect. But you should keep that in mind when watching those CZcams reviews where the car is often fully loaded. You may get disappointed when you go to the dealer and look at a car that is within your budget...
But when it comes to newer S-Class cars, the basic level (in terms of engine option and equipment) is very high, its not like twenty years ago when you could buy a very basic W140 S300 with cloth interior that felt more like a giant W124.

Very interesting comparison, Mr. Benz. I did the same, but it took a very long time, of course. Comparing the two was one of the hardest (and most fun) things I have ever done...in this area of being a Mercedes-Benz fangirl. To put it shortly, the new one won. That does not mean I hate the old one. In fact, if someone pointed a gun to my head and told me to buy whichever one they wanted me to buy, I would not be mad at whatever they picked.
I can fully explain how I compared each, but that would be too long, lol. No way I can cram it here. A three-hour video will probably cover most of it or at least some. Also, in a few years, the new one will be more loved than it is now. I remember when the previous one came out... Even the E-Class and C-Class.
There is so much progressions W223 has in the automotive industry. I am blown away. Truly a marvel. Truly a benchmark. People will get use to it, and people who understand it know what I mean about it being a benchmark. I am just very impressed.
One of my (kind of) fears when getting closer to experiencing W223 was that the pure driving experience was going to be lost in all the other stuff the car has. I had this fear with the previous one back in the day. What I like with Mercedes-Benz is that their cars, even with all this awesome fluff in them, is that they still drive so well. Not asking for a sports car, but just asking for an uninterrupted drive when I need it. W222 did it to great succession. W223 also did it with great succession. That feeling of "everything is at your fingertips...when you want it" is great. From the great comfort features to the wafting power when moving. It is all there, but I am not punished for not using them from time to time. That is a rare thing for a car to do well (to my satisfaction), and Mercedes-Benz does that thing well. Perfectly.
There is an """issue""" I have with W223. It is hard to explain, but essentially the feeling of all my senses being pleasures is not done equally as like the GLS or W222. What my senses are: Seeing, feeling, hearing, and smelling. Not tasting. I am not licking the car. Ew. These senses are not equally satisfied as they typically are in other Mercedes-Benz cars, mainly due to the car having a screen as the main UI. Now, I am not against screens or digital climate controls. I see a lot of benefit from screens, however they do remove something from me. Here we go. Take for example: adjusting the volume and climate unit. These little actions alone equally pleasure all my senses mentioned (See, feel, hear, and smell). Seeing the beautiful buttons and rolling thing. Feeling the metal-like and crafted structures. Hearing the clicking when I control them, and how that clicking bounces off and absorbs into the solid and cozy interior. Smelling the fresh air coming from the vents. This last one is a bit more variable, and will not always come to play. However, the other senses are pleasured equally. Perfectly balanced...like all things should be. That is Mercedes-Benz to me since I was a wee little thing. With W223, this is unfortunately not the case. I did not particularly enjoy doing these things like adjusting the climate control or volume, BUT I did love looking at the results via the ambient lighting and speaker rolling out. I did not hear anything from the volume, and I heard that artificial sound from the speakers when adjusting the climate. The haptic feedback is nice, but it is needed...not wanted by me. This reminds me of when I touch the "Back" icon on my phone versus pressing the "Volume" buttons on my phone. I like the latter more. Also, the buttons all throughout the car sound different, further removing the balanced feeling I love from Mercedes-Benz. Press the buttons below the screen, then press the buttons on the steering wheel, then press the Idle Start/Stop button, then press the buttons to open and close the vents, then press the Lock and Unlock buttons on the door. They ALL sound different. The sense of balance is gone for me. There is also the sense of balance on just the architecture of the inside. In my opinion, it is very stunning, but I can see the sense of clashing. The S-Class Coupé also had this issue, so it is sad to see it return. The yacht-like effect they wanted to accomplish is awesome, but a few thing ruin it for me. I noticed while I was driving W223 that the central air vents reflect on the windscreen...like a lot. And the big head-up display box is a bit noticeable from where I was sitting. Also, the vents are not centered...just like in every modern car, but the difference is the car is sculpted to hide those imperfections. This S-Class hides things so well, except the vents not being central, and that is the fault of the screen. Also, I did run into one problem with W223 when using it, but maybe they will sort it out via an update.
That is pretty much it. Otherwise, I am love W223 so much, and considering *many* factors at play here, I would rather have it over W222. There is so much I love about W223 when talking about my senses. It pleasures my senses far better than W222 does, overall. Brilliant car. My dream car.
This is a very shortened version of my thoughts. I could go on forever, but I think I will leave it there. I am excited for the EQS. That will be the first electric car I drive! 🙂
