I absolutely agree on Miley being talented. I think her singing technique is probably decent at best and her tone is polarising, but even during the Hannah Montana days, I could tell she was a talented singer. Hopefully she is taking care of her voice (she sounds like a contralto now due to vocal cord issues). Also, her pitch seems good nowadays

Mariah has so many innate talents, but I think her greatest gift vocally is the versatility of her tone and the fact that every part of her voice, every vocal areas is extremely interesting, pleasant and different from another. She can still sing divinely with a rested voice but if we talk about her prime: her lower register was extremely rich, deep and dark, her midbelts strong and resonant ( especially 90-93 and after her prime) , her upperbelts clean, bright, lighter and inhumanly resonant ( the resonance is a constant in her voice in every register) her headvoice gorgeous and angelic, flexible, her whistle register .... I don't have to say anything, she can change the textures just like with her headvoice and then her legendary unmatched airy falsetto. Even her rapping voice in Prisoner was so interesting and different.
Besides the difficulty of her songs, and arrangements impossible to replicate I think this is the main reason why anyone trying to sing her songs sounds basic, common or like a karaoke singer in comparison. It's as if every tone sounded ugly in comparison because no one can hold its own against all the different textures and the sweetness in her voice.

Whitney is right: you can't sing soul and blues if you did not come through pain. Etta, Billie, Ella, Aretha, Christina, Mariah had painful past lives, and used music as a salvation. I don't see much soul in Ariana, Jojo, Jessie and Torri. great singers but they try to be soulful, while you should not. Singing complex runs and riffs does not mean you have the soul and the blues, means just that you are gifted. And not every sound (tone) of the voice is made to sing that masterpiece of music styles. Very nice explanation of the case of Jessica and Fergie. Your argument is on point.

Anybody can sing, not everyone can be a true vocalist. There is a difference. Whitney and Mariah had something you couldn’t teach. Those golden pipes define a whole ERA. Without them, you wouldn’t even have these other female singers because labels wouldn’t be looking for them. There wouldn’t be any inspiration. That’s just the fact. It’s not to downplay anyone else but it’s telling the truth. People got on Whitney during her last days because her vocals weren’t the same at a concert and ppl still judge Mariah because she don’t sound the same but nobody can do a simple vocal warm up owned by Whitney or Mariah in a perfect tone. They earned their status by using their voice and their voice only, they didn’t have to do anything else because that was the moneymaker and years later they are the biggest influences for these singers. Another thing is, Beyoncé has worked hard to earn her respect too. A lot of ppl wanted her to be great but didn’t want her to get that far. When she started breaking records and started making history, then she was looked at as a threat. She deserves her recognition. She worked hard and should enjoy her rewards. She one of the greatest entertainers ever. She got her validation from all the greats. Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Aretha, Patti, Michael , Prince( who is not easily impressed) , Barbara, Bono, Stevie, Steven Tyler etc all gave her that respect because it’s true . Don’t take that away from her and y’all can’t. She’s going in the book 🤷🏽‍♀️

People don't realize how much work it takes to sing gospel. Alot of great singers come out of the church: Whitney, Aretha, Patti, Sarah Vaughan, Leontyne Price, etc. Alot of these great singers come out of the church. I love how you incorporated videos of these singers as teenagers. I love watching videos like that. I remember I watched a video of destiny child audition and Kelly's range blew me away. Personally I believe, because she is an emotional singer-she sings mostly with emotion and not with a proper technique- people see her as not a good singer because she is only interested in emotions and the vibes in general. Of course there are singers that can do both-sing with emotion and proper technique- like Lara Fabian for example, but Lana in not interested in doing that, she just wants the singing to be as raw as it can possibly be and that differentiates her from everybody else. Nonetheless I think you made very good points, that's just my personal opinion.

In regards of Jessica Simpson she actually wanted to sing Gospel but they said her boobs were too big and then Mottolla (same jerk Mariah Carey divorced after he threaten her career while holding a knife to her face) Jessica hated the image they were building for her. She was still a virgin yet they made her seem like a info because they wanted a Britney, one of the reasons Jessica resents 5he music industry so much and why she left, she never caught a break and be the singer she wanted to be. I think it’s worth noting that talent and work are often concurrent. The most talented often built on their seed from a young age. With Mariah Carey, she learned at a very young age to produce the sounds that were available to her while her voice was tired in a musical way. Were it not for listening to Minnie Riperton and toying around with that portion of her voice from very young, she would not be Mariah Carey. Indeed ILAF’s Explained video on her also expresses that she is likely a natural middle voice (hence her speech) that likes to sing high. That explains the changes of larynx position and resonance evident in her voice from high to low, as well as why her voice is so resounding yet variable in the middle. To put alongside her, take Maria Callas. Were it not for her early training by Elvira de Hidalgo, and her understanding that the voice can and must take on multiple colors and characters, she would not have been Maria Callas.

What are you guys talking about?, Beyoncé was always a natural talent, this woman surprised her teacher at 5/6 years old by supporting a hard note, better than the original singer of the song (no training), then surprised her first vocal coach , when hearing B for the first time, said that he didn't understand how a child without training, has a better technique than all adult professional singers he trained, this woman was a vocal arrange child AT 10\11\12, she always had great vocal knowledge and great vocals (but only being member of a group, couldn't show it much), in 2002 she put Celine Dion to shame live.

Honestly this makes me feel so much better as a singer. As a kid growing up in church I’d sing like it was nothing and I remember sounding pretty good to myself. But puberty SNATCHED my voice. I had no access to a higher register and my voice cracked consistently. The recovery from that took me years and I’m still not where I want to be vocally. It’s very depressing Bc I feel like being a singer defines my life in a way and to not do it in the way that I want or like how the ppl I look up to do it is very disheartening. But this just made me feel good about where I am in life, especially Ari Lennox saying that her voice didn’t fully develop until her 20’s. Because ppl believe that you have to have everything figured out young. And Kelly Clarkson, one of the best voices, lost her voice during her pregnancy and she talked about how sad it was for her. I say all this to say the voice is a very interesting thing. It is a muscle that can be trained to get better and we shouldn’t always compare ourselves to big name ppl and expect to feel good. Along w that big name ppl also deal w vocal issues. We’re all human. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

Then we have God-given talents like Whitney and Mariah who are in a whole different level.

Madonna is not strong vocally of course but her voice is really sweet. Her songs are not easy to re-create though. I've heard lots of young powerful vocalists trying to sing her Frozen, Like a Prayer, Papa Don't Preach, Ray of Light....most of them sucked big time. It speaks by itself. There's something special about her voice too plus do you know many powerful vocalists who released Broadway albums or Jazz albums? Madonna did that.

Some of what you're calling still singing is actually more jazz singing, although in some of that there are different similarities. You can sing jazz songs with a kit if still. Some of the best jazz singers in the early times if jazz were very soulful singers. I loved soul, r&b AND jazz standards growing up in the 70s, and 80s. When I sang in bands in my young adult years, I was always told I had raw talent. I still sang all off the time until I was assaulted in 2018 to the point that I was in the ICU on an intubator to keep me breathing, not even knowing yet what has happened to be while I was sleeping, and that time down by throat really hurt my vocal folds, probably permanently, and I will never be able to have surgery because it's too expensive. I'm hoping I can learn to get some of my stamina and power back with the scarring in there, but I don't have a lot of hope about it. Pretty depressing when it's the one thing you loved to do more then anything else. I'm still sitting everyday for fun, but I get really hoarse fast now. Just taking all day with people on the phone wears my voice out. Sux.
