i like how mariah and patti never hold back when they're complimenting someone. i feel like a lot of legends in the industry kind of feel obligated to be modest and restrained when complimenting other artists, which i can understand, but it is refreshing to hear mariah and patti just say sweet things like "she's incredible!" "she's really really good, i love her" must really make an artist's entire year hearing something like that from those two

Normani really does have a lovely voice though that is so underrated and overlooked. Very smooth and velvety texture that is capable of doing intricate runs in her head voice and falsetto. Just wish she would get more comfortable with her belting.

I will never bash Mariah for the declination of her vocal abilities. She literally sacrificed her voice for her fans by giving us more and more, even at times when she had nothing left to give, and the incredible amount of damage it caused to her vocal chords is undeniable, but she's still an icon and deserves to be viewed as one of the greatest vocalists of all time, nonetheless. Regardless, nothing can invalidate her and she'll always be known for that five octave range, her songwriting ability, her 19 number one hits, her 30+ year-long career, etc, etc, and despite all the edge in her present-day voice, I still enjoy listening to her and always will.
People don't understand art. Of course Mariah damaged her voice by doing the insane things that she did with it, but she's gonna be remembered forever. In the same way Maria Callas, who is also criticized for "ruining her voice" is now remembered as a vocal TITAN; considerably above all the other sopranos who "took care of their instrument" and "lasted longer", but are not on anybody's minds nowadays. Mariah used her instrument in extreme ways, but she will always be remembered as a vocal titan, even if she lost her voice entirely tomorrow.

To be honest, I have never understood why Tori Kelly is regarded as an amazing vocalist. She can sing well, but I've never heard anything that has truly wowed me. I will never bash Mariah for the declination of her vocal abilities. She literally sacrificed her voice for her fans by giving us more and more, even at times when she had nothing left to give, and the incredible amount of damage it caused to her vocal chords is undeniable, but she's still an icon and deserves to be viewed as one of the greatest vocalists of all time, nonetheless. Regardless, nothing can invalidate her and she'll always be known for that five octave range, her songwriting ability, her 19 number one hits, her 30+ year-long career, etc, etc, and despite all the edge in her present-day voice, I still enjoy listening to her and always will.

I appreciate you ending on @MariahCarey in a 'relaxed moment' that shows her technicality and how she hasn't lost a damn thing, and anyone who thinks she has is smoking something. That woman has only gotten greater with time, because as we listen to her at 50, we're hearing (if you really listen) to the many ways that she has learned to use her voice to/for different effects. No-one can do it like she does. She has a new school coming up to try to follow in her footsteps, but there are few through time who carry the mantle that she does, and has taught to few in Gen Z. You wouldn't be wrong for calling her the last of The Greats, because we are in a different age now, where we no longer have an enduring legacy beyond her. Kelly Clarkson, and I guess you could say Beyonce, will be the next, but as far as I'm concerned, there has yet to be a Queen since Mariah. We have a host of princesses, but definitely no queen since her.
