- After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.

@6:20. there's no way they were allowed to use the skunkworks logo like this even though it's hidden and secretive without it being known to skunkworks. Makes you wonder...
I admittedly teared up when he called to his long dead friend.
"Talk to me, Goose."
Cheesy as fuck
I reckon goose is the one that helped push him that lil bit further to reach Mach 10. ;)
Same. It's such a beautiful little moment. Cruise acts so well in this movie.
Thats why she cheated Glenn.
I think the only time Maverick feels close to Goose is when he's pushing himself close to the edge of life and death. He says it again before the mission and talks to Goose again when the SU-57 has radar lock and they can't eject. It's a beautiful and emotional way to show the guilt and loneliness he carries.

In 1966, an SR-71 suffered a mid-air breakup when, like the Darkstar, flew to its full potential. The pilot survived, but his Recon Systems Officer was killed immediately during the breakup. I believe the incident inspired the Darkstar's flight and mid-air breakup in Top Gun: Maverick.
The Dark Star "Engine Unstart" is almost exactly as Bill Weaver described his high-altitude Mach 3+ breakup in the SR-71 (Serial # 61-7952) on the 25th Jan 1966. Bill survived that incident, crediting his Pressure shut for withstanding the incredible pressures of the breakup, forces that ripped him our of his ejection seat (which never left the aircraft) then protected him from death as he fell from above the death zone into breathable air. Bill survived but Jim Zwayer his RSO died. Bill passed away in 2021, having continued as a test pilot in some form or another, into his 85th year!

no shit sherlock, bro youre literally reading the smallest detail even a mentally disable person can see.
That is subtle to you?
The rising transition of Maverick screaming at the machmeter to the pure brutality of the scram jet gives me chills. 5:38
I love that word "brutality" to describe stuff like this. You can use aerodynamics and fancy technology all you want, but once you're pushing hypersonic speeds, you need a beast of an engine to power your plane. Seeing an engine like that in action would be nothing short of incredible.
Masterful editing and sound design during this scene!!!
4:10 see this part in the theater gave me the craziest chills ill ever have. Truly amazing scene.
For me the climbing engine sound at 05:29 and reaching Mach 9.9. Felt like some major sh*t was gonna happen. Relive at Mach 10 but then Mav had to push a little more.

@6:20. there's no way they were allowed to use the skunkworks logo like this even though it's hidden and secretive without it being known to skunkworks. Makes you wonder...
What I love about this scene, apart from how heartfelt and exciting as it is, is that Lockheed-Martin has their name all over the Darkstar. As soon as I saw the Skunk, I was excited. It's like, if this is what LM is willing to put their name all over and share with the world from their own drawing boards, it makes you wonder just what it is they're REALLY working on.
I feel like an idiot for not realizing this when watching, I just thought it looked heavily inspired by the SR-71 and thought they did a good job making it look more modern, but I just looked it up and you're right 😅 Lockheed Martin and the Skunk Works division literally designed and built the full scale mockup used in filming

I like how this movie basically gave the big middle finger to China. They wanted the directors to edit some things out for it to be released in China. And they basically said no... So now it's not allowed in China
Almost. They actually did katow to China in post production. One of the 1st trailers had the Taiwanese flag on Mavs jacket removed. After covid hit, and China started to backpedal on letting hwood movies in, they pulled financing from Maverick. At that point, the filmmakers put the flag back in. But they absolutely let China dictate some things early on. A great book just came out on how much power China wields in hwood. Its called Red Carpet. Written by a WSJ reporter.
@@kingofswing3000 gonna look into that book, thx 👍
@@kingofswing3000 I will have to check that out. Either way it's not allowed in China. I think this movie is setting precedents that they do not need to bend over for China anymore. Hollywood is learning that they can still do incredibly well, it made billions of dollars without the Chinese market. This movie shows that. It did incredibly well. And to this day it is absolutely smashing records still. I mean it did well enough that it caused the Chinese version of Top Gun to not be released they were afraid of it being ridiculed from what I heard. And with the way current relations are going with China, what you're saying is not really going to matter anymore, because things have deteriorated so much anyway. So the days of relying on China are coming to an end. Currently the US and Canada are working together to ban some exports to China. And it looks like some of them have just been approved. China collects a huge number of natural resources and semiconductors that it needs from North America.

You gotta admit, Ed Harris not flenching was pretty badass in of itself
God I wonder what it feels like to fly like that… It looks so peaceful
its not
It'll take nerves of steel to even fly that thing. The X-15, the current fastest manned aircraft although reaching Mach 6.7 was already stressful enough to fly because the faster you are, the harder it is to control your flight path. One wrong move and you'll be up in flames. However, flight isn't the most dangerous part of the mission, getting back on the ground is.

I can totally see them re releasing it in theatres like they did with some other movies. It was truly an amazing experience from start to finish.
@@trentpatrick7530 I agree it will likely be released as one of the "classics" from time to time. As a fighter pilot myself always going to these types of movies and like military or war movies in general with a precaution because a lot of the times some of the stuff you might see is fake or even half of it but I can tell you from personal experience that throughout the entire day of the scene and even the movie I sat in my seat in the theatre with a childlike grin on my face because it was accurate and captured the feeling of not only how I feels to be in the air but also the freedom you have when you up there as close as you can get to God
Nah bro you can literally see god when you dive in a sub and the play station controller stops working
As a pilot I love Maverick’s communication with ATC (or ‘tower’ or whatever they’d be called here). He tells them he has the current weather (“with information Alpha”) and flight control clears him to taxi to the runway that most favors the weather, then reads to Maverick the wind direction and windspeed (210 is the direction of the wind, 10 is the sustained windspeed in knots). I saw the movie seven times in theatres and seen clips on CZcams dozens of times, that first time watching it on opening day in late May 2022 was the greatest cinematic experience of my life! Little details like these made it special.
That skunk always means business lol
In my opinion, this is the most breathtaking part of the movie! Beautiful shots. Beautiful music. I got chills the first time I watched it. Reminds me of Interstellar. Amazing movie. There is no green screen and the use of CGI is minimal. Many of the stunts may look like CGI, but they are real. That's why this movie is so amazing.
Actually there was green screen when they we're showing Tom Cruise flying in the sky with the Darkstar (Cockpit Shot). The real shots of the darkstar was when Tom Cruise entered the plane and when they were pulling it out of the hangar the rest was CGI for the Darkstar takeoff and flight (F/A-18 Disguised as a Darkstar via CGI during Takeoff) But the Darkstar flight shots were all CGI. Saying "there is no green screen" is misinformation there no offense.
@@darkstar_sierra1588 None taken, but thanks for providing accurate information. :)
This movie had nearly 2,500 VFX shots. This entire sequence with the dark star is almost fully CG. They created a practical mock-up of for the on-ground scenes, however, all the flying is 100% CG.
Most of the flying scenes in this movie were in fact heavily heavily altered by CG. The enemy planes are all CG, the F 14 escape plane is all CG, the actual planes used for shooting were mostly L 39's, and then later digitally replaced.
The only flying scene that's assured to be not CG is the P51 Mustang scene with the Lady Gaga song at the end of the film.
Hollywood marketing campaigns will have you beleive otherwise, but this movie is hardly a "Minimal CG" movie.

that shot of Maverick above the earth with a birds eye view shot gives me goosebumps everytime.
I love the character he plays. “One last ride.” he says with contentment as he lays his life on the line. There’s something beautiful about risking it all on the man you’ve spent your life becoming. Pushing a boundary you don’t know if you’ll survive to stay true to who you are, knowing that if you die, you died as the best version of yourself. The version who’s will does not bend for anyone. Not for man, or beast, or nature, or even God. Let’s all be more like Maverick.
