  • In England, the local authority have a duty to carry out a care needs assessment for social care if you need help and support with everyday tasks like cooking, washing, or dressing. The care needs assessment also gives you the opportunity to explain what care and support you feel you need to make your life easier, and to enable you to live as independently as possible.
In this video, I explain what’s involved in the care needs assessment and what happens at the end.

Hi Justin , I hope you're well . Could you please tell me how long it takes to find appropriate accommodation after the care assessment is done. Global band need 6 24-hour supported accommodation/ rehabilitation for mental health / autism. Thank you 😊

Hi Dan , I’m afraid I dont know the answer to that. It may be dependent on your local authority.

I am a full time registered Carer for my 19 year old daughter who has learning disabilities, she lives with us mum dad and brother ,her doctor is insisting she has a right to a social care needs assessment but my daughter understands that I am her Carer and she tells me she does not want another Carer coming in to look after her . I feel her wishes shouid be respected as I enjoy looking after my daughter and having other carers coming in to do what I’m already doing will cause her stress and anxiety and can trigger her epilepsy seizures.
She only has pip and if that is taken into account then she won’t have much left to live on from the mobility part .

If your daughter had an assessment this doesn’t necessarily mean support would be arranged, it’s only at that point that a financial assessment would be needed. The threshold for contributing to social care is quite high in the community (not care homes) being many thousands in savings or an income of over £100 per week and even then is a sliding scale. Please don’t let potential charges put you off for the reasons set out above. Have a good conversation with the local authority about the pros and cons. Their website will likely set out their financial charging policy and other key information. Hope that helps.

Please stop calling it a care needs assessment, that language is 10 years out of date and brings into doubt your understanding.
