Explore the unique features and hidden details of my craziest custom bike, the Stinner Refugio. Learn from my experience as I reveal the one major mistake I made during the build and how you can avoid it in your own custom bike projects. - Sport
I will very likely never ride a gravel bike, but I’m hooked on this channel and have subscribed. 🤷♂️
This makes my day!!
Natas!!! One of the most influential street skaters to exist, love that dude and he is super chill too. To be mentioned in the same breath as him then get the nod over him is definitely a huge compliment especially when it comes to art style.
Couldn't agree more!
SKS have some fenders (e.g. Raceblade and Speedrocker) you can attach to the fork and seat stays. This should solve your problem, unless you insist on fenders that get screwed onto the frame :)
I like the _SKS Raceblade Pro XL_ fenders for "road" bikes. They're the totally adjustable clip-on type, but I think they only work w/ up to ~32mm tires.
Topeak tetra fender G1 an G2 650b/700c 32-50mm compatible
@@MoonMoon-rm2vg ahh ha! And available from Competitive Cyclist (how convenient)
@@malcontent510 happy to help 🙂👍
I can confirm these are awesome they make a gravel specific type that I've been using for three years! They're also very easy to take on and off!
I saw Ron going into Whole Foods the other day. Those tubers never saw it coming.
Oh, and custom bikes are cool, but I don't want to afford.
LMAO
The fact that you went ahead and painted the pump to match shows a commendable amount of dedication on your part. Or that you just had too much free time on your hands. 😁
Just waiting for the bus
Omg imagine that bike with matching paint job on fenders, woah😮
Please stop! Even the wheels are a step toooo far
Made the same mistake, but Ass Savers did what they advertise. Still amazed how they work so fricken well, and I can take them off and put them on in 20 seconds. 11/10 product, and it comes in funky colorways!
I appreciate the video and the acceptance that sometimes we won’t think of every little thing. And that’s okay. I absolutely love my Stinner. Beautiful color, steel, rack mounts, fender mounts, and S&S couplers…but the small thing I wish I had added was cable stops so I can use the breakaway cable thingies. It would make travel just a bit easier for me.
I had no idea you started cadence! Your whole stylistic ethos makes more sense. ❤
This makes my day!
P-clamps from the plumbing section of the hardware store. You can mount your fenders any which way you want. It's ghetto but highly effective.
This bike and the design creativity behind it has to be the epitome of the beautiful bicycle equation: n+1
Discuss.
It's beautiful!!! That's some pretty tight gearing, I have a 2016 CX bike that came with similar. Tyre clearance is also and will be forever limited but now run a 46/34 front with an 11-42 cassette and SRAM GX long cage RD. Love your work!!
Thoughts on Custom Bikes?
Great if one has the budget, but not so great if you don't know what geo numbers you want & what geo numbers don't work.
I'm really leggy, and even though I'm a slowpoke I really like to ride. Custom geometry is the only way I can get a road or gravel bike that doesn't have me bent over with my arms outstretched like a T-Rex getting the old stop-and-frisk, so I finally bit the rather expensive bullet and got a custom frame built for me by Jeremy Sycip.
It's glorious.
I contemplated it, but ultimately went with the Titanium Fargo. They thought of things I wouldn't have and I just love it.
Very cool and help with peoples fit. That does mean people should do a bike fit first before ordering the custom. As the saying goes, measure twice, cut once
I'm just starting this process now. Surly MS, grx 600 1x12, dt swiss gr1600, fizik argo saddle(your sugg tyvm), and a bunch of redshift comfort stuff up top too. Leaving susp stem till last to optimize fit. It's daunting. I'm lucky I work(ed), soon to be laid off, in a LBS and get to pick mechanics brains. If it weren't for that, I'd buy off the rack
I love my Stinner! Done 6 double century rides on it in the past year and it’s so comfortable and fast. Great brand, perfect bikes, and wonderful paint jobs.
You are an animal!!
As others have said, there are at least a couple decent fenders out there that don't require mounts. I have SKS Speedrockers and they are pretty bulletproof. I can't solve you tire clearance issue though 🙃
You don't have to have _attachment points_ for mudguards....just get stick-on/velocro ones.....I have the _Crud Roadracer MK3_ mudguards - a small firm in the UK does them probably for gravel/mountain bikes too.....they are awesome....stayed on all last winter.
Your artistic skills are off the charts.
Love this, what a cool bike and story! I don't know much about fenders (in Colorado here, doesn't rain much!) but I would assume there are a lot of aftermarket awesome fenders that don't require built-in frame attachments? I've seen some - especially on the rear - that look like they do an adequate job. Thanks, again, WOW, titanium what a cool bike!
You can make your own from fiberglass, it's not easy and messy, also the finishing part consists of sanding epoxy for hours.
Fun 😂
In Colorado as well. It might no rain much, but with snow from Early Oct to late April (sometimes longer), slush and snowmelt are common throughout this long season. I love my bolt on metal fenders for this reason. 😊
Whoa!!! NATAS is such a legend. Though, I thing Aaron made the right decision building you a bike
Yup. Ordered my dream bike last year with mudguards, never took them off. Final touch: There are two sets of 5mm spacers between the frame and mudguards, so i can use 35/40/45mm tires ,and mudguards will still fit perfectly just by adding or removing spacers.
I remember Natas having an Ant bike built for him back when Mike Flannigan was building bikes outside of his school, maybe he still is, and that was a super sweet bike. Worth looking up if you're interested.
Dope bike bro‼️ Custom‼️
You rule Teve!
Always loved this bike and its great to hear a good tale about it!! :)
Thanks brother!
Sweet bike AF 🔥
@dustin your brick work came together nicely
This is the comment I’ve been looking for 🤜❤️🤛
Just got a new steel endurance bike. Can’t wait to see how it looks after 8 years of riding it 😎
If you are frequently bleeding brakes you have the wrong fluid or a leak somewhere. This guy should be proud he hasn’t bled his brakes.
Beautiful
Love the Forest Park/Skyline footage. Horrified to see bamboo - invasive isn’t a strong enough word. It’s worse than the ivy in the park, which was brought by people.
Great hannel & love your content
Such a sick bike 🖤
Since is titanium frame and not carbon you can still drill the frame for fenders
The fork is the easy part coz out there is a bunch of options for fenders that not nearly need mounts .
Wow… you’ve been rolling a Ti bike on us and we never knew 😅🤯. Secrets revealed!
Great channel

Hey,nice bike! Just noticed you’re running sram force 22 crankset -whats the bb are you using? Asking as building a gravel bike with same cranks and a threaded bb shell …thank you!
Cool bike. Customs are great. I've had three. But, probably no more. They've gotten fashionable and uber expensive here in Oz.
I have a custom titanium bike from Waltly that I built last year. No rack or fender mounts, bu that's okay for me since I only ever planned for it to be a good weather endurance road bike, so it never gets ridden in bad weather. That's what my steel gravel/commuter bike is for.
I think it was in complete steez form when ya had the nanos on there 👌
SKS Speedrockers are your friend. They work really really well and don't require mounts.
Wtf, hand painted 🧠💥
And that Natas one up is so cool.
You the man.🤙
Steel in my waking hours but titanium in my dreams. Someday that dream will come true.
I have an SKS fender set made just for disc brake bikes and it's amazing, it just velcros on and off as needed. It's saved my ass (literally) through these rainy Portland weeks we've been having recently. Perhaps your solution for this excellent bike??
I guess Grant Petersen was ahead of the curve on this one. In 2005, 10+ years before your Stinner, Rivendell introduced a production frame named the A. Homer Hilsen, with room for up to 700x40mm tires, or 38mm with fenders. (They've since upped that clearance even more) It has road-ish geometry not too different from modern gravel bikes, lugs that are pretty and unique, and useful braze-ons, including those for racks and fenders. No disc brakes and definitely not titanium though.
It should fit a Win Wing rear gravel fender.
Bike Mechanic Nick from the Cade Media youtube channel doesn't like fenders because they accumulate grime and make the bike harder to clean. He instead recommends fenders that strap onto your fork and seat stays like the ones made by Ass Savers. They could totally work for your bike.
Natas! Childhood hero 😍
Beautiful bike! I regret not getting a Ti frame when I got a custom bike. Maybe add fender mounts now?
Definitely my favorite bike in the stable. Tastefully customized. When are you gonna start selling invisible kickstands. DK logo just floating in the air on it.
Ordered a custom bike here. Pretty identical in specs to yours, except steel and 1x. My mistake? No fender mounts. I’ve since acquired a higher end bike so my custom steel one was relegated to commuting and bad weather duties. I ended up mounting fenders using rubber/metal hose clamps. Not the prettiest solution but it works well. I can send you some pics if you want.
We did the same thing!
At least we are still able to ride them.
That is a spicy hot cool cruiser! Never would hsve guessed it was Ti but I did nail it on the missing fenders! Must be some sort of fenderish thing you can squeeze onto it. If Suzanne Somers csn squeeze a Thigh Master you can squeeze some sky pee protectors!
Slap a some 45s and a 1x on it. Have Stinner add fender mounts. QED!
Win Wing baby. It’ll be ok.👌
Totally into custom myself (Titanium and steel).
And yours is custom - just have the welder add some fender mounts and M5 threads. …and PLEASE no clip-on fenders if yer bike isn’t plastic 😢
SKS Bluemels and Polisport for the win👍
Costuming your bike is we’re it’s at. Customising means you just real love bikes.
what do you think about the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H tyres?
I have them setup with tubes on my allroad bike and i get a puncture like once a month.
Fenders or not, it's still a sweet ride.
dat bike doe🔥🔥🔥
portland design works makes the sodapop fenders that dont need mounts
Let's talk about the haircuts ! 😂
Have a local framebuilder braze them on? ENVE All Road Fork in the front. Yes it will need repainting, but that's right up your alley, no?
40 is perfect, anything bigger is a mountain bike tire. Change my mind.
Ok did you check and see if the glue on the patch kit has dried up? 😅.
Also no rack mounts.
D Klein, ever thought about doing something on common cycling injuries and remedies?
This is a cool subject. Ill see what I can come up with!
Always appreciate the suggestions
If you need medical advice, I‘ll gladly be of assistance
Already mentioned plenty times, I'm sure. SKS Speedrockers.
huge yes to custom framebuilders and titanium.
get yourself a pair of musguards
"A bike that tries to do everything well, does nothing well." Sounds like the track frame I made at UBI. Well at least it has room for fenders
Back in 2010 I custom ordered the most expensive bike I’ve ever had (even still with expensive full suspension bikes I have) - a Moots PsychloX. THIS was before hydro drop bar disc brakes were available, but I had them anyway. Back to that in a moment… Anyway, back in the era, mechanical road disc was becoming a thing (Avid BB5 and BB7 Rd) are the only two I can think of right now, but the rear hub spacing on road bikes was 130mm and mountain was 135mm. Somehow I decided that 135mm was better and had the bike built with that spacing as well as ensuring I had full fender braze-ons. This included the WoundUp TeamX carbon fork. So, to this day, I still have this bike and recently put it back on the road by removing the early MTB hydraulic brakes with 324Labs adapters to enable me to use any mechanical drop bar levers I wanted and just put on TRP Spyre calipers. I still have the SRAM Rival 2x10 drivetrain, fully sealed Nokon cable housing and other CX race specific parts (wickwerks 38/46t chainrings), but this weekend will probably put back on the original 34/50 chainrings because this gearing isn’t cutting it for climbing in Boulder. Tl;dr - I have a 14 year old gravel bike before gravel was a monetized term!
Speaking of tire size, the bike has 38c Marathon Supremes on it right now, so tire clearance is my only complaint with the bike. It’s limited at the chainstays behind the BB.
I haven't bled my SRAM force brakes since I got them 4 years ago. What could possible go wrong?
SPICY !🌶
Beauty Whip Amigo. Fenders? Meh....Ti, exquisite.
SKS Speedrocker fenders will save you from the mud and everything.
Even my custom 650b x3.0 custom Bantam AdventureBike was spec’d with fender mounts because who knows, right?
What were you thinking?!?
Can you make a Video in german? Greets from Saxony Dude✌🏻
Hope you doing well. And of course, the Stinner is legit!
Buy a made to measure frame, you can get custom carbon frames as well, your body will thank you for it.
I've been riding the 700x47 Specialized Pathfinder Pro tires. I'll never go back to a narrower tire.
Nice whip!! Clip on fenders would do the trick no?
I’m reluctant about the wear on the paint. 🤦🏻♂️
Would SKS Speedrocker fenders not work with that bike? They don't require mounts.
so did you fire up the VHS player and put on Sick Boyz and Wheels On Fire to show him who Natas was?
Sorry, but there were were electronic shifters back then. I have a Giant Propel from 2015 with a Di2 on it.
I just bought a Lynskey titanium gravel bike. Now I kinda want to paint it. 🤔
Paint it!!!!!
bring back the kit!
at least for the rear, throw on an AssSaver WinWing, you will be surprised how good it works
As a fellow hair cutter 🫡
We've all been there, man.
wait, it is metal so why don't you just drill some holes (with proper tools and supervision of course)?
This suggestion is logical. I’m embarrassed I hadn’t thought of it. 🤦🏻♂️
Kona had a 1x on their 2016 Sutra LTD. Just sayin'.
Just buy some sks speedrocker fenders (on/off in 2-3 min).
Heh, my - steel - gravel bike with 44s, the same pump and tools is 21.5 lbs. 853 FTW. Seriously though if it were carbon it would be 17 ish.
Let's be honest, Abbot Kinney is the Rodeo Drive of Venice Beach, with bums.
My version of a custom bike is buying a used one with a good reliable frame and slowly swapping everything out lol
Get somebody with a 3d printer to print you some mudguard frame clips
I use Ass savers fender. Not perfect, but they’ll do the job.
I had my custom bike made without fender mounts. I do ride it in the slop. The slop enters me. I become one with the slop.
Have you tried the Ass Saver Win Wing? It works really really well.
Fenders? Ain't nobody got time for that.
Still with cadence? My favorite windbreaker is cadence 💪🏽
I left back in 2016. And ended up starting this channel.
Dang - I thought I was the only guy who cuts his own hair...
SKS has fenders for bikes without fender bosses...
EPO?
The direction of the paint on the wheels doesn't match.
