Putting the US against other countries in terms of pop culture is like putting Japan against other countries in terms of anime
Other countries can produce pop culture they just don't.
@@liberalbias4462 my point still stands then
Anime is also pop culture.
And The title is about culture. I prefer UK culture.
â@@Yes-bn6yy UK has tons of pop culture, more.
@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek thatâs true! UK pop culture is cool. But the most famous country for pop culture is undoubtedly the US
I think it's an unfair question, because the US is a very diverse country, in music as well , there are many types of culture and music in the USA, very varied styles
Agree and i'm from neither of these two countries
The US has Latin American and African American culture as well. I notice how people outside the US tend to think the US is just white American culture an thatâs far from reality. More than half of the US is also European just an interesting fact.
@@DA-db9bi thats not true. I am not american and I only can remember black music and movies in american culture
@@mustachinhogrosso3535 thatâs good for you , but most people outside the US especially those in Europe think the US is just valley girl accents and people from Texas riding horses which is false.
@@mustachinhogrosso3535 Tell anybody outside the US to describe what they think of a typical American an everything they say will be related to white American culture FACTS.
The English girl saying that they have better music and she mentions rock. Where did rock originate from? Rock, jazz and the blues originated from the US, from African Americans.
Which is African more than US to be honest then, and it is true Britain in rock music is a lot better no band beats the Beatles for a start.
@@cpj93070 It is NOT African. You go back to Africa and you would never hear that type of music. It was invented in the US by AMERICANS. Why do people think that Americans are only white and if you are not white you are African not American? Itâs blatantly racist. You donât have to be white to be American. Let me guess European?
@@cpj93070 what do you mean itâs African more than the USA? Itâs still American because black Americans are an unique American ethnic group that can trace their lineage in America 11 or more generations. America is an immigrant nation so everyone has contributed to forming its culture since itâs âfoundingâ. Would you say samba is more African than Brazilian even though Afro Brazilians ( Afro Brazilians have been in Brazil just as long as Afro Americans have been in America) made it? It makes no sense and lacks so much logic and it seems like hating. British copied everything the USA does including our rock and jazz.
@@capeverdeanprincess4444 Don't you dare say about us Brits copying everything, your whole nation is based on copying, how many things you copied off my country?
Rock originated in the UK. The Rolling Stones are considered the first rock band and "I can't get no satisfaction" is considered the first rock song in music history. The US had Rock'n'Roll, but that's not Rock. Rock'n'Roll uses a different beat, influenced by blues music Rock music instead uses a typical European beat. The Stones and the Kinks brought Rock music to the US, where it was immediately copied by other artists.
Something I really find annoying about the US is,that they tend to believe they invented everything. Like so many people in the US think the car was invented in the US.
Rock comes from America
Just like Dr Strange and Spider-man's actors , Henry Cavill aka Superman is british as well , but they are more famous for their US movies
â@@saxon..falkenhayn2908 UK and USA dominate the world, culturally.
Though the world will never appreciate it lmfao
I hate the Brits yet I must say that without those guys there would be no iconic characters like these
So doesn't matter if is an American film or not without those actors it would have been....đđ
@@KarmaKraftttt any reason why you hate the brits or just racism?
@@KarmaKraftttt hate is a pretty strong word lol how can you get a whole group of people who most likely havenât done anything to you or donât even know you pal
The actors are british but the stories and subject matter is all american. LMFAOOOO
I think there is no culture which is best or worst, every culture has their own beauty and traditions which are best for their followers
What is âbetterâ is subjective but American music is a lot more diverse than Lauren realizes. We listen to Blues, R&B, Jazz, Country, Broadway, Bluegrass and much more. Actually a lot of genres including rock originated in the USA with black people. IDK why she is claiming rock as being British? American culture is heavily African influenced not just European influenced. I actually thought this was common knowledge. This whole discussion sounds super Anglo-centric. Breaking news: A lot of us Americans are not white.
Adele and a lot of UK singers purposely sing in American accent I think to widen their appeal. The thing about Beyonce is that while she has party music, she also makes music with social commentary which to my knowledge Adele doesnât. For example she has a song called Brown Skin Girl that uplifts women across the world with darker skin. That song strikes more of a chord with me than Rolling In the Deep although I like Adele. My whole life Iâve loved Bee Gees, George Michael, Phil Collins, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Craig David. I saw Ed in concert. Itâs actually the female UK artists I tend to not be as into but I like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Sade, Natasha Whatherface, Dua Lipa.
I have noticed some UK artists like Ella Mai actually use a lot of US slang in their lyrics.
The punk movement is pretty distinctly British and still holds an edge in the art/fashion/music coming out of there (eg Alexander McQueen with fashion, etc) and music is a big part of that scene- and then also on other rock spectrum is the Beatles and Rolling Stones as well as Pink Floyd- many countries around the world outside of US grew up with British rock more than American, so Iâd agree that they have that edge and influence there. Thatâs for boomers. Milenialls and Gen Z shifted American internationally (probably because R&B is phenomenally influential).
Absolutely there is so much incredible music from the US- jazz, blues, hip hop, r&b, bluegrass⊠and many of those elements (particularly blues for rock and r&b for pop) holds an influence in UK as well since people borrow elements. There are also lots of American musicians borrowing from British (influenced from Pink Floyd etc)
One thing I have noticed thatâs different for sure in movies is the humor is different, but thatâs so subjective. And for cinematography/filming In the UK there is less obsession on âperfectionâ which I prefer, for example people donât always look perfectly styled down to the last detail, interiors donât look like a set, etc, seems more relaxed and authentic compared to US shows & films.
@@w00tz4ibanez Yes, but rock and jazz originated in America. Black Americans are responsible for forming every American musical genre including country, rock, and jazz.
@@capeverdeanprincess4444 yeah I wasnât trying to say that as a genre rock started in the Uk, but the specific sounds and sub genres coming out of there became very popular internationally
@@w00tz4ibanez Iâm a musician myself and I think we are all interconnected. I think itâs great to have creative collaboration. i was in New Orleans went to see a group of Peruvian Jazz musicians play a concert. Beautiful how music connects people. But I think claiming something as your culture is another layer. Example, I love reggae. I listen to reggae. But I wouldnât call it part of âmy cultureâ . Laurenâs comments like oh you have hip hop and country. British rock music is a by product of American rock music.meanwhile there is a lot that we have absorbed from the UK. But I feel like some UK people like to think we are a UK part 2 when itâs not that simple. The percentage of non Europeans living in the UK is greatly different from the percentage in the US. Maybe the discussion should be what product we think is better rather than what culture but that is subjective. If people are touchy itâs because for a long time music and other things associated with black Americans were looked down upon. Then they put a white person like Elvis who would go hang out in juke joints with black people to sing the same music and itâs not only acceptable but then before long the story of Rock and Roll ceases to have black people in it. Minorities in the USA and their contributions are often overlooked.
@@w00tz4ibanez I am also a videographer. I do like great and creative cinematography in a film but I also need great stories, developed complex characters. For awhile Hollywood just seemed like they wanted to blow things up and make the plot secondary. So I wonât act like I love everything we put out. But I do get to sometimes see my own culture black rural Southern reflected in our films so thatâs a bias for me. As a child I watched Helena Bonham Carter movies. I like the period pieces like Downton Abbey but a lot of the more modern stuff I canât get into. Here in the USA they would show Ms Marple and Inspector Poiroit. Now I loved some Benny Hill as a kid. Lol I can see more now with Netflix but I actually like shows from Spain more than England. I did watch Top Boy and there is an old show called Desmondâs I think that was really funny. It was also a chance for me to see people in your country other than the European majority. I prefer UK novels to UK cinema. but please give me some suggestions
Why not compare writers? Maybe there was not enough time.
I am surprised that jazz and blues from the US was not mentioned. Soul and funk was quite popular too. Perhaps, these are all small niches.
Stereotypically, I associate US movies with popcorn and a large soda. Then, the UK with a cup of tea, indoors, and rainy weather. It just depends on your mood at that time.
"who has better culture" Is not a discussion I would like to have with someone. You can talk about culture, but trying to come to the conclusion of who is better in unessecsary.
5:08 In addition to Harry Potter, we also have the James Bond series, the Ealing Comedies, the Carry On films, the Hammer Horrors, the work of Powell and Pressburger (The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp), the Cornetto trilogy, etc. We also have multiple large homegrown film studios such as Pinewood Studios (which makes James Bond and which made the Carry Ons). Our film industry peaked from the 1950s to 1970s, and many of the films I just mentioned are from that period.
Couldnât we get a Canadian and Australian to judge this one? đ
Why? They simply say the UK because of bias.
The fact that they ignored Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin.... ......
I noticed yeah it hurt a little
@JP and bet it hurt a little to
@JP sorry im saying it hurt my insides a little they left out alot of the musicians and bands that are very famous or popular that are American ones so I'm assuming forgetting the U.K ones hurt a little to they didn't even go over what I consider the best of the musicians either

I think American and Britain have very good cultures Doesn't matter which one's better every country has very good culture Some British words are similar To the American stuff
Respectfully i don't know why this video was made. The old "Americans are ignorant" stereotype is back firing. I love Lauren SO MUCH but rock and all that did not start in the UK it was made by people in the US, let alone made from BLACK PEOPLE. Also other people of color. Not to mention having two white people talk about culture esp for the US is kinda weird. Shannon held it down for the US but even she knows and showed with that eye roll that this was a far fetched video. America has about 4-5 TIMES the amount of people in the UK. Not to mention 87% of ppl in the UK are White... compared to Americans dramatic diversity of all races and different cultures. You'll see a whole lot of Indians or middle easterns in the USA way faster than in the UK. (not personally to Lauren, much love) But the fact that Lauren thinks some of these started in the UK is an unfortunate representation of how black and other minorities have been stolen from. Much respect to UK culture and its diversity... but the US is WAY TOO BIG and DIVERSE by miles compared to the UK to compare "american culture." No harm was intended as we all love thus channel, but this was not it.
American dream, British scream
There are more percent Indians in UK I guess. But yeah overall USA is more diverse
@Tyree k. Unless I'm missing something I think your wrong. White English bands like The Beatles for example are not that same kind of sounds that was coming out of black Americans Rock & Roll music like Little Richard. Rock & Roll isn't the same as Rock music, it's dance music. If guitar isn't the prominent instrument it isn't rock music. A lot of Rock & Roll is piano and saxophones. Rock came out of Rockabilly & Pop Rock. Rockabilly & Pop Rock came out of Rock & Roll and County. Rock & Roll came out of Boogie Woogie & Blues. Country came out of white American folk culture. There was a combination and progression of white European instruments & culture combined with black Americans culture. These sounds didn't spring up from Europe or Africa. No other races really influenced American culture in those beginnings since there were hardly any other races here at that time besides American whites and blacks. There is no stealing of culture from blacks or other minorities. The misconception is the definition of what Rock music is. If this was about Ragtime, Blues, Rock (& Roll), R&B, Boogie Woogie, Doo-Wop, Funk, Hip Hop and they said the U.K. invented that then you would be right.
@@KyleReeseCel2029 didnât the Beatles say themselves that a major influence was American blues and rock amongst things like Indian music, etcâŠ. Also country music is far more intertwined with aa culture even back since the late 1800s than you give it credit for.

This is really chicken and egg: African-Americans got rock Music from English folk music. Black Music from the 19th century, Built upon through the 20th-century, shows total influence from folk music, pre-19th-century amongst rednecks in UK, Which is an element of the culture that black culture transitioned from during slavery (UK rednecks), as black Africans unfortunately had, most of(but not all) their culture stolen from them

True. It didnât come from England like this English girl said.
That's debatable - certainly They were a major influence., then you could say that Afro-American music comes from folk and classical in UK and Europe, Just like recently, its been proven that black American culture, comes from white rednecks, from the UK, transferred to black communities, who were robbed of their culture during the enslavement transition. For movies and televisions there is a MASSIVE gap. The UK have a plethora of skilled actors coming from theater productions with experience doing live shows and actual training. That is why the British actors are everywhere in American productions as well, on the whole they tend to be much more skilled. In the US they have the classic "dream of becoming an actor" where people from all over the country just move to LA and try to become an actor. Some make it (largely based on luck and/or looks, not to completely disregard talent), but on the whole it not exactly conducive to good performances. You see all the time these British actors get hired to play roles where they need to do challenging US dialects. They are simply on another level even if their movie industry is not at the same level as the one in the US.
The greatest actors of all time are American well, at least the majority.
@@DA-db9bi America has produced a lot of excellent actors, no doubt. There are also a metric shit ton of terrible ones that get roles in TV and movies, much more so than in the UK. I would say your "majority" statement is arguably accurate, but put in perspective the MASSIVE gulf in acting opportunities with the US being a much larger market and has been ever since movie and TV came to be. It is/would be impossible for them not to at least be up there, after all people like to hear and see stories that they can relate to. Think how many productions get made that are set in the US. I would say it is absolutely notable how many Brits are killing it in TV and in Hollywood.
@@DA-db9bi It's totally a matter of opinion as to what is great. also, quantity means nothing in this situation, as America as 4 times the population. in Polls of the 2 greatest actors of all time, Taken from all generations would undoubtedly be Lawrence Olivier and Daniel Day Lewis, both British. Our music is by far the best because of our huuuge diversity....where a small few of UK artist kinda carry the torch the circle is real small compared to the US....movies, as well very few UK movies and shows have made it here ...Netflix has been a real driver in bringing international shows to the US n most have been real winner but thats still grasping straws compared to sticks.....sorry UK we got you beat
I guess it depends on how you define 'a small few UK artists'... There are and always have been loads of British musicians and bands that are massive in the US (and the rest of the world). And some of them were hugely influential like Bowie or the Beatles. If you look up the list of best selling music artists of all time on wikipedia, of all the artists who managed to sell over 250 million records, 3 are American and 5 are British.
I'm from Germany and to me it is pretty damn impressive that such a (comparably) small country has been this influential in the music industry. Lower down on the list you can find more American ones but still a fair amount of British artists. And the British music industry is pretty diverse too, maybe some of the more interesting stuff just doesn't make it to the US? Don't get me wrong, I love loads of American musicians but considering that the US is much, much bigger, the British music industry is kinda more impressive for its size.
And as for the British film industry... I think you'd be surprised. It's booming. It has recently seen much more growth than the American one. It's actually becoming a real competitor. And that is just looking at stats and predictions about things like studio space and box office. Back when I studied film, British films would on average get higher ratings in reviews than Hollywood films. Some would consider critical acclaim more important than box office or quantity. That was a few years ago though so I don't know if it's still accurate today.
False

USA have many legends while UK has A MONTAIN of legends... đ
I think you need people on here that know more about music historically and the various genres and the artists in those genres because this is sad. Also overall about the different topics across the board on here. Too basic. Rock is from the US, you wouldnât have Drum and Bass without the Praise Break sample from African American churches, UK Drill is from Chicago Drill, Techno was created in Detroit, Jazz and all the different types like New Orleans and Coltraneâs freeform jazz is from the U.S. R&B, Big Band, Soul, hybrid music, Rap, Country, Bluegrass, Swing, Ragtime, are all American as well and even those can be broken down into sub genres, like letâs get some real information in these videos.
Americans got way more music diversity than UK since UKâs modern music especially comes from the U.S. mostly anyways đ When all your favs and legends are fans and were inspired from our originators, we already know who won!

I do give the UK credit though for a small island they push way harder than their weight class.
I think the United States and Great Britain have influenced each other for our benefit. We had rhythm and blues and early rock and roll such as Elvis, who influenced the Beatles. There are other great British bands in the late sixties and early 70s. The UK also gave the world the Rolling Stones, The Who, led Zeppelin deep purple and Black Sabbath. They gave the Sex Pistols and we gave the Ramones. We gave the world Disco. They gave us Iron Maiden Judas Priest and the rest of the new wave of British heavy metal in the late seventies and early eighties. And that inspired Metallica and similar bands. I haven't even scratched the surface of pop culture, pop music and fashion. We're incredibly grateful for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost by the way (just had to throw that in there). In all seriousness, I would never want to compare our cultures. England gave us the concept of the magna Carta and the Parliament, which influenced us. British philosopher John Locke heavily inspired our Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers. And thanks to Scotland, I have several kilts hanging in my wardrobe as well. Yeah no comparison necessary. I still love your videos though
I mean maybe in some areas but for the most esp in music is very different. You've mentioned like 10 percent of amercian culture. Like american rap (Hip hop) is different all over. We have West coast, East coast, southern, texas, DMV etc. All of those are influenced by African american culture that is vasly different. I didnt even mention Hispanic rap or their froms of music. Altho i agree that they may have influenced eachother but for the most part they really havent. Another example (how hip pop started) is Jazz music. Which again is another African american root but is now world wide and is losing its root acknowledgement. Ive only mentioned one culture but this can apply to the Mexican-Americans, the Asian Americans, and on and on.
@@tyreek.6815 I agree 100% And I only brainstormed my initial thoughts. That's why I had to conceid immediately that I only scratched the surface. I love rock and heavy metal and one must acknowledge that everything came from the blues. Early rock and roll was heavily influenced by African Americans as well. And that kind of led into my point listing all those late 60s early 70s British bands because they were also very influenced by American blues. And you're 100% correct about other outside influences and cultures influencing Western popular culture. I appreciate you adding on to my comments because it wasn't my intention too omit all of those influences.

All of UK music is rooted in American music, specifically African American music. TLDR: The US' culture is more relevant around the world thanks in large part to WWII. Prior to WWII, the US, Europe, and Russia had more cultural impact than the US. Ranking is subjective.
Ranking is subjective. But impact can be measured. The US has a more impactful culture because WWII left Europe in disarray and the US's Marshall plan and global institutions. There is also an element to our less-regulated markets leading to more innovation in media and fashion. But that comes with more pollution, disease, homelessness, and less-well being amongst the citizens.
The UK had more cultural strength prior to WWII when it was aggressively colonial. At the turn of the 20th century, the US was mostly ignored. In US cities at the time, Paris, London, Vienna, and Moscow culture was top-class.

Depending on the genre, itâs the norm for the singer not to be the songwriter. I have friends who make a living writing songs for other people. I also write and record songs. Itâs not uncommon for labels to have writers on staff. Also itâs not necessarily that writers are writing for a particular artist. They write the song, make a demo, then pitch it around trying to get whatâs called a cut. But thatâs very hard to do without connections. Probably the songwriters in your country have traveled to the USA and hustled to make connections in the industry

When it comes to music America wins. Because the influence from the US in the UK is so apparent itâs ridiculous
90% of the most popular "American" music is actually Swedish written/produced or have very much tried to emulate that. I would say very rarely does the US music scene influence the UK one except for the tennis game of rock/metal music taking a lot of influence from the African American music genres and going back and forth, as well as I guess rap music. The Swedish music producers have had a MASSIVE influence on popular music for decades. They have exerted that influence on the US market and that has bled over into the UK (and the world). But I dont think it is fair to say necessarily that that makes it American. These same producers have written and produced many/most of the biggest hits for the likes of Taylor Swift (who fair enough does a fair bit of her own writing I believe), Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Britney Spears.
