The best part about it is how I find it comedic sometimes, and horrifically insidious other times. Especially when you take a look back and see that the cockroaches are in fact innocent in all of this. They're bugs on earth that have no relation to the arachnids.

I never even knew this movie existed until I saw people comparing it to helldivers 2. The movie came out a couple years before I was born though

CGI from 1997 still holds up and they werent afraid to film CGI heavy scenes in bright daylight where its harder to hide any flaws. Many movies at the time (Jurrasic Park) used night shots for alot of CGI heavy shots.
There isn't that much CGI in Starship Troopers. Or which heavy shots you do refer?
@MrBubbleJet every single time you see the full body of a bug in motion its CGI, not to mention full scale space battles, planet P, klendathu etc.

Is the book played completely straight faced rather than satire?
The book is written by a guy who wanted to make a philosophical case about a pure fascist society divorced from racism or bigotry, a pure authoritarian militarized society where the worth of citizens is only in their contribution to the state- all the order of the Nazis without their hatred and persecution. The movie was made by a dutch WW2 survivor who vehemently opposed fascism, and made the movie into a satire of the source material, presenting it incredibly straight in order to show how ridiculous it is. Basically its a big middle finger
its on display best in scenes like these, how it hints the humans are the real aggressors and bugs defending themselves, but the jingoistic troops just want to kill them all@@Demolitions75

The movie took that and made it a satire of a militarist fascist state.
Personally I enjoy both.
This movie has aged so incredibly well

The game while being pretty tongue in cheek sort of fails to say much about the subject (and why would it its a video game?) thereby almost glorifying the regressive, authoritarian messaging that the original movie appeared to criticize.

It still blows my mind how good this looks even today. This and District 9 are those two movies that always looked far more realistic than other movies that relied on CGI heavily

i love in helldivers 2 most bugs are quite effectively dispatched by destroying its legs
Those troops didn't listen to the tip.
A lot different situation when they're not behind a cage but when hundreds are charging you at once, with zero fear of death.
Then there is a scene towards the end where 3 of them are killing the aliens effortlessly when before it took an entire squad to kill 1.

@@jackson4162 Knowing the tone of the movie there may not even be a nerve stem, on the field so to speak it seems to take so many bullets to kill one, the one in the cage could be weakened for all we wanna fanfic but ultimately it's in the state's interest to make the soldiers think these things are easier to take down than they actually are in the wild.

I used to think how the average starship trooper is an idiot for not aiming for the nerve stem, until I started playing Helldivers 2.
Turns out, aiming is hard.
Kinda hard when they're crawling at considerable pace in multitudes. Sorry, I know I'm kind of stating the obvious or even making the same point as you but worded differently, I just wanted to add something.
Hunters jumping to flank aren't easy to hit.
Watching this on VHS and then killing Zerg as Terran just defines 1998 for me

I saw this in the theater. I loved this movie then and I love it now. Funny thing is, it's nothing like the novel and I love both the movie and the novel.
The novel offers a different take on the discussion the movie makes. Love the novel for what it says but love the satire of the film.
The novel discusses the politics seriously like the movie, it just honestly wants the same positions (and they’re not satirized). Verhoven’s take is very interesting, and while made with 30+ years of hindsight does a good job explaining the counter argument.
The book itself is insanely good with its sci fi, though. The armor in the movie is NOTHING compared to the books, and their power armor concept is used in a lot of modern sci fi (HALO, Fallout, Warhammer 40K, etc)
@@toprope_ I wouldn't say it wants the same thing. I think the book talks about the honor and respect that soldiers should have and should feel. The book is actually very critical of the society it creates.

In the current game starship troopers , extermination , it is actually a fact that if you aim just below and behind the eyeball of the center of the bug warrior you will hit the nerve stem and kill it quicker than if you just wildly shoot it at the legs. It only takes 3 bullets compared to the 16 normally required. If you are not aiming for the nerve stem

As a kid I thought these videos were neat and cool to learn how they’re conducting their studies.
Years laters as an adult, the realization that this was propaganda hit me like a ton of bricks!
Eh, Starship Trooper can be dissected 2 dif ways and I don't mean movie vs book. If you are a right leaning person and admire things like strength, honor, duty? The Earth Federation is better then any actual government in existence lol. If you're left leaning and value things like equity, uplifting the weak and true Democracies (Everyone can vote) you could instead see it as the director intended.
Some bugs may have been harmed in the filming of this movie
I thought that too, luckily the roaches they're stepping on are fake and the only real animals in the film were ferrets, frogs, and one cow

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but the first scene in this with Neil Patrick Harris has a lone warrior in a room with wide bars it could easily reach through. Scientists alike are crowded right up to the gate pointing and looking busy, making the violence towards the bug look normal and justified to desensitize the propaganda viewer.
Another thought is they'd be totally annihilated if the bug was actually in the room behind those bars with them. Possible camera trickery? Trying to make the bug look stupid and docile? ALL part of the plan.

They don't have free press, only state run press, and if you aren't a citizen then you don't have any sort of say in the politics of that world at all. And the movie is made from a propaganda perspective, so I doubt most people who don't become citizens would actually be living as niceas Rico's parents

Great scene, but in later scenes, M.I. troops use a lot more ammo than Carl does here to kill one arachnid warrior. Five or six shooters will practically empty a whole magazine into one warrior before it goes down, and in view of the fact that we later learn about brain bugs, about the fact that those thousands of warriors have no brains to speak of, that’s a lot of ammo in an ineffective strategy. WTF?
Internal propaganda,ger your men hyped and confident so they dont run away ... Immediately that is.
Probably a combination of the MI missing due to being scared and the hits that do land are only hitting limbs or not doing immediately fatal wounds to the carapace. Carl is in a controlled situation where the warrior cannot get to it so he can easily aim for the weak point (some part of its nervous system) for a cleaner kill.
This is one of my all time favorite movies

I can only imagine Paul Verhoeven's disappointment when he included a scene where kids hatefully step on innocent bugs and Americans didn't get it.
