this is absolutely impressive. this kid isnt real. hes a glitch in the matrix.
He is in a class by himself. With millions of people appreciating his talent and emotion.
This morning I listened to a Herbie Hancock solo CD. Among other numbers he has interpreted his ballad "Sonrisa" - a composition by him. The beautiful melody grabbed me immediately. He plays his piece very sensitively.
This evening I heard Joey Alexander's interpretation of this number on CZcams. I was torn, listened to the track several times, but I liked Joey's version, then 10 years old, better than Herbie Hancock's original.
As much as I love the incredible HH, I have to say that this is the version I keep coming back to because I still marvel that a not-quite-10yr-old boy could play with such exquisite sensitivity
I made the same comparison between JA's and HH's versions a few years ago and came to the same conclusion. What can one say? Oh and by the way, he is still 9 years old in this video!
I cannot believe that something this incredible and rare only has a little over 14 thousand hits. This kid is a true genius. He is not just good for his age. He is great with high professional standards and high level of musical sophistication and professional quality for ANY age. I hope to meet him someday.
Tom Potjunas it just means that you were one of the first to notice, we can't all notice something great simultaneously, even in the age of instant ex/communication
Tom Potjunas ditto!!!!!
I often wonder after having heard this for the first time did Joey understand his counterpoint in this work is Fugal ? He is actually playing a fugue on Herby Hancock's Sonerisa and that is why it is such a great performance.
I just saw him live Saturday night. Incredible.
@@DrjamesM1 It was simply.coming straight.from his reincarnated soul at this time. Look where he Is Now.. A genius of geniuses
The human brain can be truly amazing but it almost seems like there is something more here.
It's people like this that convinced me I had no future in music
This is amazing on every level. We are witnessing musical history here. Absolutely first class, a new class in fact!!!
+Craig McLanachan You Damn Right...This is a New Class.....
+Didim Surendim I think this the most exciting time for many years now that we have Joey. I listen to his CD a lot and I understand he is recording another at present. I can't wait!
just found this kid. have been listening to all his music all day. my gosh. i played piano for 10 years and was never able to get close to this. amazing.
His debut album was released on May 2015 ... and it is nominated for Grammy!!! What an incredible journey for Joey!!!
Still my favourite Joey video after all this time. The sheer wonder of what he can play!
I have watched this video many times and this is my comment: a sublime performance .... We are watching a jazz legend in the making. TWO times Grammy's nomination: 2016 and 2017. I just can't hardly wait when he is 20. And I am very grateful living in this century ...
Goosebumps all over as watching Joey playing the piece... He’s born and destined to be a great crafting jazzmanship. God bless you Joey
You've also listened to all the great ones? Like Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Fred Hersch and so on? Brad Mehldau? You did? Me too. I have never seen and heard something like this before. This is truly amazing and a joy to watch. It's true what people write: Joey Alexander is a kind of Jazz-Mozart. I hope he will come to Amsterdam soon. Can't wait to see him.
Sunday 16/7 he is coming to The Lantaarn Rotterdam!
www.lantarenvenster.nl/33-Muziek
Missed it unfortunately. Thanks for your message.
Started to learn jazz at about 6, won a master jazz prize at about 9, nominated a grammy at about 13 ?
You just make me wonder what have I been doing....??
Josua P he is nominated a grammy start when he was 12, now 13.. the youngest grammy nomination ever.. 😊 and he released 2 albums, and both grammy nomination. 😅
the youngest nomination on jazz category... there were younger than Joey that become grammy nominee and even winner :)
One of the youngest for sure, there was Deleon Richards who nominated for best soul/gospel performance by a female for her Myrrh/Word album, DeLeon at age of 9 in 1985. And no one said he is the youngest who nominated in Grammy's but Youngest in Jazz category
Josua P actually he was nominated for Grammy at age 12.
Sometimes, not very often, when words fail to express a feeling generated by an event (in this case music) we can only moan and groan with our eyes closed and head bowed. This is one of those events. Young Alexander is a legion of old musical spirits in one body. I am moved by his extraordinary talent and the passion expressed through his love of Jazz.
Joey really seems to have zero stress and zero ego- he just plays- so so beautifully!
Such an inspiration for us all-
Indeed. He just plays and you can tell he enjoys it!They said. There’s kids who plays in the sandbox, play sports , play with other kids,,, well ,Joey thoroughly enjoy playing his piano! He’s incredible gift is immensely enjoyed❤
This young man plays like this even before he knows the feeling of falling in love (I assume?) or got broken hearted (I assume? ) or losing love of his life (sorry, assuming again). Can't wait to watch him play 15 years from now!
If you don't believe in miracles...his talent might make you reconsider.
A real artist ... ultimate jazz pianist 👍👍👍
insane skill and the depth of feeling for a kid that old, playing a masterpiece song. this is too much for me
I need to practice a whole lot more! After hearing Joey, maybe I should just quit! Excellent Job Joey! I wish!!!!
It's not about exercise. This is a great talent ..
fantastic, Joey , you are making us so proud of you . Congrats to your parents for bringing you up fantastically
10 years old... There are no words... Mind blown...
ChaoticEuphoria he was 9 in this video
JOEY ALEXANDER est un jeune pianiste PRODIGE, il est né comme un "GENIE". Le Ciel fut généreux pour son talent. Il n'y a rien à
dire ou à expliquer. FABULEUX..! MERVEILLEUX..!
Amazing talent....cant wait to meet you and see you play here in Indonesia on May 2016, Joey!
I am become beauty.
Unfolding - possessed and unconstrained; a force, a tide, a pulsing light.
I am the music.
In me there is no guile - pure, unfiltered joy.
I am the life behind the veil, the hidden beauty flowering.
I am the music.
This is what it is to live.
It is what I joyously become every time my spirit dances.
I am the music.
Nicholas Fulford Now that is beautiful !
Love your poem..may I share?
A brilliant poem. Second stanza a particularly stunning truth here.
Gods... such brilliance and sensitivity out of such tiny hands!
What an advanced level of spirit at such a young age...see...if you just let it become what it was meant to become, not a problem. society, too many artificial obstacles
Park Jung Hun - Nicholas Went I concur!
Park Jung Hun - Nicholas Went You speak the truth friend!
+Park Jung Hun - Nicholas Went thats the truth sir.
Wow! Such feeling and emotion in his playing. It seems impossible and takes years to develop for someone so young.
it is simple because he plays by heart and that is touching to our hearth
Only 125 likes for this prodigy of the prodigies? Come on!
Christoph Münch Now I know there is a "like" button on youtube as well. Wish there was a "love" button for this kid!!!

utk kesekian kalinya nyari pianis cilik ini di youtube, akhirnya ketemu juga... :)
I hope people who play Classical Music take this as an example of the true music. Music is made of 4 elements: Melody, Harmony, Rhythm and the most important thing: CREATIVITY.
+Dihelson Mendonca Be careful with the generalizations.
Those who dislike my observations...go figure out: They are not Jazz musicians and often don´t like nor understand this style of music or what I said.
Easy. I'm a musician, not a jazzist nor a classical only. I write scores for orchestra arranging cinema and videogame music and I'm pianist in a latin orchestra and a Dixeland band too. The true musician (I'm not that much even if I sound pedantic. There's still a lot I have to learn) likes and understand every kind of music. Take George Gershwin for example. is Classical music (romantic really) for also has a lot of elements of jazz and even jazzist use to play his music.
I play classical music in orchestras and piano solo or with singers, but that don't stop me to play jazz or other styles.
And I play with musicians that master much more variety than I do. That's why I tell you:
Be careful with the generalizations.
Interesting. I play Jazz and Classical music for more than 40 years. And the more I study, the more I praise creativity as the aim of the great art. Joey Alexander is a single example of artist. There´s thousands of them, like: Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Coltrane, Charlie Parker...Michael Brecker. Art Tatum...Chopin, Bach, Liszt, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky. They are great, because they CREATED something new. They didn´t limited themselves to play other people´s music or read a piece of paper. Creation is the most central and important thing in music.
+Dihelson Mendonca Just listen back and enjoy this exceptional talent. I was a pro piano player but not even in his league. I enjoy classical and jazz and other music but I cannot understand how good this young man is at his age. I was a bit of a prodigy at a young age but this young man is a lot better than I will ever be. EDIT yes I like your choices of musicians. They used to say I played a lot like Oscar. And Art Tatum I love. You heard of the Frank Petty Trio?
idk why , but I really love this Joey... the music feels so deep and intense...
there is nothing to say never heard such a player he is something outstanding , hope we'll enjoy his music for many more years.
Just saw his story on 60 minutes. So gifted and Awesome! Love it!!
+Stephanie Harris I saw that same show and I'm a fan forever. Amazing. Another one of Gods gift to us.

I must agree with Stephanie.
❤️🇮🇩
I wish to know which frustrated people gives hime a negative vote. Unbelievable
.
ebald It is way beyond me that a certain bozo gave a thumb down to an 11 year old kid.
ebald I can bet they cannot play a C major scale, and highly possible they wouldn't be able to find a C key on the piano :) so leave those poor bastards alone.
He's obviously not young enough!?
+ebald "I wish to know which frustrated people gives hime a negative vote. Unbelievable"
Justin Bieber fans.
+ebald Those who keep up with the Kardashians probably ;-)

I hear the voice of God..
I don't know what to say but to me it is a much better rendition than the original. He plays by his heart. I'm kinda swept away by his playing ... ;-)
Ecce Cor Meum
Gg
keith.... peterson
Or Herbie Evans Mehldau? It's like he is all of them rolled into one. Just astounding.
this kid remind me of Arima Kousei
How did he get to this point from where he was two years earlier? He obviously is working his butt off seen here- czcams.com/video/JycPSvwypqc/video.html
he like 9 years old here, so He's been playing jazz music since he was, what?, a toddler? That's not normal. Reincarnation is the only explanation.
+claryn anita My thoughts also, I believe reincarnation perhaps also. Either way I love it means all the masters will be returning.
+claryn anita Since he was 6. From Wikipedia, he was listening since he was born, grew up on Bali, a Christian family, also loves gospel music apparently...his dad is an amateur jazz piano player and evidently had a great record collection. One day he came home and Joey was playing something by ear, pretty complicated. The family moved to NYC in 2014 to help his career.
He doesn't read music apparently. All by ear....Way beyond the years thing it is just great music to listen to, just to forget it is a kid and listen-
+claryn anita He got his first piano at 6 so in the video he's only played the piano for about 1000 days. I can't imagine.
He only started at 6. That's relatively late compared to other "prodigies". He learned amazingly fast. Really we've never seen anything like this before in history.
Уверен, что найдись в зале маститые музыканты, то они не смогли бы так сыграть.
Это выше понимания логики развития человека.
Так может мыслить только взрослый, ЗРЕЛЫЙ музыкант.
Верните ребёнку детство!
Hello, folks. how do you compare his development with other kids on his age that plays CHOPIN, LISZT, and other astonishing composers ?
Dihelson Mendonca He's better. He can play Chopin, Liszt and rachmaninoff for sure. That's how you learn and hone your chops as a pianist. Classical music is a great lesson in technique and scales, arpeggios and theory but this actually requires more thinking because he's improvising on just chord progressions. To have this much feel and understanding at 11 is unreal.
tyrone2252 he's not 11 when he played this. 9 yrs old....3 weeks before reaching 10 yrs old
Dihelson Mendonca I have not read that he studied classically at all. From what his father said, and he himself as well, he just learned starting at age six on a keyboard his dad brought home, from records his dad had of many jazz greats. What sets someone like this into another sphere of consideration is that he is improvising----he does not play the piece 2 times the same way. It is beyond astonishing. And then that he is so clearly happy doing this and giving it to others--an open beautiful spirit. Listening to him play fills me with gladness and not at all just because he is so young, but rather because he plays with such fresh vision perhaps...
Dihelson Mendonca Chopin and Liszt are quantified: Either you follow the score to the note or else. One of Joey's other CZcams vid has Billy Crystal saying that Billy heard Joey play 'Round Midnight 3 times, and it was played different each time: You can't do that with Chopin, Liszt, and other astounding composers and be taken seriously; or can you.
I hope Joey never plays Chopin, Liszt. and other astounding composers' songs the way they were written to be played.
Have you heard Joey's version of Armando's Rhumba? He was responding to Chick's latest version (Trondheim 2012): It's like a conversation that began with the first version in My Spanish Heart: Granted, it was Chick talking to himself most of the time, but now there's another voice present.
Dihelson Mendonca Friends, I´m a Jazz Pianist, and I agree with your oppinions about Joey, when you say that his playing is superior to other kids playing just classical music, because playing Jazz is much much more than memorizing keynotes. The problem is that classical musicians would NEVER agree with us. I have done many quarrels with these guys because I argue that Jazz need more intelligence to play. And to play like this needs a superior intelligence.
