    Brilliant video helped me a lot, I really enjoy watching your videos they are so thorough and inadept, unlike many others youtubers I watch were they jump from subject to subject without much explanation. This video has helped me a lot! I am only recently new in the photography world, just over 3 months I outgrew my first camera the "Nikon d5300" and because of your channel and videos I decided to go with the canon 80D and am very happy with it. Thank you!!

    Grant - I use 7d MkII, 5D Mk III, and 80D. Much appreciation for your videos. One thing about the 80D that I find helpful is that when it is used with certain lenses such as the 100-400 IS II (Mk2) and tele converter - it does offer zone autofocus points at f/8 - Compared to the 7D MkII or 5D MkIII which would only offer single point with 4 helpers. I know that you had very good review for the 100-400 Mk2 and it combines with 80D to have that unique capability on the 80D camera. I find it useful for birds in flight. Thanks. Kevin

    Grant, do you have any recommendations about pros and cons of 80D vs 7DmkII for wildlife? Which do you find yourself reaching for more often now that both cameras are out? You've done great videos on both, but none explicitly comparing the two, and they are both approximately the same cost currently on the used market.

      Hi Kranthi, the 7Dmk2 is built tougher, has a bigger body that fits people with bigger hands better, has better viewfinder autofocus, deeper buffer, faster and more responsive. The 80D has slightly better image quality with a bit less noise and more dynamic range, is more versatile in how many ways you can use it with the toch screen, is quite a bit smaller and lighter...hope something there helps

    Thank you so very much for this brilliant, clear and concise effort..!!
    Do you find a polarizer helpful for wildlife/bird photography (maybe not for already slow tele lenses)..??
    I have the 80D for about a year and stumbled upon your videos while seeking info on extenders.
    I'm looking forward to using my Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 for birding (the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 is too short for distant views) and have learned more in your two of your videos than I have all year..LOL!!.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Phillip, glad the video was useful. I dont use polarizing filters at all for anything to do with wildlife as i find they usually cause any darker parts of my image to become too dark. If that happens to be part of my subject then I prefer to avoid using them. The polarizing filters also slow down autofocusing, so if I am trying to photograph marine mammals or marine birds, then i avoid using them. But, if you are taking landscapes and are looking for good rendering of the water, clouds etc, then the polarizer does a good job.

    Grant - do you find any advantages in using the 80D over the 7D2 for wildlife other than the slightly higher resolution? I own both cameras but I use the 80D more for macro and as a backup to the 7D2. I enjoy your videos and I'd like to see some videos where you are in the field doing wildlife photography and seeing how you approach your subjects. Thanks much!!

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 7 lety +10

      Thanks Anthony, I am finding that the images from the 80D have lower noise, specially if I view them or use them at equal-sized outputs, to the 7D2. It is not a huge difference but it's there.... I would like to do more videos in the field, but at this stage the cost in logistics would be prohibitive. Will keep thinking about it.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Rajman, I have not used the 80D on that Sigma lens much so I wont be speaking from experience. Rough starting points for moving subjects might be: Ai Servo mode, Evaluative metering: Single Focus point selected manually: Ai Servo 1st Image Priority - Release: Ai Servo 2nd Image Priority - Middle . Autofocus Tracking Sensitivity - 0 unless it keeps dropping off subject then Minus 1: Accel/Decelerate - 0: AF Pt Auto Switching - 0: Lens Drive when AF Impossible - 0 - Continue Focus Search:. Those would be starting points, you are better off to try understand what those focus parameters are actually doing when making adjustments. All those focus adjustment parameters that i mentioned above are all similar in their effect on the 80D, to the ones in the 7D Mark 2, which I have explained part by part, in a 5 video series on the autofocus system. That will be relevant to the 80D ..

      Hi Marc, it has the best sensor so far of any other Canon APS-C camera for such kind of shooting, short of getting a full frame body of course. I think it will be helpful to your image quality if you are able to get the exposures as close as possible to what you want, whilst taking the images of course..and any extra light sources that you can add always helps when shooting blacks in low light with any dslr ...

    I'm thinking of getting a Camera used for Photography only, I can't decide which to get?? 80D, 6D, Nikon D610, Sony A7ii, or anything else??? I thought that a flip screen would be very helpful for me when I shoot. I can;t decide and Ihave no clue!

      Really depends on what kind of subject matter you will be shooting, and if there are multiple types, which will be the one most important to you?

      If you aren't sure what you want, grab a less expensive camera and learn for a few years. Then, when you want to spend big money you'll know what you use and how things work. I have had a rebel T3 for 5 years and I am finally upgrading. Often times lenses are a better expenditure and will have a larger impact on what you can do with your camera.

    Hi! I just saw your video great video by the way!! I have an 80D and debating between a Tamron 150-600 and Sigma for a safari trip. Which do you recommend it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      I have used the Sigma 150-600 Sport as well as both of the Tamron 150-600 models but not the Sigma Contemporary. Can be a bit tough for me to recommmend but I might tend toward the Tamron G2 though they are all quite capable The Sigma Sport is quite heavy and managing the zoom ring is not always the easiest for folk with smaller hands.

    Hi Grant great video thanks i am quite new but have a 80D and a 5Dmk 2 i was thinking of changing my Tamron 150-600 to a Canon 100-400 USM mk 2 will this lens work with both?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Scott, the 100-400ii will work superbly with both the 80D and the 5dmk2. If you put on a 1.4x extender on the lens though, then the viewfinder autofocus will still work with the 80D but not the 5dmk2.

    • @scottmo31
      @scottmo31 Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks for that Grant i will be using the extender on the 80D it's just to get closer to the 600mm range i got on the tamron lens i will be replacing and hope to see a noticeable improvement with it.

      Hi Scott, these things are all a bit subjective but I am not sure if the Canon EF 100-400 IS ii WITH a 1.4x iii Extender will be much of an improvement on a Tamron 150-600mm lens...for sure the bare lens works better (but only up to 400mm ). Of course each shooter has their own needs or preferences, I can only share what is relevant to my own way of using these things. :-)

      Hi Scoth, I got Tamron 150-600 G2 and found tamron teleconverter is working only on live view mode but is tricky to get it done. On the Canon 400mm Prime lens my Tamron teleconverters with Canon 80D never get working, they freeze the camera. I don't know how performs with the Canon extender. But in the wildlife photography the focal length is never enough. Keep the Tamron. 600mm F6.3 is much better than 600mm F8. Also with 1.4 extender you can go to 840mm, F9 for not moving objects without loosing the image quality. With the 1.6 camera crop factor you are going to - 1344mm optical zoom.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 6 lety

      It sounds like the shutter speed may need to be faster (a higher number) or else the aperture made smaller ( a higher number for the f-stop) if you are using M mode and Auto iso and the ambient light was very bright?

  • @melrosemediaonline

    Hi Grant, Would you say that the 80D is a close second to the 7Dmarkii for birds and wildlife. I already own a 7D mark ii and a 5D mark iii but looking for second crop sensor body to sit on my Sigma 150-600 Sport. I could buy another 7D mark ii but like the option of the 80D with the 24mp and also buying it with the two kit lenses for holiday travel rather than taking around my more expensive heavy glass. Your views are much appreciated?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 6 lety

      I would agree with that take on the 80D, it is not quite as good overall as an action camera as the 7D2 if all factors are considered, but it does bring something additional, both with regard to resolution, plus that flip screen versatility. And it can be a tiny bit better than the 7D Mk 2 in very low light.
