    That is about THE most comprehensive common sense video i've seen on this. I had no idea my camera had so much adjustment. After watching this 2 or 3 times, i'm frankly amazed that I got the great pictures I did in Alaska back in July. Most of that was done in full auto mode for every setting, this will give me the confidence to play around with the manual settings and eventually get some better pictures

    Hi Grant Love your videos after purchasing a Canon 80d. We are going to Kenya and Serengeti for thirteen days this weekend. As we will be travelling by land on the special safari buses do you have any tips to ensure I bring back some amazing photos please. I am quite a novice with DSLR cameras and sometimes find my photos are blurred. Many thanks Mo from UK

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 4 lety

      Perhaps put your camera into TV mode and make sure that your keep the shutter speed at least 1/500 second where enough ambient light exists. Or you could use M mode with Auto Iso and ensure that the shutter speed is between 1/500sec and upwards to 1/3200sec in bright situations. It seems to be slow shutter speed that most often cause blurry pictures. Use the Single Point focus option and place the focus point on your subjects eye or face as best as you can manage.

    Hello Grant firstly I think your tutorials are great appreciate the information Thank you.Yesterday I was in single point focus and tying to focus on a big Dragon fly on a large stick. Camera kept focusing on the stick instead of the insect even though the focus point was clearly on the Dragon fly which adjustments to the Auto focus would you recommend to fix this problem.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  Před 6 lety

      Hi Shayne, sometimes there is not enough contrast to help the autofocus point 'find' the part of the frame that you want to be 'in-focus' easily, so then i might try change my angle slightly to see if a different angle makes the dragonfly stand out more. Other things to try are to use the Single AF Point, and try use the middle one as it is most sensitive. You could also switch to One Shot Focus, and try that way. When having that kind of problem, i sometimes let the camera get focused (using a Single AF Point) on the stick, then gradually move my composition along the stick until the focus point is on the dragonfly itself, that can work if there are not other obstructions along the way

Pressing that button will shift you through the different focus point options, one at a time.

      @grantatkinson8108  Před 3 lety

      Hi Lorina, glad the videos are useful. About the Birds In Flight, it can be frustrating because it is not just about camera settings. However, if I am using the 80D for bird in flight photography, I will use Single AF Point (i find it locks on better), Tracking Sensitivity set to Zero or Minus 1, Ai Servo, Continuous High frame rate and perhaps Ai Servo 1st Image and 2nd Image priority set to Release and Speed respectively. But even with these settings and lots of practice, I miss many more shots than i keep. I have no idea of your experience nor where you are trying to get the birds in flight, but it is worth looking for any well known hotspots to go practice in, even if the birds are common variety. What helps just as much or even more than settings are getting close enough, having birds that are not terrified and always flying away, and learning or taking advantage of any kind of behaviour that can help you to follow them with some predictability. Like sitting beside the only waterhole in a very dry area or waiting close to where birds may fly in to a feeding station ?

      @@MrElldee200 it can also help me to know what lens you normally use for birds in flight? For shutter speeds, I like to work at 1/2500second for really fast flying or moving birds like bee-eaters or flycatchers or swifts and swallows. For larger slower birds like pelicans or herons I can work at slower shutter speeds, maybe 1/1600sec or 1/1250sec. I can only use those fast shutter speeds if there is enough ambient light of course, and they represent ideal conditions. I do have a few sharp bird in flight shots at speeds as low as 1/640 sec but my keeper rate of properly sharp images improves when i use faster shutter speeds.

The menu option in the 80D menu is in the Yellow Menu screen "SETUP 4" and the option to choose is the third one down the menu screen "Clear All Camera Settings". Grant, you say the 7D2 has more and better controls. Why then do you use the 80D?

      Hi Tony Lewis, so I feel it is important that I am familiar with as many of the Canon cameras that I think are relevant to the kind of shooting that I do. It enables me to make comparisons drawing on my own experience and also to be familiar with a wider range of Canon bodies which my safari guests might be using. Purely for my own subject matter and shooting style, I choose the 7d2 over the 80D. Hope that helps explain ?

      Cheers Grant, and let me say I really appreciate the work you put in to your instructional videos. I have learned a lot. I only asked about the 80D because I recently sold my 7D and G1X MkII and purchased the 80D as a travel camera with the EF-S 15-85 as a walk around lens. I have the 100-400L lens also and use it for birds etc. I agree the 80D seems a compromise for wildlife however having sold my G1X (compact) I wanted the smallest and lightest setup possible. So far I'm quite impressed. Cheers and thanks.

      The 80D is still a pretty good choice, and you get the benefit of Canon's best APS-C image quality along with the advantages of that swivel-screen and lighter weight for walking around. It is nice to have choices :-)

      To be honest Grant, I went the 80D way for all those reasons. I'm an old bloke now and my knees have seen better days so the articulating screen is a godsend. I'm not so sure though about great improvements in the sensor. I haven't seen much improvement with shadow noise, especially above 100 ISO. I also have a 5D MkIII and dynamic range seems to be neck and neck. Sony still seem to be streets ahead in sensor technology.

      Cannot argue with that Tony :-), Sony sensors are very good. For most of my work though, Canon dynamic range doesn't hold me back as much as their practical designs, ergonomics and AF, and functionality help me :-).

    Thank you for posting and sharing. I make Corvette Z06 videos and just bought this camera for better quality videos and photos. I subbed and liked.
