  • Tonight Show Mad scientist, David Willey, with the help of his friends Ed and Kurt, tear apart a pair of interleaved phone books. It finally takes two 18 wheelers to do the job. This was done for the good folks at Daily Planet. Many thanks to Mark McQuaide for the use of his trucks.

    Makes me wonder if there's a stronger material that can mimic a paper. Use that material as a phonebook and repeat the process. Surely the amount of force needed to beat the amount of friction applied to the book would surpass the amount of force needed to rip the pages apart. Probably keeping the both books intact?

    When textbooks are interlocked, it can be challenging to separate them without causing any damage. Here's a method you can try to remove interlocked textbooks:
    1. Assess the situation: Examine how the textbooks are interlocked and identify the points of entanglement. This will help you plan your approach.
    2. Gentle maneuvering: Start by applying a gentle, steady force to the textbooks. Try wiggling them back and forth or side to side to see if they loosen up. Be careful not to use excessive force, as it may damage the books.
    3. Sliding method: If the textbooks have a slight gap where they interlock, try sliding a thin, flat object like a ruler or a piece of cardboard between them. Apply gentle pressure to create a separation between the books. Move the object along the gap, gradually widening it until the textbooks come apart.
    4. Twisting motion: Another technique you can attempt is to twist the textbooks in opposite directions. Hold one book firmly and rotate the other book back and forth, applying gentle force. This twisting motion may help loosen the interlocked pages.
    5. Wedging method: If the textbooks are tightly interlocked, you can use a small, flat object such as a butter knife or a thin plastic card to wedge between the pages. Insert the object as far as possible without forcing it. Gently pry and wiggle the object to create a gap and separate the pages. Move the object along the interlocked section, repeating the process until you can separate the textbooks.
    Remember to be patient and cautious throughout the process to avoid damaging the books. If the textbooks are valuable or delicate, it may be wise to seek assistance from a professional, such as a librarian or book conservator, who can provide you with specialized guidance.

      Torque wouldnt be a problem. Modern pickup trucks in 4X4 Low are able to spin all 4 wheels on pavement. Traction is the limiting factor not power. And a 4X4 pickup should have almost as much traction as a semi without a trailer as they dont have much weight over the rear tires. 4,000 pounds of force should be no problem for something like a F-450

  • @jimchance5006
    @jimchance5006 Před 6 lety +9

    To all the idiots saying they should've used the back of the smaller trucks,
    Reverse is just first gear. If you floor it in reverse, it will not shift into second, third, fourth etc. if they would've put the trucks the other way around, the wheels would've spun, and it would've shifted to second or third. They used reverse to prevent his because 1st gear has more torque and will get more into the power band without shifting.

    • @ffhjvbuydb78eb
      @ffhjvbuydb78eb Před 5 lety +3

      What in the hell are you talking about? Do you even know? The transmission WILL NOT shift when the wheels are spinning. Ive been stuck before and that's nonsense you're talking about.

    • @mikelin7
      @mikelin7 Před 4 lety +2

      Fox-E (Bonzai) well you’re not correct either. The car will shift to higher gear when tires are spinning. Think of car dyno. When car goes to higher gear the max engine torque is lost due to gear ratio to the wheel. When the tire is spinning you lost all that grip and this lost all the available force applied to the phone book. Semi truck has the weight to weight the tire thus increase the coefficient of friction plus the monster torque engine produces by multiplying the low gear ratio.

    Except for the fact that even though you couldn’t pull it apart either way, the opposing claps are also applying clamping force on the book they are not clamped to.
    So while the friction is still at play, this isnt an accurate representation of just how strong the friction can hold, because the clamps are so tightly pressed against the pages, it’s literally holding down the pages super tight, not just holding by sheer friction.
