- Tonight Show Mad scientist, David Willey, with the help of his friends Ed and Kurt, tear apart a pair of interleaved phone books. It finally takes two 18 wheelers to do the job. This was done for the good folks at Daily Planet. Many thanks to Mark McQuaide for the use of his trucks.

I am actually satisfied to see the books tear apart, that job literally looked impossible to me from the time I got to know about the interlocking book concept.
i have also just taken this same rabbit hole journey and the payoff was definitely worth it
They should use phone books as construction materials
You can.
Rain :(
imagine how tedious that would be
It's like plywood, the HARD way.
They do, it's called Parallel Strand Lumber
I'm equally impressed that the concrete can withstand the friction of the truck's wheels
This is pretty amazing to witness. Never would have guessed they would be so hard to separate
Great video! I find it incredible that the pages actually broke, and are still interleaved! When the MythBusters did this, they declared them separated, which is incorrect.
Mythbusters did the phonebook thing too, I'm gonna watch it now to see if this amount of force really will pull these apart.
So do you now believe me?
@@mad.scientist we bit late 🤣
That would be “wee” laddie.
Do you think we faked it???
What the hell indeed
Who knew it took so much force to tear them apart and cool vid.
Is it me or they could have done this same experiment with 1 small truck and then with 1 big truck?
2 opposing forces wont sum to double the force applied.
We could have Ben, you have the Physics right, it was just that using two made for better T.V. My producer's favorite request was always, "Can you make it bigger?" Thanks for the comment.
if they had 1 small truck 1 big truck wouldn't the big truck just have dragged the smaller truck along, effectively inflicting as much tension as 2 small trucks
@@f.n.8540 I think he meant it would be the same force if you used one truck and tied the other side to an immovable object.
@@mad.scientist Right
yeah that's what I think too @@f.n.8540
So the fiction still held. It’s just the fking papers that ripped. Damn… friction is crazy.
That hostess is a smoke show!! Gorgeous ❤❤❤
Awesome video
Thank you, it was fun making it.
Not the kind that stopped me from smashing Zaya 😂😂😭
Its surprisingly strong
They should also use it for hiking
Makes me wonder if there's a stronger material that can mimic a paper. Use that material as a phonebook and repeat the process. Surely the amount of force needed to beat the amount of friction applied to the book would surpass the amount of force needed to rip the pages apart. Probably keeping the both books intact?
Let me know when you find that material and try it.
The material changes the coefficient of friction tho so it wouldnt really tell us the answer for paper it would just tell us the answer to that material
How much time did u spend on interlacing these two fat books?
It took about six, very boring, hours.
David Willey yea I cant even imagine that
Fat block still happening? Lol
@@mad.scientist so boring lol
@@Dragon-Slay3r i bore you, what would entertain you
Chesus christ, I knew taking these things apart would take a huge amount of strength, but not almost 2000 kilograms of force to do so.
Kilograms are units for mass, force would be in Newtons
0:04 bro 4 seconds in and I already hate life
Myth busters used a tank and it still didn’t work
It ripped at where it was attached like the mythbusters. I bet if you could clamp it better without drilling the book and compromising the pages, it could hold more.
The books were not drilled.
It seems like the strength of the pages is just weaker than the frictiom between them so it's actually impossible to "pull apart" without breaking the book
2 comments? Lol, nice video
My name is also Eddie
Great. I am glad for you.
Done used J B Hunt trucks, want pull it.
What????
well they could connect the books to the back of the trucks(toyota & ford) then it might have worked
Rafid Irtiza Ahnaf 1st gear and reverse have almost the same amount of power.
but back means more traction from the driven wheels so thats what i meant
okay
More like durmaxs and cummins

for what?
Lol no that's that paperclip lol
Are the pages glued together? Why are they not slipping out of each other?
No glue, just friction

That should be school books

When textbooks are interlocked, it can be challenging to separate them without causing any damage. Here's a method you can try to remove interlocked textbooks:
1. Assess the situation: Examine how the textbooks are interlocked and identify the points of entanglement. This will help you plan your approach.
2. Gentle maneuvering: Start by applying a gentle, steady force to the textbooks. Try wiggling them back and forth or side to side to see if they loosen up. Be careful not to use excessive force, as it may damage the books.
3. Sliding method: If the textbooks have a slight gap where they interlock, try sliding a thin, flat object like a ruler or a piece of cardboard between them. Apply gentle pressure to create a separation between the books. Move the object along the gap, gradually widening it until the textbooks come apart.
4. Twisting motion: Another technique you can attempt is to twist the textbooks in opposite directions. Hold one book firmly and rotate the other book back and forth, applying gentle force. This twisting motion may help loosen the interlocked pages.
5. Wedging method: If the textbooks are tightly interlocked, you can use a small, flat object such as a butter knife or a thin plastic card to wedge between the pages. Insert the object as far as possible without forcing it. Gently pry and wiggle the object to create a gap and separate the pages. Move the object along the interlocked section, repeating the process until you can separate the textbooks.
Remember to be patient and cautious throughout the process to avoid damaging the books. If the textbooks are valuable or delicate, it may be wise to seek assistance from a professional, such as a librarian or book conservator, who can provide you with specialized guidance.

18 wheels?
Truck has 2 single wheels in the front, 4 sets of dually tires, and another 4 set of dually tires for the trailer.
y
@@danielpark6031 so then that wasn’t an 18 wheeler
If the pickup trucks had 4X4 I bet they could've done the job.
AWDWaffle what about two cummins
Torque wouldnt be a problem. Modern pickup trucks in 4X4 Low are able to spin all 4 wheels on pavement. Traction is the limiting factor not power. And a 4X4 pickup should have almost as much traction as a semi without a trailer as they dont have much weight over the rear tires. 4,000 pounds of force should be no problem for something like a F-450
The semis have 1100 foot pounds of torque he said. The new fords have 935. Thats not a huge difference, the semis werent even struggling.

What’s a phone book??😂😂😂😂
Something that's very hard to come by these days we found out.

That’s actually sad, I’m sure you know what it is but our generation doesn’t even need a phone book..
dude phone books are useless, you should be happy they were replaced by "contacts" in ur phone.
Rakan El-Haj Daoud they weren’t useless back in the day, and that wasn’t the point I was trying to make
why wouldn't you turn the cars around so they're not pulling backwards?
Why would we?
To all the idiots saying they should've used the back of the smaller trucks,
Reverse is just first gear. If you floor it in reverse, it will not shift into second, third, fourth etc. if they would've put the trucks the other way around, the wheels would've spun, and it would've shifted to second or third. They used reverse to prevent his because 1st gear has more torque and will get more into the power band without shifting.
What in the hell are you talking about? Do you even know? The transmission WILL NOT shift when the wheels are spinning. Ive been stuck before and that's nonsense you're talking about.
Fox-E (Bonzai) well you’re not correct either. The car will shift to higher gear when tires are spinning. Think of car dyno. When car goes to higher gear the max engine torque is lost due to gear ratio to the wheel. When the tire is spinning you lost all that grip and this lost all the available force applied to the phone book. Semi truck has the weight to weight the tire thus increase the coefficient of friction plus the monster torque engine produces by multiplying the low gear ratio.
Mythbusters did it first
Pretty sure someone did it before them, wouldn't be a Myth otherwise.
Except for the fact that even though you couldn’t pull it apart either way, the opposing claps are also applying clamping force on the book they are not clamped to.
So while the friction is still at play, this isnt an accurate representation of just how strong the friction can hold, because the clamps are so tightly pressed against the pages, it’s literally holding down the pages super tight, not just holding by sheer friction.
Wrong
As he said you're wrong
They probably could’ve pulled it apart with the pickup trucks if they were driving forward
Not true, we tried that, didn’t work.

fake video, camera man was missing when the phone book was separated. was not there during the 2nd angle
Wrong Theo, we faked nothing.
then where was the camera man? unless you did it in two takes? don’t get me wrong, i want to believe it’s real, but it’s just that some things are out of place

There were several "takes", in that we shot several pieces, with repositioning between shots. Standard procedure for T.V. All quite real. I'm not sure what you see as a problem.
One single shot doesn’t look at good for tv. They do multiple takes, and then break the book on the final take.
