CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Flash (Sam J. Jones) uses his football moves to put up a fight as they prepare to take Dale (Melody Anderson) away.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.

I remember watching this movie when I won a contest for delivering the most newspapers in my neighborhood. I got to go to the movies on a Saturday with free popcorn and a drink I was 11 years old. Under the seat in the movie theatre was an envelope which I also won some money for sitting in the correct chair in the theatre of all the other kids. What a day
I love bizarre anecdotal stories like this from strangers - it's interesting to me how a film can spark so many varied memories for so many people all over the Western world; each one special and unique in it's own way.
Everything was going your way. Sometimes as a kid you just feel indestructible.
Great story! Sounds like you peaked at the age of 11 though! 😆 Just joking!
"No way!"
*Bill and Tedd being suprised*
this was a birthday movie for me. one of my fondest memories
This used to be the coolest thing when I was 6 or , but wait... it still is
oh yes it is
what? old man burn son 😂😂😂😂
The thing I love about this movie is how unapologetic it is in its enthusiasm. It's not a product of cynicism, it's not snarky or sarcastic, it's not trying to prove how self aware or ironic it can be to the audience so it can maintain some sort of "hip" status.
Is it the cheesseyness
TheyMightBeBricks John, Flash Gordon was the most important figure of our formative years. He taught us right from wrong, good from evil. And that the word 'acting' apparently has an extremely broad definition.
The change in musical tempo when Flash's vision comes back into focus just really crushes it.
Yeah music was pumping in this movie.
@@starcrafter13terran music by Queen
What is soccer? We love football. 🏈 Go flash go!
Soccer is nice too sometimes though lol
@@carmen0075 nah, rugby for the win, football is just grown men, playing a boys game, and refusing to tackle someone because it may ruin their hairdo, or finger nails. at least with rugby you get proper tackles.
R.I.P. Max Von Sydow .. this movie still one of my all time favorites !!!
It's campy but still good movie.
Even the music on this humorous space opera by Queen is epic.
The 2007 version is the best version of Flash Gordon. Although Sam J. Jones did have a guest role in episode 9.
Flash Gordon, The Last Starfighter, Ghostbusters and BMX Bandits. 4 movies I watched over and over as a kid. Still love 'em too.
And don't forget Kidco
Time bandits
Ghostbusters is the only 1 worth if multiple viewings. 😅
Ha ha BMX bandits… I remember that. I think that was Nicole Kidman’s first movie.
Say what you will about this film, but damn the costumes and sets are fun! Whoever designed them must have had the best fucking time.
Defective Turret. Yeah this isnt exactly the movie you take seriously.
Everybody who made this was clearly on a lot of drugs. I saw then i was like 7 years old and i was like really guys?
This movie is very underrated!
@Bob Loblaw I can explain it actually it's because they don't try to be overly serious the films that end up being campy when they try to actually make it serious in up doing badd this one was just fun to watch
I love their costumes, especially Ming's. Such an improvement over the ones in the 30's.
*Ming:* Klytus! What is this canorous chorus I hear?
*Klytus:* I believe it is called "Queeeeen" sire.
*Ming:* Well, turn it off! It's making him stronger!
Marc Liljeqvist LOL!!
"Slaaaaay!"
"At once, my liege!"
*Stabs a random guard*
After Ming was defeated, the people of Mongo stripped most of the decorations from the throne room and sold it to some guy named Snoke.
we have a winner
In actuality, it was really palpatine, and snoke was just an aborted fetus whose identity he stole.
@@Gnostic88 u can thank Rian Johnson for ruining Snoke by killing him in episode 8 which was the worst Star Wars movie ever made
@@Edward_Nebiolo Rian Johnson was just a Mad Dog; Kathy is the one that let him off the leash...
@@Gnostic88 true but she let Rian get his own trilogy b4 even making episode 8 and look how that turned out
I love it when Vultan conks them on the head.
Ha ha
What about where he TRIPS THAT CHARGING GOON AT 1:00! Thing is, this scene is FUNNY yet also relevant to the dramatic storyline - THIS is where the citizens of Mongo get their first taste of defiance and revolt.
Trips the goon is nonchalant is if he didn't see anything happen! lol
I love the sound the goon makes the first time Vultan concks him on the head at 1:25.
Ya know all of that was Ad lib too
1:34 "Match him... like this" (crouches slightly)
Yup, that's some top notch coaching, right there.
😆😂🤣
Even as a kid in the theater, I was like! How does Klytus know about football?
@@bobbystereo936 If he knows about Earth, then maybe he knows about football and many other aspects of human culture - maybe Mongo has its own Wikipedia. :)
@@OnafetsEnovap hmmm! Now he shall promise.
@@bobbystereo936Believe it or not, the Italian dub actually makes Klytus's line clearer (it's my first language) - he tells his men to make a group effort (his line translates to "Get down to his level and work together as a team!")
Makes the hairs stand up on my arms even now.....""Go FLASH go"
Met The actor once at comic Con, London.....the most humble guy ever. He wasn't really aware that he saved everyone of us😉
I still flash jump....
Max Von Sydow was perfectly cast as Ming the Merciless.
John Hintergardt when I first saw this movie I was 5 and he gave me nightmares .. lol I agree though.
Javier Bardem would make a great Ming with that accent.
Max Von Sydow is perfectly cast as anything!
@@NotTheSweat Even Strange Brew!
He was also great as the voice of Vigo the Carpathian :D
Not here because of Ted. I'm here because of the *SHEER* *AWESOMENESS* of Flash Gordon.
You're all wrong. Dale's clapping at 1:47 is the best part of this! Go Flash go!
Absolutely
Hell yeah it is, GO FLASH GO, GO FLASH GO.
Yeah
It's what I remember the best whenever I think of this scene or the movie itself 😂 !
Always been my favorite part
In terms of movies and music, the 70’s and 80’s were the best time in my life, all because of movies like Flash Gordon and bands like Queen. Love this movie - watched it 100 times.
FLASH AAAAAAAAAHHHH HE’LL SAVE EVERYONE OF US!!! -Queen, Freddie Mercury
Emo Queenfan_326 why did you put Freddie’s name and didn’t put the other members name?
I like queen
Thanks for putting “queen, Freddy Mercury” in there, nobody would gotten the reference otherwise!
Soundtrack is a 90% Brian May job
@@ilgiarno hmmm they stopped saying who did how much or who wrote what. It was all simply Queen. No one specifically named.
This was one of the first films I remember seeing with my folks when I was a kid. My little brother also came along and everyone had a great time! We’re sat watching the rich colours unfold in front of us with that booming rock score by Queen! It was just wonderful!
Good points. Colors and Queen both big plusses.
Queen's soundtrack
Lord, why do we have to get old. This was MAGIC when I was a kid.
Check out the 2007 version. It's the best Flash in years!
Easily my favourite movie scene of all time. It’s so ridiculous and so great.
1:06 "Are your men on the right pills?" always gets cut from British television airings (along with Klytus's death face).
Damn, they used to show it when I saw it there.
That's really got to be one of the most bizarre quotes in the history of cinema.
Indeed, and Prince Brain's cursing, too.
Lol Prince Voltan tripping and bonking them on the head then acting like he didn't do anything
Voltan is the Best. He rules the movie together with Ming.
That kills me every time I watch it.
That and the little guy stabbing the one in the butt and stomping his foot
@@ddthewolf Oh yes!
As Prince Barron looks on looking less than amused.
Garish. Cheesy. Over the top and 80s. What's there not to like?
This movie was actually made in the late 70's. And no, it isn't exactly representative of the 80's or any decade fro that matter.
It already had it all. 80s hair, synth music, Queen and so on.
It's theme song, made by Queen
@@Skulldini , it came out in late 1980.
@@StarfieldRailway Probably FILMED in 79. Movies are usually not both MADE and RELEASED during the SAME YEAR.
Brian Blessed's facial expressions make this scene
This is an example of what perfect editing and having the right score can do for a scene. It shouldn’t be this good.....but it’s amazing
One of my all-time favorite films. Fantasy and fun 100%! Oh, and Queen's music on top!
Klytus at 1:30 - Every frustrated sports coach who's wondered what the hell his players were doing. Lol
0:23 Flash Gordon has balls of steel.....how else would he recover from a kick in the nuts like that so quickly.
He was on the right pills.
He was a football player. He was wearing a cup.
@@theolamp5312 This.
This movie is a ton of fun, I gotta say
I know the "yeah" is the great Freddie Mercury but I didn't know that as a kid. It just fits so well with that music change. You know s4!t's about to get real.
A classic case of something so bad... it's good!
I saw this in the theatre when i was 7 years old. I thought it was childish and immature.
@@Arigator2
Man you are more boring than Reys costume from *The Force Awakens*
Yeah, only it was made that campy on purpose!
This is a remake of the 1930's Flash Gordon tv show, and they wanted to make it that way as a homage to the original.
And Queen of course totally "got" the humor and made the perfect soundtrack for this. :-))
I saw it at the theater in 1980. I had just turned nine. I have never loved watching another movie like I loved watching Flash Gordon then.
@@Arigator2 I'm way late to the party, I know, but this needs to be said; you must be a riot at parties, pal, he said sarcastically.
Are football shaped objects just like, the source of Flash Gordon's power? Like he gets his ass kicked until the precise moment he has one, so I can only assume it's like a Thor's hammer thing he has going on.
He’s for everyone of us
Stand for everyone of us
He save with a mighty hand
Every man
Every woman
Every child
With a mighty flash
QUEEN😍👑
When he rolls and takes them all out, I remember thinking as a kid, I really need to remember that move just in case I have to fight a group of people 😅
If I tried that move, I hope that people won't foot-stamp me.
Pure classic. What a gem
Lol Brian Blessed is loving this! XD
There is even an upalumpa hidden at 1:35 ! This movie is golden
This is definitely my favorite scene of the movie!
He's playing some Barbaric game now match him, like this! NOW!
HILARIOUS!!!! Best part is where Voltan, the hawk man, TRIPS THAT CHARGING GOON AT 0:56! Thing is, this scene is FUNNY yet also relevant to the dramatic storyline - THIS is where the citizens of Mongo get their first taste of defiance and revolt.
This is how i did at school when we where playing football xD
you called him a GOON
I think it was more so seeking to emphasize that no one is truly loyal to ming outside the royal court, and everyone hates him and is just waiting for a chance to rise up, and will take cheap shots whenever they can just cause they are so ground-down that they take any small victory they can..... And once again still more plot driven than the last jedi... : I
I love that part too and he tries to act like it was accident
Also props to the little guy that stabs one in the butt and then stomps on his foot!
I wonder if it would have been too much to see a few other species get into the action, tripping up or something with the guards
still better than the last jedi.
Dude, don´t even compare.Flash Gordon is a classic.Almost 40 years and it still rocks.
Hahahahahahahaha. I fully agree.
Better than Raise of Skywalker too
@@raymondsolisjr.1262 much better hahahaha
GreyFensir Wulf Ahh no! This is enjoyable, but no.
Quite possibly the greatest scene ever!
Thirty-one viewers were not on the right pills.
I think they're in critical need of a sense of humor transplant my self. Or they're probably just accustomed to those bland trendy homogenous bloated super hero movies - X Men, Spider Man, Bat Man, Thor, et all - currently coming out of Hollywood, and think THAT's what THIS movie should be like instead.
The Queen Soundtrack was so good, that years later, the producers of DUNE tried the same approach.
THEY,
like the movie itself, *failed*.
Maybe Klytus should execute their trainer.
Its 2020 ......now the count is up to 196
I'd give them the bore worms.
For a movie that was made in 1980, the fashion clothes are just amazing.
I prefer the 2007 costumes. They're much better by far!
I don’t think I have ever seen a campier, cheesier or more ridiculous movie scene...or one that is more pure fun! Camp can be an art form when it is done like this. Long Live Flash!
Topol was perfectly cast as Zarkov. RIP
