- Making progress. Been a grind this week, but its moving forward consistently... takes me about 5-10 minutes to get warmed up in this update, but I feel the point I was trying to make gets clearer towards the end.
I just love the way Devin applies himself and pays so much attention to detail. This is why I've been sticking with this artist for so long. Thanks Dev for the finely polished songs you gave us throughout the years. No two are the same, all are equally beautifully crafted.
That look on your face near the end tells me Powernerd is going to kick my ass into heaven!! 😂 you look so happy and proud of yourself and deservedly so ❤ sending big love as always to you and yours. Enjoy your new week of creation 🤘♥️🤘
Cup of coffee and DT on a Sunday morning hell yeah!
DT has a very different meaning at this point in my life
If you haven't seen it the Coffee with Ola , Devin episode is wonderful
Just wanted to say thanks. I’m 47 outta Cleveland. Seen you after Leaders last summer. As a junkie for couple decades I missed a lot. Music being one of them.
So trying to catch up with you from Vai to now has been very rewarding.
Deadhead might be one the most beautiful songs ever. I love how you have done multiple versions of it.
Anyways sorry for rambling just wanted to say thanks love and respect from Cleveland
You operate on the level most people could not comprehend. Really appreciate you sharing your story and your thought processes. It's really quite remarkable and so appreciated that you let people into your thoughts like this. Thank you!
I am 60 man and I feel the halving of time ever incremently increasing. Nevertheless live is beautiful.
I noticed this even at a very young age. I remember after my senior year thought "but 6th grade was just yesterday.." lol. At 35 however, I'm enjoying getting older but also savoring my time here. We're lucky to be here when we are, with modern medicine and whatnot. Here's to 30 more years, old chap.
I'm 42 and definitely feel this. Time is an illusion after all
@davidpearson6346 it's like that modest mouse song says "the years go by but the days go so slow."
You find out basically everything was a play and it matters how serious you took your role that you think about in death
I love the discussion of lyrics. I heard a saying that stuck with me: "If you don't look back at yourself and not feel some level of embarrassment, then you are probably not growing." If you allow yourself to cringe or be embarrassed by yourself, then it's very difficult to actually progress. Sounds like that's what your process with making lyrics is like.
Thanks for these updates! I hope / presume they are also useful to you ❤🤗
Damn. Thanks for the window.
It's life
It's tragic
It's life
It's magic
Yep!
Introspection on a useful, practical level. Love it.
I can confirm what you said about sometimes having to wreck something that feels almost done. It seems like what feels "90% done" is often just an illusion - in my case it's often because i've had an incomplete vision (or sometimes a vision carried by the excitement over a cool sounding riff or progression) of what i wanted to create. Often i've relied on my ability to "finish it, while i'm working on it and have the momentum". Some things just don't lend themselves to that way of working - i just haven't figured out how to tell if a certain project/piece is gonna be one of those.
god bless u Dev I'm a lifelong fan of your art and could happily listen to your process for conjuring a fart and still learn something! thank u for involving us so deeply in your journey it is nothing short of inspirational!
Great updated! I always appreciate hearing Devin talk about considerations when writing lyrics.
Morning Dev 🫡
I was just thinking back on how intense and wonderful the '22 Copenhell concert was, and wanted to see what you were up to these days. Well, dang! Colour me excited!
As far as I know, Devin doesn't read this stuff, maybe management can fwd a question to him to tackle in a future update. After watching all these updates and hearing about the entire process, the amount of commitment and thought and traveling down the rabbit hole is overwhelming. While a large part of this series has been about the process of making the music, how do you (and those you interview) balance this commitment to the vision/work while balancing/being present in relationship with family/wife/children etc? Cheers!
It’s reassuring to hear that you go through the creative obstacles that I go through working on my art. Been listening to you for years.
Thanks for these updates
Thank you. I love these update videos so much.
I always save a new version of something before I try something wild in the arrangements, just in case it’s a bad idea I can jump back to where I was without any risk. Most of the time it works and I just keep going, but it is good to have a recovery file.
I feel like these updates are part information and learning and part of my Monday mental health check it. Thanks Dev, it's all very valuable.
I'm loving hearing about your musical journey, it has made me think about my own through the similarities and differences, thank you
The point about the campfire songs is such a wonderful perspective for a songwriter. Our first album was written with the opposite approach out of necessity, where instrumental coherence came first and vocals came later. But what we’re writing now is entirely focused on the songs standing strong without all the technical aspects and production. Can’t wait to hear what this process brings you to!
Slow progress, is still progress
I feel the same about how we organize the words 😂 love recreating my sentence to create real emotion for the audience/reader I wish we could collaborate together you inspire me so much it’s amazing thank you 🙏
Thanks for sharing! Time marches on... I turn 58 tomorrow so I hear ya!
Happy Birthday!! 🎂 🎉
Ah, the tapemeasure of time, def feeling it as a 41yo 😅 It´s facinating!
I've been hypnotised by your bridge.
I've done that same thing so many times. Always worth it.
That issue of what to do when you're "not feeling it" is something I've been struggling with-poorly-for the past month. I find it incredibly, painfully frustrating, and I'm only making music for my own amusement. Dropping the realities of a professional recording career on top of that must be an absolute nightmare. I really respect your ability to stare down that frustration and not only deal with it, but turn it into a learning experience.
Good thing you didn't just get completely pissed off and frustrated and trash the whole thing."Halving dinner and taking time out gave inspirational clarity🙂
Thanks for the update ☺️
I can't tell you how many times I've written a better part for an average song that ended up spawning a way better song..."trashing" the original idea has become commonplace for me but I always end up with something better when I do...keep at it, you rarely miss as it is!
Oh my gosh, “Kumbaya” 😂 I haven’t heard that since I went to Catholic school for eight years and we sang it in music class. Interesting chat about riff changes and subtleties. I think as a listener, we can assume the creative inner struggle of the artist is ongoing even after completion sometimes.
"Before you know it its a total mess" LOL!!!!! THis literally happened to me yesterday, I said "I tommy boy'd" it as in that scene in the restaraunt where farley holds the biscuit and nurtures it so hard that its crumbled to bits.
totally unrelated, but man that fuzzy fleece hoody.... I want one.
something i've heard about mosquitos, is that the way they decide which way to fly is random. they have sensors that look for moisture, and as long as the moisture around them is getting thicker, they move in a straight line. as soon as the the level of moisture lessens, they shift direction at random,. and continue to shift at random until the moisture level increases. I think that's kind of a weird analogy for just randomly switching up an arrangement. we sense that the blood is getting farther away, and a random direction is always better than staying the same course.
That’s the biggest hurdle that I run into when writing a song. I can come up with riff after riff in my sleep… but I always get hung up on questioning myself about the melody to use on top of it.
Keep it semi simple Devin.....Very good.
Woah, 2:58.....Wearing headphones, the footsteps had me trippin' that there was someone in my house!!!!!!!

Have you thought about installing wireless units inside your bodies?
I'm currently 3/4 through a build and have almost been overwhelmed wth the technology that's available.
(with some modding), I'm thinking of installing the gubbins of one of those new headphone amp multifx things (the NuX mighty plug pro) and a wireless transmitter instead of/and an output jack.
Imagine the freedom!
These new evolution headphone amps can load IRs, and have so much potential, and their electronics take up such little space, it'd be a crime not to try!
I'm potentially thinking of making it a modular unit.
The wings will hopefully be swappable, with modular elements that can also be swapped.
I'm currently going with a full electro acoustic preamp, a Jimmy Page loom, Seymour Duncan Triple-Shot rings and a varitone with a Q filter.
Without the acoustic preamp, I have 1,532 switching options, it's almost overwhelming, but each option can be dialled in easily.
The varitone takes up many of the variations, and I mostly stick to a few resistors.
I've been thinking about a new pickup design/evolution as well, but that can wait.
Wonderful music in the background.. moody, vaguely spooky.. please release it, at least as a download
Maybe it's fron his DreamPeace project? If so, it's on Spotify
☕️ and Dev
So when do we get a taste of all this power nerd goodness?
Perfection seems to be the enemy of “Done”.
Maybe you need to be surprised by it, though, for it to work.
If you keep applying paint, sometimes you end up with a sculpture.

IS OUR BIRTHDAY ONLY 14 DAYS AWAY?!
Dev I don’t think your IQ is quite high enough (folks, this man is a genius)
Hello Strapping Young Lad. Hevy Devy can you please collaborate with Maynard James Keenan?? Imagine that everyone!! Wouldn't that be something different.
Dev, which vsts can I use to have a 'similar' ambient sound and textures like the one we can hear in the background?
Add like 20 delays and reverbs and play with the dials.
Your method of dealing with the emotional ups and downs of the creative process sounds quite a bit like acceptance and commitment therapy.
Just CLICK and watch…
Love that guitar! thanks for the insight and sharing what you're doing in your recording process, I had the greatest zest for life when I was righting and playing music, and without it my Zestometer is rapidly descending into darkness. I believe now the part quicksand is to play now in my life; and yes, we should have feared quicksand maybe more than we did... czcams.com/video/2UOYX-bRlc0/video.htmlsi=Kgxz1YvTH_ny0rW4
❤😪👌- 😊
Jai Guru Dev
TLDR?
He's calling it quits and going to become a bassist in a country band.
he went to the store.
I'll tell you what you can't bank on, is adverts popping up just when you're telling us we can't bank on something or other!
too bad we cant just get an honest review of this guitar instead of 40 minutes of zzz zzz zzzz
