There already is a version of Phantasy Star 1 with auto-mapper on Switch. It's not a re-master but it's a great version, also has the speedup.
The return of Skies of Arcadia... THAT needs to happen! 😉
I'm sure the picture of you with Vyse is like a new game is coming to the new generation of gamer 😊. So thank you for mentionning it first. I encourage every JRPG fans to play it and to support any return of this game because this is a true gem.
Yea I can't believe Super Derek hasn't played that one he would love it. Very strong cast of endearing characters. One of my fondest gaming memories.
I finally just got Skies of Arcadia on GameCube last year, along with an hd adapter for the GameCube. What an absolutely amazing experience the game is. It just gets better and better as you get further into it. The price is steep for a good complete copy, but it's a more than worthy addition to the game collection 😃
I have some good news, there actually is a version of Phantasy Star 1 with automapping! The Sega Ages release on Nintendo Switch includes this as an optional feature! Sega has also been great about including Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 in several Genesis compilations over the years. Plus, Wild ARMs 1 and 2 were recently made available on PS4 and PS5 with full Trophy support!
Also, if we get remasters of the classic Lunar games, I reeeeeally hope they get new localizations. Wrecking Designs juvenile rewrites were already out of date when they were new, and they've only gotten more painful over time

The list is SO long and even moreso, the list of opportunities for companies to create remastered collections is off the charts. They typically are received and sell well so seeing more of these really seems like a no brainer. The Sky trilogy I believe has to happen now since Falcom and NIS have gone to the trouble to send everything after it to the west. Remastered JRPG collections just seem like a great move for the fans and I would think, financially for most of the ip holders. Lufia is a great choice too. Its especially a great time for Capcom to do a Breath of Fire collection since they have been on fire financially and taking a little risk on the side with that would be fantastic. I vote everything in this vid needs to be done, just do it all haha
Exactly. Many of these could very realistically happen, though a few of the most anticipated are difficult for specific reasons. Panzer Dragoon Saga's source code was apparently lost/destroyed, so that complicates that a ton and with MonolithSoft being a Nintendo subsidiary, a Xenogears remake would be quite complicated (though I suppose it could be ported by Square no problemo).
It cannot be too expensive to simply list some of these collections on digital storefronts and this modern JRPG renaissance makes me think many would sell well (look at the Battle Network sales figures as a comparison). Hope these happen soon!
Honestly I would love a wild arms collection because I feel the series doesn't get the love it deserves. But also breath of fire collection from Capcom and square give us a ogre battle collection of 5 and 64. I'm sure that nowadays the action strategy rpg would go over much better then it did in the 90s.
I would love to see a Breath of Fire collection. And a new Breath of Fire game as well if it is like the first 4.
Out of any of these, I would definitely say the Soul Blazer trilogy. Soul Blazer has a special place in my heart as not only the first RPG I ever played, but also the first one I ever beat. I love Illusion of Gaia too! Although I will say that a new translation could help... While also saying I was less than fooled by one attempt of trying to tone it down. Even as a kid, I knew exactly what was going on!
It's funny you mentioned tactical games because I remembered one I would love to see again. Saiyuki: Journey West. It was the first tactical RPG I ever beat and it was also my very first dive into the storyline of Journey to the West tale! I will also admit to be very biased that it's also my favorite even knowing some things are way different!
There's also Okage: Shadow King. I don't know how I forgot this last time! Not only do I love the story and premise, but I just love the game! My only real nitpick for gameplay would be fixing up at least the battle because it can be difficult to know how to have all of your team gang up on one monster. Otherwise though, I would love to see it come back!
I will admit there is another reason behind these two, Okage especially. It's how I met a very close friend of mine. I remember that I was at someone's house and had borrowed Okage to play on the PS2. My friend and her sisters ended up piling into the room. Not only did we just bond over this game, but we hung out for a whole week they were there! This led to me becoming pen pals with my friend and to this day, we are close!
I like to see a remake to Legend of Dragoon, QoL upgrades mostly. A prequel makes total sense too.
I'd love to see all the Sega Saturn SHINING games and Dragon Force I & II ported with good filters, scanlines etc.
Skies of Arcadia needs to happen. I'm sure as heck not going to Shell out the money for a used copy.
Completely agree about the Quintet/Enix trilogy. More people need to know and experience the greatness!
Edit: I just played through Lufia 2 finally a week or two ago. It's SO good. Do yourself a favor and get to it, I'm tellin' ya! I loved the first Lufia, but 2 is AMAZING.
Definitely check out Lufia II! I got a Super Analogue NT recently and started playing it again and it still holds up super well. Great puzzles, funny writing, engaging combat and just overall one of the best SNES RPGs out there.
Man, most of these dream announcements just make me drool with envy. Lunar, Trails, FF with ATB, Chrono....oh! Don't stop.....dreaming! 🎵
Funny story about the Xeno collection. Had a customer come into work about a week ago to sell all that and the first thing I ask him is "do you know what these are really worth?" Sent a picture to my old boss and he called within 5 minutes and just said "did you tell them what they are worth?" Thankfully I convinced him to keep them. I would've felt terrible giving him next to nothing for a treasure like that. Gotta love Gamestop sometimes.
I'm going to be honest, my favorite announcement was when you said you needed to get around to Lufia 2
As someone that got inspired to play Kudelka from your video (loved it btw) the shadow hearts trilogy would be amazing since I haven't got to them yet.
Supposedly, Xenosaga is connected to Xenoblade now. I haven't played Xenoblade Chronicles 3 yet, but I read an article yesterday about a DLC that offers some connections and teases between Saga and Blade. I won't say anything more since I haven't even played it myself, but I look forward to getting to it sometime.
You should absolutely play Xenosaga when you get the chance. Those games are some of my favorites. There's always PS2 emulation if you want to play the third game without shelling out 300+ bucks.
I would die with happiness if any of these happen. Especially all the Xeno headlines. Only dream announcement I would add is Digital Devil Saga duology port or remaster.
The Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star on the Switch already has an auto-mapping feature built into the game and it also has an easy difficulty option added as well to make it more accessible to modern gamers. You can probably get the game for as little as $5 when it goes on sale in the eShop.
My dream RPG announcement would be for a Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse remastered combo release to come out for modern consoles and PC. Another I'd like to see is a remaster of the Sega CD SRPG Dark Wizard to come to modern consoles and PC. Of course, I'd also want both of those to have physical copies available of the console releases.
I'd be down for all of these.
If we're getting greedy I'd toss in
Legend of Legaia remake
and with the influx of tactical rpgs can we get Vandal Hearts to come back? The PS store only game they put out years ago wasn't bad but the first two were pretty good games. More adult themes, blood splatters, a Shining force like job advancement system.
Also while I don't really want to see a new Phantasy Star game, as I think 4 wrapped it up perfectly, I'd lose my mind for a remaster/remake of the original 4 games even 3.
Great video. Must say I had an amazing time drawing dungeon maps for Phantasy Star I recently (Switch version), really adds to the experience IMO!
I wish we could get a proper English release of Tales Of Phantasia that's based off of the Japanese PS1 version. I also want ports of Rebirth, Eternia and the Xillia games bundled together with all DLC.

Definitely my biggest wish would be to have Dragon Quest 4 through 10 on switch.
if SE ever touch Xenogears and make it complete again with tetsuya takahashi, I think the creator would actually remake the story so it fits with his xenosaga vision.

The Phantasy Star I sega classic collection for switch did have an added dungeon map feature!
But I think those games especially IV would be great with an HD 2-D style remaster. If only for the spell names which make no sense and I always forget what each one does.
The Sega Genesis Classics Collection on the Switch has Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4 as well as Shining Force 1 and 2 and Shining in the Darkness.
I sincerely hope that the creators of these fantastic games take notes from this video and get to work with bringing them back and/or giving them a much needed makeover or rerelease. They deserve that resurrection! 🥰
I'd love to play a bunch of stuff stuck on duel screen systems. A bit harder to port but It'd be great to see dq 8 and 9. Xenoblade X, fantasy life and more on modern platforms.
Dream announcements:
- Patapon Trilogy for PC/Switch with Patapon 3 completely remade to be an actual good single player game (not really an RPG but still)
- The studio behind Celestian Tales re-gathering and making a third game that closes the story or at least continues it
- Laxius Soul 2 and 3 have save porting and start actually dealing with the cycle
- Disgaea 3 and D2 get a Complete edition
Disgaea 2, 3 and D2 for Switch. So the system has all of them up to 7. I always found it weird they skipped porting 3 to any system aside from the Vita.
@@slashinghades7347 I feel they understimate the selling potential of the games 3 and D2 as well as 2.
I forgot to mention Arc the Lad series was really great and currently only on Ps1 and Ps2
In addition to the many great suggestions here, I would love for FromSoft to somehow get the Blood Omen license and reboot that series.
I would love to see the other “project rainfall” titles get the same treatment that Xenoblade Chronicles: Deluxe edition got. Pandoras Tower and The Last Story. Pandoras tower would need some rework to implement a way to play it without the Wiimote, but if Okami can do it, I’m thinking it can be possible. Also, can someone please rescue Lost Odyssey from the Xbox 360??
While I DO want console releases for Sky trilogy and other games, i do wonder about how reasonable it is to want companies to re-release their back catalog on consoles every generation. The fact that certain JRPGS are on PC are great, because they're not "lost"! I wish more JP developers put their old games on PC.
It definitely isnt as fun to collect though, but at least i got the full Chrono Trigger experience for $7 😅

I'm all for releasing versions of old games on modern platforms so we can play them. There are a lot of games that seem really interesting, but are just impossible due to the consoles not being available or because the old consoles don't have digital downloads which makes it harder to get them due to the limited physical supply. I've heard so many things about Lufia, Terranigma and Mother at this point, that I'd love to give them a try.
To add my own Dream announcements:
In the realm of possibility: Harvestella being released on Playstation. It was released last november, so I'm kinda hoping they'll port it over after one year.
Way less possible:
A rerelease (remake or just HD versions or ports or whatever, ANYTHING) of the older Tales games. I really really want to play Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Xillia 1 & 2. The port of Symphonia has shown us that rereleases are in the realm of possibilities. But they ported the game in such a poor state and ported Symphonia of all things that was already rereleased on PS3 and PC. I don't have high hopes for them porting anything that hasn't already been ported :( It's probably something silly, like them no longer having the source code or something.
I just bought a PSP and a physical copy of Trails in the Sky yesterday because that's how I prefer to play it. It cost a bit but I'm so excited to have it accessible to me and actually own it physically. A remake/remaster of the whole trilogy would be amazing to have on Switch as I do most of my gaming handheld now.
The downside to playing on PSP is that it didn't get the updated script that the PC version got. Also, outside of Japan, SC is digital only on PSP, and 3rd only released on PC
@@Some_Random_Guy I know, that's why I'm hoping for an eventual remaster of them on current consoles. I'll probably pick up the JP physical versions on PSP until then just to have the entire saga in physical format. Those are the only two I'm missing.
Aaah... just a sigh on my part. Games like the Quintet trilogy, Lunar, Xenogears and the Xenosaga trilogy, Shadow Hearts or Skies of Arcadia... they' re all too good NOT to be brought back, one way or the other! These are all one of a kind Jrpgs, that have remained unique to this day. To be honest, If I got to choose right now between newer titles or remakes/remastered ports of the games you mentioned, Derek, I'd pick the remakes/ports. I just think game preservation is more important than going blindly into the future.
But... anything's possible, right? I think we are going through the age of remakes and remasters, so some of these games may probably make a comeback someday!
dream announcements for rpgs?
I mean, obviously a ff tactics remake or a sequel would be 10/10 for many of us, and even your "mega man legends" remaster or sequel would be also a must have for me but...
I go back to two rpgs all the time: ff8 remake and a parasite eve remake. we all (ff-fans) saw that ff8 tech demo for the ps2 and it hasnt left us since, its tattooed on our brain forever. that was insane. and YES PLEASE WE WANT IT VERY MUCH! imagine now ff7 remake combat for that as well? wow could be an insane game!
Now imagine a Parasite Eve remake that looks and plays like a Resident evil 2 remake. Taking place inn New York, in the late 90s. Wow! I guess the start of the game with the twin towers might be an issue, but you can put the game early 2002 or 2003 if you want. If the WTC intro scene or them at all being an issue in the backround for New York.
Oh, I see how it is. I was probably the only one to mention Ogre Battle 64 so it gets the could shoulder, eh?! Typical. Nobody gives OB64 the respect it deserves, but it DOES deserve respect, damn it!
One day this game will be remembered. Maybe. Probably not. But I hope so.

Currently playing Etrian Odyssey Origins collection and now I'm just drooling for them to release remasters of the 3DS games. Those games are too precious to be left on old hardware!

Yo Derek, there is a version of Phantasy Star 1 with auto mapping (by options) in the SEGA ages version on switch.
I really want remakes of Shining Force 1 and 2 to expand story for the main protagonists n world, I got into Shining Force in 2018 and personally it's one of the most beautiful games i've played that alot of folks don't know about also it's a great entry series for Tactical RPG newcomers.
I feel we shouldn't get a new Golden Sun because alot of people just because it was THE rpg for the GBA that everyone loves and has nostalgia for.
I've been dunking on alot of old games I used to love or tried others that have been nostalgic for others, It's not to do with game difficulty or controls but their presentation, standard gameplay style can be a bit of a snore fest for alot of JRPGs i've played where we play as the same goody goody two shoes protagonist who roams on green lands to fight some generic villain who wants to become god. You can have some cliche's but I wish there was more diverse styles in JRPGs which is odd to say but there is alot of standard presentations in JRPGs that just make me get bored n go "oh i've played this game before, eh i pass on it."

my favorite announcement that NEEDS to happen....is you announcing you are playing Lufia 2. borderline criminal you havent yet. I firmly believe its the best SNES RPG, above Chrono Trigger and FF6. Obviously didnt have the impact of those two games, but man Lufia 2 hits on every level.
Doesn't the Ages version of Phantasy Star (pretty sure it's on the Switch) have a built in auto-mapper?
A few of my friends have wondered why Falcom won't release an Ys collection. Doesn't even have to be HD. There are so many games in that series that didn't see a proper international release or are locked on the TG16/PCE in relative obscurity to that international audience.
I would love to see a release with Ys I-IV on the TG16, Mask, V, and the PC-88/98 releases all in one place.

Oh man, that could be interesting! Personally, I think it'd be really cool to see SEGA collaborate with Camelot on a new Shining Force game too, since it has a lot of the old staff from Sonic! Software Planning.

@SuperDerek yeah I would much prefer this especially if they make a Shining Force IV. I need Julian & Galm's story to be finished since SF III Sc. 3 had an amazing ending but had multiple cliffhangers.

I think I wrote the Mother trilogy, probably. Sticker Star is the worst Paper Mario. Man, I should have mentioned the Luminous Arc games.
Given the demographic trends in Japan, my dream announcement would be a Shin Megami Tensei Persona game set in a retirement home, instead of this endless stream of games and anime starring Japanese high school kids.

Xenoblade is a completely different series than Xenosaga. They have very little in common. You really, REALLY don't need to play one before the other.

so it seems that Derek is anti emulation, cuz he can play his xenosaga games and then emulate the 3rd one.
is this a big youtuber thing ? yeah i love rpgs and i love my physical games, but im not paying hundreds of dollars for games that will never release again, like panzer dragoon saga or a lot of ps2 games because i never had a ps2 or very expensive ps1 games like lunar.

Thanks Rod! I'm not personally anti-emulation for others'. Especially with games the way they are these days. I just prefer original hardware when possible. Mainly because back in the day I used to emulate the heck out of games, and it killed my drive to actually finish any of them. But when I have a disc or cartridge in a system, and I just put a button to start it up and it plays what I was doing last, rather than being hit by decision overload every time I open an emulator? I dunno, it just seems to work better toward me actually finishing the games. Also, doesn't hurt to have something pretty to show off and hold in my hands on camera. :)

Yeah, XSEED is likely a bit part of why we haven't gotten Sky for Switch yet. I think it might take a full remake by Falcom to break the XSEED spite grip on this arc. :-\
