FOR THE RECORD. And I hope everyone else sees this...
I do not hate Band-Maid. I quite enjoyed their song Domination. I was DISAPPOINTED in this song because I expect greater from them. NOW if you tell me this is their BEST song, then I would question YOUR musicality. But it IS everything I said. It's a simple song to appeal to the lowest common denominator of a fan. A "FUN" song to put out and to enjoy. Challenging? Only if you haven't been listening to music like this for decades (I certainly have been.. )
Do I think that they are performing to the best of their abilities? NO. I do not. Reading in between the lines in a love song isn't that hard to do. Honestly, all of this hate/judgement/and whatever else you guys are throwing at me, makes me not want to react to this band again. No matter how GOOD they are. But you know what? I WILL keep reacting to it. And giving my honest opinions every single time. Because MY humanity is tied to my honesty. If you can't handle the fact that I didn't like ONE song by your favorite band in the world, then I don't know what to tell you.
For context for those of you out there who insist my musical taste is garbage...

I disagree with what you said and, moreso, how you said it, BUT it’s classless for people to put you down personally for it. Back to Band Maid, I think your opinion of the musicianship will improve the more you hear. They play all kinds of styles, some more technical than others.

No one can force you to like or dislike something, and even if you don't like it, I don't see any problem with it. However, when you speak in such a place, there are many fans, so you should consider how you say things and your attitude. I think you all were offended by that.

Yes. I have been playing music for nearly 35 years. And, yes, I typically go back to the classics, when they didn't have all the technology to spice things up. Doesn't it speak volumes that our LAST reaction to this band, Domination, left me speechless? I LOVED that song. But it appears to me that unless I absolutely adore EVERYTHING this band puts out, I get needlessly shamed for everything I am.

For me..Kanami Tōno, lead guitarist and composer, is most impressive musician of the 21st Century. Pure genius as a composer, always compose to the whole band, not herself, playin’ her guitar just what serves the song most. Love it! Magical band, amazing musicians 🔥🤘❤️

Your boyfriend is comparing a hard rock band to a power metal band lol. I like Lovebites, they are friends of Band Maid and attended Band Maid's 10th anniversary concert. Their guitarists are impressive from a technical standpoint but there is nothing original in their music or guitar solos. Kanami, the lead guitarist and writer of all Band Maid songs is infinitely more creative and a damn good lead guitarist in her own right. In my opinion, Band Maid is one of the most impressive and versatile bands I have ever heard. Your boyfriend is entitled to his opinion, however it seems as if he is a bit biased and close-minded.

I am well aware that everyone has their own taste in music. So, personally, I do not care if some people do not like KANAMI's performance. But if that person's level of speaking out is low, it's just disappointing and sad...... that is not for KANAMI, but for you......
By the way, I am also a big fan of Lovebites too, and I am a Japanese who attends almost all of their concerts.

It’s fine to not like this song, or Band Maid in general. Only a small percentage of people like even the most popular bands ever! But to state as a fact that Band Maid’s musicians are worse than Lovebites’ musicians after a couple songs? Even if there’s a way to prove it, and it was true, it’s crass to say it as if it’s a fact.
Plus it ignores the fact that metal is a “show-off” genre moreso than rock-especially how Band Maid does it. Kanami doesn’t think about showing off when she writes songs. She’s thinking of the whole ensemble. Not to mention the fact that her best work is often throughout the song, and not in solos.
I don’t think there are any Lovebites songs Kanami could not play. She chooses not to play that style, where the solo feels as if it’s all about itself, and detached from the song.
Yngwie Malmsteen was once considered the greatest guitar player but, aside from his earliest material, the songs he writes are crap, IMO, no matter how good his guitar parts are. I value quality composition over virtuosity.
The guys in Dragonforce are supposedly very talented. The guitar work hits you over the head, and amazes you. But it’s dull after awhile, and not memorable, IMO.
Every musician I’ve ever heard speak on the topic of talent says that the best players are session musicians that never get talked about… so there’s always someone better than who you like. That’s why I focus on what something sounds like, and how it makes me feel, rather than anyone’s assessment regarding its technical merit.

As a fan of both bands, I prefer Band-Maid over Lovebites all day and every day. Like most old-school rockers I'm a real sucker for shredding guitars and musicianship but I'm a bigger sucker for heavy grooves, riffs, and dynamic songwriting. The problem with songs that are shred fests is the lack of memorable riffs or a catchy groove that sticks to you away from the music. It's like eating candy for dinner sure it is good but it doesn't provide what a hearty meal would. I feel Band-Maid is that satisfying meal. They manage to weave complexity in a way that holds a familiar thread and is spun into a catchy memorable package all while not sacrificing the groove. They are not painted into any particular musical genre which allows them the freedom to explore and access the full musical spectrum to incorporate into their music. Their sound signature is Unique and unlike any other band, you know it's them within the first few bars.
I think if Lovebites were not an all-female band they would not have the same novel appeal because there have been quite a few of those bands in the past like Helloween, Merciful Fate, Savatage, Armord Saint, etc... Bands with equally talented musicians that play in the same style. It is understandable to be enamored with Lovebites due to the fact it is an all-female Japanese band that is displaying such skill and proficiency with their instruments. Needless to say, this piqued my interest as well. But watching and hearing guitar solos that are rapidly executed scale exercises is no doubt impressive. Even this can become a boring display of musical Calisthenics. Being a great instrumentalist is one thing but being a world-class songwriter and musician is another thing entirely. And like many others who have commented on Lovebites, they are worthy of the recognition they have received but in my opinion, they fall short of what Band-Maid offers superior songwriting.
Songwriting is the name of the game more so than one's ability to perform musical Calisthenics. Most of the greatest songs are rarely written by the best instrumentals or performers. Oddly enough this may be a result of being too good at one's instrument to be able to generate the necessary space and dynamics needed to produce the connection on a deeper emotional level. It must be more than flashy guitar tricks and scale exercises. Let's not forget that silence or absence of a note is also an important musical note that lends contrast in creating that dynamic needed to form that bond. Therefore, It falls to whoever is writing the song to create the space or dynamics to allow the vocalist the room to express and deliver the vocal melody in a meaningful and memorable way.
Lovebites deserve to be recognized and acknowledged as an important band in keeping this style of music alive and kicking. But I feel Band-Maid stands in a league of their own. They also possess multiple members who are masters at their instruments but possess an even more important quality of being truly completely void of ego. This quality allows them to create music where the song takes priority over their glory. This is not to say they are void of any complexity or moments where they can display their musical ability. They have plenty of those individual moments where they can shine individually, it's just presented in a tasteful way that enhances the song like adding the right amount of spice at the right moment to that meal.
One important and often undervalued quality is band cohesion and longevity. Both of these qualities along with the freedom from being locked into a particular genre have allowed them to present music that holds a distinct signature of their own while also providing something familiar and memorable. I feel they are an important and special band and deserve to be illuminated.

      Nicely said.

I'm more of a maidiac and I agree that the songwriting of the maids is outstanding. Yet, Wicked Witch was my most played song 2023, and that is a song by Lovebites, really melodic and catchy rather than schredding. I still listen more to Band Maid but Lovebites songwriting is still fantastic with, imo, masterpieces like Swan song, A Frozen Serenade and Shadowmaker, in my view because of melodic choices more than anything else.

The only rudimentary thing I see here, is the boy’s perspective on the guitar. There is no such thing as best, there are just top tier musicians. I disagree with this narrow minded mindset regarding„much better“; much better in what? Complexity, Lyricism, Speed, Emotion, Kontext within the song/serve the song, accuracy, length & endurance, combination of different techniques, originality? There are only top tier players, the rest depends on the parameter you use for a rating: some prefer impressive athleticism where every millisecond counts, some prefer good literature that takes them on a journey and some can enjoy both and more than just one thing. What is for sure Kanami is a great musician and player and very unique, on the tech/speed side I couldn’t do a ranking either M&M, Saki, Yuki, Sakura, Hal-Ca … difficult.
I’m a guitar player myself since 1982 😅, but come from the Jazz side and I did learn more than once, it needs much more than speed and technique - even if you need that too of course - to be truly a great player.

When KANAMI plays a solo, he concentrates on how to make the guitar sing along with the song, rather than showing off his technique. Of course, that may be more difficult than playing fast. It does not matter if it is good or bad, as everyone has their own preferences. I don't think there are that many guitarists in the world who can really make a guitar sing.

Guys, if he prefers heavier and faster songs (ie Lovebites), then World domination and Choose me are very much likely not the right songs for him, that's his honest feeling based on these 2 songs and I think it's understandable.
Imagine if he hears songs like Bestie, anemone or their acoustic songs, he probably dislike them even more, on the other hand, if he hears heavier songs like shambles or aggressive songs in the unseen world album ( warning or Black hole etc) he probably likes them.

Shambles, Warning, No God, Black Hole, Rinne, Different, From Now On, etc. But the problem I see with this guy's reaction (and what I think a lot of comments here are responding to) is that he seems to be judging this band solely on how shreddy they are. And you know what, if that's what you want, that's cool. Go listen to Yngwie or Satch or Eddie or early Megadeth all day long. Lovebites has shredfest solos in a lot of their songs. Her guitar parts and solos are written to support and fit the SONG. And if you REALLY listen to what she is playing outside of solos, you'll realize its MUCH more complex than you seem to think. I challenge you listen to From Now On or Without Holding Back (or even any of there normal sings with the vocals stripped out) and call her playing rudimentary.

The mark of quality of a band isn’t how impossible their music is to play. It’s how happy their fans are to watch and listen to them.
Band-Maid has ruined a lot of other music for me, because the depth of their writing. Like listening to other drummers just play a beat instead of Akane’s constant switch ups feels boring. But that’s not a technicality issue. It’s writing. It’s the band’s bottomless well of creativity, and their effort to give us the best music they can.

"Choose Me" -- a song featured in the Netflix original movie "KATE" and the HBO Max series Peacemaker as BAND MAID, has so many great RnR chops, it's kinda unbelievable. From Saiki's old-school phrasing, cadence and a super soulful vocal at the end; MISA's driving bass, her special riff after Kanami's brilliant, rocking main solo (complete with harmonic pinch), and her pulls at the end of the song that really funks it up with Akane's drumming; to Kanami's original composition, off-beat octave stretches during the verses, and her addition of a second uncomplicated yet super tasty solo; to Akane's unique snare & tom flurry that launches the choruses; and to Miku's octave-down, in & out vocal backup and lyrics... all makes "Choose Me" a throwback rocker that surprised me when I first heard it - and I'll bet most anyone - that they would come up with this western-style, rock 'n roll classic.
Of course, after years later, it's not surprising at all coming from this important band of geniuses who are, along with The Warning band, almost single-handedly bringing back the joy of rock. Here's a great live MV of "Choose Me" that's not quite as punchy do to the mix, but still good: czcams.com/video/HcqitbXgigU/video.html Thx, Rob & Steph!

I would like to see the Gaijin Guys comment on this video.
All of them are experienced musicians, and has tried to learn it. It sounds very "simple", but Kanami runs complex chordstructures. A Lovebites solo might have more notes pr second, while a band-maid song got more chords than Lovebites, who in the verses stick to the same. Kanami usually switch riffs during the song many times.
Also.. it's 2 different genres. Which demands different feel. We know from early on that she was capable of shredding. Like on 2016 song "Alone", but never "overplaying".
Later she brought out the feels in the ballad "daydreaming" (2018) and "Blooming" (2019).
Sooo.. you might not like her style of playing, and prefer M&Ms typical shredding.
But to claim she's "basic"?? Jeeez....

Precisely. The first obstacle for me with Lovebites is Asami. I do not like her style. I thought I could get past that with the great musicianship. And while the technical abilities are obvious, the catchy riffs and melodies just aren't there for me. Some times a simplistic song with 3 chords is all you need .

I definitely disagree with your comment that Saiki's voice isn't metal enough and also disagree that Kanami on guitar isn't a good guitarist. I'm a die hard Maidiac because Love Bites with the "operatic metal"; Nemophila with the screaming; Baby Metal with their, well, baby metal all don't work for me. But I think that by dissing Rob over his comments is out of line, in my honest opinion. It's totally unfair to him.
Hey, Americans, whatever happened to freedom of speech? I'm Asian and we don't have the same 1st Amendment principle that you have, yet we are able to accept that Rob (sorry if I got your name wrong, sir) has a different take, if only for this song. To his credit, he is prepared to listen to more BM songs.
To be fair, Rob, perhaps you might want to hold back on your opinion that the Love Bites ladies are instrumentally more superior after you have listened to more BM songs.
Try Freezer, Moratorium (live), Puzzle (live), Take Me Higher (live), Turn Me On (live), Hate (live), YOLO, Blooming, Unfair Game, Non-fiction Days, Puzzle, Onset, From Now On, Without Holding Back, Awkward, Don't Be Long, Giovanni (instrumental only version), Rinne, to name a few.
When you listen to BM music, one should not approach it with a view on metal music or even hard rock. This is a super versatile band that composes and arranges their own music led by that lead guitarist, Kanami Tono in collaboration with her band mates as a Team thing. Lyrics are mostly done by Miku Kobato, the rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist.
If I dare to make comparisons, then I'll find their predecessor equivalents in Pink Floyd, Queen, The Beatles in that they will compose and perform whatever it is that inspires them. Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, Jazz, Country, Ballads, Pop, Latin Rock, they do it all. Such is their versatility. To be honest, I don't think I can say the same for Love Bites and Nemophila, et al. After several songs, you'll realize that they sound the same. But not Band Maid.
They have about 140 songs from over 10 years of being together with no member changes. They're no longer simply band mates, they're sisters by now, if you care to follow their amazing genesis and subsequent journey over the years.
For interesting compositions, try Blooming, Secret My Lips, Awkward, YOLO, Matchless Gum, Spirit, Gion Cho. For beautiful melodies, try Smile, Start Over, Bubble, Endless Story, Anemone, Daydreaming.
Final fun fact, their founder and rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato (or the pigeon as she calls herself) started off as the lead vocalist and couldn't play the guitar at all. She later realized that her vocals were not strong enough for the kind of music they were playing and recruited a lead singer to take over. Meanwhile, she started learning guitar from Kanami, the lead guitarist and composer-in-chief. Today, Miku has evolved into an awesome rhythm guitarist. What humility! THAT is an AWESOME LEADER!
By now, you might begin to understand why their legion of loyal fans are so passionate and protective of them and hence you've been receiving artillery bombardment after artillery bombardment for your comments. I do not condone these attacks but you have a better understanding of why.

These ladies are every bit as talented, and one of the only groups that I've bothered to actually purchase full albums for in over 10 years. Band-Maid isn't a power metal band - so the guitars aren't going to sound like Lovebites BUT what you are going to get is a wide range of creative compositions where all members get to shine. In Powermetal the guitarists try to showcase their abilities in each song....Band-Maid is trying to just make good songs that don't all sound the same. Some songs don't even have a guitar solo while others are all solos. It's called taking your talent and being creative. If you don't like one song, there is always another that will suit you. Guys, relax. He’s just not a fan of catchy rock music. He’s a power metal guy. That’s fine.
I think Lovebites is basically unlistenable for me. I agree they are excellent at their instruments but I find it tedious and dull. They don’t do anything particularly interesting for me and the speed at which they play their guitars isn’t my jam.
But that’s just my musical taste, and it’s not everyone’s. I’m happy for Lovebites and their fans that enjoy their music.

Songs of Band Maid you will probably like:
Hate? (Live), Blackhole (Live), Blooming (MV), Without holding back (MV), from now on (MV).
Guys, don’t recommend their poppier or slow songs.

He prefers the kind of music Lovebites produces. Hardly the biggest crime in the world. I prefer B-M myself. I still appreciate the hell out of Lovebites. I will not dream of opining of the technical musicianship of anyone in either band though because they're all clearly bloody good at what they do which is making music that resonates with people. Something most musicians, much less complete tone deaf oafs such as myself, can only dream of achieving.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I disagree with several of your points, but then again, you don't know anything about the band, yet. Two songs are not enough to understand who a band is and judge their worth. Please, continue on this BAND-MAID journey. I'm curious to see what happens with the next reaction.

I am in no way trying to defend the guy here. But it is kinda ironic that some of these comments here are proving his point about toxic fandom. Some are demeaning towards Lovebites in comparison to Band-Maid and you are not doing anybody a favor with this (I love both bands). Such behaviour just reflects badly on the band(s). It is not a competition! Everybody can dislike music or this or that band, it's fine. But the least you can do is show RESPECT to the artists who put their hearts into what they are doing.

It's not uncommon for a fan to get hot under the collar if someone doesn't like one of their favorite bands song. I'm laughing. If people had always liked the same music, we would still be listening to people beating on logs and grunting. lol That said, try this one...........czcams.com/video/ZpAYnVJX9CY/video.html it may be more to your liking. BAND-MAID doesn't live in a musical box.

I don’t think it’s about him not liking the song. I’ve seen several reactors say they don’t like a Band-Maid song and the responses are usually just recommending songs he might like more. I think it has more to do with the feeling that he was being dismissive and disrespectful in regards to their talent, especially after only listening to two songs.

@@davidpinney4091 Hey David, I was only trying to lighten the mood. I am not defending his criticism. I agree, he was over the top with his judgement of our maids. Quite simply I think BAND-MAID is the most creative band I have heard in about 30 years or so. That said, he is allowed his opinion no matter how insulting it is.
