  • A few years ago, everyone was claiming Fortnite was dying, even though it was making billions. Why were people expecting it to die, and why hasn’t it died yet? The truth is, it cheated death multiple times.

      I think it also has to do with the fact that Fortnite's online presence has almost definitely been on a decline. There's no arguing with the Google Trends graph, and plenty of Fortnite content creators certainly don't get the same amount of views. So when you see people talk about a game less, you assume it's "dead/ dying". That plus Content creators mostly just recycling video ideas, clickbaiting or straight up lying these days, and Fortnite's presence in the wider internet hasn't been the same.
      But even though not as many people talk about it, the game itself and it's playerbase is just chilling.

    As another video regarding Dead Games put it, Fortnite has fought very hard to keep it's position on top of the gaming market. Whenever it sees a threat to it's game, it works REALLY hard get a solution. Right now, for example, they're working on an upgrade to their creative mode system to allow players to build creations in Unreal Engine. Add in a system to search for and view these creations/ maps, and you've got Roblox with better graphics and (hopefully) better creations.
    Epic are now trying to turn Fortnite into the Metaverse and if you ask me, I'd say that'd be a better option than Facebo- I mean *Meta's* version.

      Also, if Fortnite's plans to become the Metaverse go well, I'd imagine Epic can make an insane amount from Fortnite, especially since they can earn money from pretty much anyone with an internet connection, not just the gamers.

    I’d say because it lets you do more than just shoot a gun. And it does it better than its competition. Using memes and viral videos as their inspiration for emotes was a genius marketing idea. And their physics are so smooth, the dances and other emotes look natural and not awkward like the CoD emotes or other games. The fact that their creative games add variety like deathruns, escape rooms, races, horde mode, etc etc…it’s hard to get bored with a game that keeps giving, especially with new seasons and their collabs with popular shows/games - yet another genius marketing move.

    The bottom line here is that there are way too many games that focus on the competitive aspect of gaming, so much so that games that used to be casual, like Call Of Duty, became extremely sweaty. The increase in competitive shooters or switches to competitive gaming leaves a huge empty void that is the casual audience, the majority of gamers that would come back from school or work, plug the system and play to clear their minds of the things in life. Epic Games saw this and decided to tackle that player base instead. That’s just my 2¢.

    They've been very strategic. I could see this as a casual player. I was tired of the high skill ceiling and constant maintenance of the game. Most games when you learn how to play them and come back after months, you still know how to play fairly well and it only takes you a bit to reach your mastery a bit. Fortnite on the other hand is a game that you could miss out on a week's gameplay and return a good chunk of halfway back to being a total noob. I was backing the P90 meta when it came out because shotguns were reining king (and were unchallenged after that for nearly 3 years).
    I felt myself quitting in season X with how wide the skill gap was. Competitive hyoe is good to start with but are you going to keep your small population of elites happy or are you going to shift your focus to the casuals which is less promotion but more revenue from your existing base.
    Then come chapter 3 with 0-builds and that was the final puzzle piece that kept the game afloat. People could now better translate their skills across from other BR or FPS games and not have to worry about this whole new dimension of building. It became more Hunger Games which is what BR is intended to be.
    Chapter 3 marked the end of a 2nd era. The time when most vets of the game moved on and let the new gen of people enter. I could see it in my games with the changes to how build-fights went and the general skill/sweatiness of opponents.
    Each chapter is a new era. However I now worry there will be a new potential shift. The same way BR was invented to save STW but ended up putting it out of business, I worry the focus on Creative will now stretch thin the resources. BR is too popular overall to abandon like STW, but Creative is rising fast enough that they have to put a significant amount of focus on it. So much so the BR players are getting frustrated about being force fed Epic's Minecraft/Roblox hybrid of a creative gamemode.

    Something to point out here - it is true that Tencent has a stake in many many video game and entertainment companies around the world, but there are also levels to this - owning 14.5% of pubg is just below the significant influence level for IFRS accounting standards of 15%, amongst other factors, meaning that they may just be treating companies and games like PUBG as an investment on paper like most of us treat our stocks
    That said on the other hand, tencent is a company with so much sway and influence that talking behind closed doors to both companies to can the lawsuit is definitely a high possibility.

    Good video, but you're missing a few important points:
    - Fortnite has always been (and continues to be) competitive-geared, with very few (but prominent) key aspects to keep casual players in the game - almost EVERY drastic change was heavily requested by the competitive side of the community, NOT the casual side. The casual side is hardly listened to at ALL. The main thing driving that side of the player base is cosmetics. This is coming from someone that's been highly active in most aspects of the community since Ch1 S2, and a creator in said community. The SMG buff was done FOR the competitive community - along with MANY more competitive-geared changes at the launch of (and during) Chapter 1 Season 5 - however, all these changes (including increased building / editing speed and reduce timed delay), have inadvertently made the game LESS skill-based, despite Epic making the changes to please the competitive community - the game no longer requires any true skill, planning, or strategy like it once did - and the competitive players LOVE that. In fact, Chapter 2 Season 1 was designed to be incredibly simple so that they could focus on competitive, and that's everyone's biggest gripe with that season - EVEN competitive players. Fortnite was always intended to be a social game, not a competitive game - and that's why competitive will never truly be competitive, and that's where the true problem lies - they're trying to make it something that it's not. The true downfall of the player counts in the community from 2018-now has always been, and will always be (until something changes), casual players leaving the game due to the game becoming too competitive - despite competitive players being hardly 10% of the player base, and you can put the blame on what I stated earlier for that.
    - With your comment on epic earning less when "swapping to be a social game", you failed to take into account the spendings that were subtracted from those earnings. 2019 was the year of the Fortnite World Cup, and Epic spent more money than they EVER have before on promotions, collaborations, and assets that year. That's why the earnings APPEARED low, but they were very likely higher than 2018, when you subtract what they spent. The change to Chapter 2 happened at the very end of 2019, so that argument is sorta moot, especially when you compare it to the earnings and absurd amount of collaborations and promotions during 2020. You also have to factor in the absurd amount of employees they had to pay when developing Chapter 2 during 2019. There was a whole movement talking about how overworked the Fortnite team was. These changes weren't last-second based on earnings - they were planned almost a year in advance.
    Other than that, this was a good video!

      i started playing it again cus they brought the old map back but not enough to keep me. Game is no different than it was before i quit in c2 s3. Theres no point even trying to get into the game if your new to it or playing it for the first time, everyone is pro players. Itll take years to get even close to that skill level & its not fun in the slightest. Took me less than an hour to quit this shitshow of a game again 😹 i wont regret missing the og season, just cus it has the good map does not make the game good again

      @@updownleftright883 I completed the entire season and what not and finished the pass out and all the levels. Putting the game down now because honestly... its no better for me than counterstrike.... or any other game...
      Fortnite to me is that one game that you come back to every few years. I grinded from when i started (s2-s3) to season 6 and then sort of just quit. Came back interchangeably season 7-X and then never really touched it again. Didnt even know about blackhole thing but then I saw chapter 2, gave that a try for 1 season, quit, came back next season, quit, and now all of a sudden its chapter 4 or chapter OG? How did 2 chapters go by so fast when 1 chapter took so long? I dont even know. I just miss season 4 not because of nostalgia but because of what the game felt like. Double pumping and everything...
      I am good at building too.. I can edit decently and I even kill those sweats with all the skins and badges and whatnot showing they are chronically online and shit in 2v2 fights and what not. I'm not bad but... The game is either you fighting AI or you fighting tfue. There is no inbetween. There is no randomness fortnite had in season 4 where you could be fighting varying skill levels and couldnt predict losses or wins. Now if my health goes below a specific number in a fight i know if its lost or won already. Its sad how the game only got more competitive and less fun.

    from someone who played in september 2017 fortnite was a really fun game absolutely loved it, i don’t play it anymore for me it’s just boring i don’t have the same feel for it anymore, i also believe the game is still alive because there’s a whole new player base, i would say the majority of the OG player base is probably gone or rarely plays anymore, 2017-2019 was for me the best years for fortnite i absolutely loved the old map and the old textures and the best feeling of waiting for the weekly update to come out, thankyou epic games!

    To me, Fortnite always has a way of bringing me back in after a month or two of not playing. The subtle mid season changes, new game modes, and social opportunities are one of a kind.
    I have to say my favorite thing though is the fact that you don’t need to pour money into it to enjoy the full experience. You buy the battle pass ONCE, and if you play it, you will have more than enough vbucks for the next season. It’s awesome. No other game does it like Fortnite.

    Not gonna lie I played during the popular build phase and stopped playing in 2019 because it was getting way too competitive. About a year ago my friend wanted me to play no build and I got back into it because it felt like a whole new game. Being a casual player now I honestly enjoy hopping on for a few games of no build and being able to enjoy it without being destroyed by TTV sweats.

    WOAH buddy got stop you when you brought up double pump. That shit was broken beyond belief. Also the only reasons SMGs became meta was fortnite tried so hard to make the tac smg relevant in the meta of double pumps (since they didn't want to remove that) however once they conceded smgs were busted.
    Either way the reason fortnite won't die is because its well established and is incredibly unique. You don't get the gameplay loop in other games.

      As someone who doesn't really play many other games that others call "Live Service games", I've always found the stereotype of them being "Barely functioning/ playable games that's more focused on making money than actually being a game" weird. Every other live service game hardly updates their own game, but focuses heavily on their monetization stuff. Meanwhile Fortnite does both.

      @@TheEpicGalaxy21 you say that you are “someone who doesn’t really many other games that others call ‘Live Service games’ “ yet, you claim that Fortnite presents a functioning playable game with working monetization. I agree that it does both very well but, I’m trying to understand why say that you claim to not know much about the competition yet, praise Fortnite for their efforts.

    • @TheEpicGalaxy21
      @TheEpicGalaxy21 Před rokem

      @@gcharles3065 It might just be my bias but from what I've heard/ understood, the general consensus on Live Service games or just modern games these days is that they're all just lazy made products that are more interested in your wallet than being fun. Buggy, unfinished, full of predatory monetization practices, all that sort of thing.
      And with Live Service games that have stuff like Seasons, Battle Passes, and such, it seems like aside from adding slight changes/ additions, the seasons don't really change all that much to the game beyond a different battle pass and season name.
      Whereas with Fortnite, every season seems to completely go all in with it's theme. Medieval season? Half the map has medieval themed locations, medieval themed weapons and items, a battle pass with some medieval type stuff, etc.

    • @gcharles3065
      @gcharles3065 Před rokem

      @@TheEpicGalaxy21 But, does their increased effort justify what they are doing. In my opinion, Epic makes possibly the most in the entire gaming market by being the most predatory in the Gaming market. Fortnite has Exclusive Battle Passes, Fortnite Crew, and vaulting of item shop cosmetics to increase their “value”. With this new chapter I also noticed they got rid of season long weekly challenges (As in challenges that would get added over the season but, could be completed at any time during the season). However, I also noticed they allowed people to now buy battle pass levels past level 100. Because of how there is now no season long weekly challenges they want you to play even more now during the beginning and middle of the season rather than the end. Or pay for more battle pass tiers and/or buy Save The World to get more of the XP necessary to get stars so you can acquire everything.

    • @TheEpicGalaxy21
      @TheEpicGalaxy21 Před rokem

      @@gcharles3065 First of all, they actually reverted that change of Weekly quests only lasting 1 week. They're back to lasting till the end of the season now (Though all the quests that previously weren't season-long are still gone).
      Also, as I've said in the other comment, compared to other games I'd say Fortnite probably does the least predatory tactics. Most other "Predatory/ Live Service" games do exclusive battle passes, and item shops that change regularly. So since pretty much every "Predatory" game has that, that kind of puts Fortnite and those games on an equal level of bad-ness on that front. Not exactly any worse than any other game out there.
      I just think Fortnite's probably one of the least predatory among the popular "Predatory Live Service" games. I'm sure there's some game out there that's probably somehow doing the Live Service model without resorting to being 'evil'. But so far, Fortnite's probably the lesser of many evils.
      That plus it's honestly still a really fun game in my opinion. I just don't really care/ mind for all the cosmetic stuff beyond the Battle Pass (which I get for free anyways).
