  • The Kindle Oasis used to be my favorite device to recommend for anyone buying an e-reader. However, today in 2022, the Oasis has become outdated, and there are better options available. The Kobo Libra 2 is a great alternative for anyone willing to leave the Kindle ecosystem to try something different.

The thing that bothers me most about the Libra 2, but I haven't seen any other review mention yet, is that raised edge on the 'handle' side. In previous Kobo generation, the entire handhold side was angled to make it easier to hold. On the new modles, there is only the very edge that is raised. I have found that, when using the Kobo for hours at a time, that edge creates a very uncomfortable pressure point on the thumb. It was so bad I found myself often holding the device by the *narrow* edge instead! The Paperwhite has been a much more natural and comfortable device to hold.

How would you compare performance? I’ve seen comparisons between the Libra 2 and the newest Paperwhite, and the kindle seems to be considerably quicker when navigating and turning pages. I had an Oasis which got stolen so thinking of switching to the Libra 2, but I wouldn’t want it to feel like a downgrade.

I received my Kindle Oasis ( 10th generation) about two weeks ago and it has been one of the best investments I have made in my life, not only to read everywhere but on top of that I save a lot of money I download all my books for free from the internet, upload them to my Kindle and voila
Whereas before whith regular books I had to pay for them individually like everyone else , a kindle is more practical and way cheaper in the long run

  • @nerdanalog1707
    @nerdanalog1707 Před 2 lety +13

Both of these e-readers are great, and the choice comes down to preference. Here are other things to consider :
Before I got my Kindle, I did a lot of research and one thing that stunned me was the life span of the Kindle vs the Kobo. I saw a few videos in which Kobo users stated that they woke up one day and their Kobo refused to work and they had to replace it. Whereas, I saw videos of people still using their first gen Kindle. I don't doubt that Kindle oasis may have the same problem, I just didn't see any videos when I made my choice.
Since I'm not one to change devices so long as the one I have still works (I have an iphone 5), I went with the better quality finish.
For me the page turn buttons are a must, and them not always working on the Kobo is a straight no.
The USB-C isn't a game changer for me. I charge my e-reader maybe once a week, so really I have no issues with this.
Finally, since I move around with my Kindle and read in different places at different hours of the day, the automatic temperature control has become a feature I greatly appreciate. It's a shame the Kobo doesn't have it.
As for the eco-system, this is where I had issues with Kindle as it is a closed system. Yes, one can transfer any books with 3rd party apps, but it is a bother. With the Kobo, this isn't an issue. This is where I find the Kobo shines over the Kindle.
Finally, there is the ethical choice. And this it where it pains me to have a Kindle. But I read in English, French and Spanish and the place that has the biggest collection of e-books is still Amazon.
Whether one has a Kobo, a Kindle or another type of e-reader, the objectif is to read. As long as that is possible and enjoyable, go for it, regardless of the brand.

I had no problems with my Kobo Aura H2O, so I'm giving it to my husband. I also have a Kindle paperwhite and had issues with the new software update and had to do a factory reset, because it wasn't syncing properly. it seems fine now. Amazon in the US has a 30 day return policy for both Kindle and Kobo readers so I decided to try both and keep the one I like better.
The Oasis is more comfortable to use one-handed due to its shape and lighter weight, but due to its slipperiness the grip I have to use when reading in bed requires inverting the page turn button directions, the setting for which is buried seven levels deep in the menu.
The Libra 2 is somewhat less comfortable to use with one hand but still good enough to do so, and grippy enough in any reading position to always keep the same button settings. That combined with its much sharper screen made the Libra the device to keep for me.

the Kindle Keyboard, the first one I bought was fantastic and I feel that every Kindle I have had since is inferior. It had page turn "buttons" on both sides of the screen; the top ones to go forward and the bottom ones to go back. It was brilliant to navigate and so easy to organize my books. The Kindle Paperwhite I have now is OK but a pain if I want to check on facts from another book and accessing Collections is a nightmare+. Kindle should go back to the beginning.

I do like the Kobo Libra (as I've mentioned before). I did play around with the page turn buttons and they "flip" the page no matter where I push them. So maybe QA/QC is letting some poor quality buttons slip through.
My big issue is that it still randomly goes to sleep when I'm reading it. I know for sure it isn't because I've pushed some button accidentally. It doesn't happen often (about 7 times since Dec), and sometimes it'll come back on again by itself before I have a chance to do something. My suspicion is that it has something to do with the sleep cover activating sleep mode from the back.
The ecosystem isn't an issue as I don't plan on buying anything from Kobo. I get enough books from the library, and my Amazon books I've already run through Calibre so now I can convert them for reading on any device I choose, not just Kindle.

I was wondering if you had forgotten about the Paperwhite 5, but then I checked the date on this video. I guess the Libra 2 made some kind of sense before the PW5 came out.

I wonder when Oasis will drop the price knowing they are selling a premium product that isn't their best product in there line of Kindels. That or they will have to revamp it to make it better or discontinue it all together. I still love my Oasis and wouldn't want anything different but it isn't the best one. I have to have the buttons and to be honest the metal design is nice but who notices it when you have to put a cover on it because it is so slippery. Lol What do you think will become of the Oasis in the future? Love to get your thoughts.

Honestly, I think Amazon will stop making the Oasis like they did the Voyage. They'll probably replace it with something else. I hope I'm wrong, though!

Do you think Amazon secretly bought Kobo and plans to upgrade Oasis by adding features of Kobo (and eleminating Kobo competition at the same time)? I’m speculating because Amazon buys companies routinely and Kobo is now being sold on Amazon, which is strange (except if it’s because Amazon bought it and is in process of integrating).

Kobo was bought by Rakuten so it's technically a Rakuten subsidiary. I don't think Rakuten will go through a divestiture in the near future. I'd say this is unlikely.

What? Oasis is the most ergonomic ereader. I tried paper white, but it’s terrible compared to oasis.

Had the libra 2, had to return it, software was too buggy, the OS didn't feel cohesive and the store to me is a joke with its suggestions and presentation. Also the cheap creaky plastic (had 3 different libra 2's) and those annoying rocker buttons (vs the oasis ones) just turned me off. Stuck with the new PW instead, also plastic/rubber, but much better on the build quality imo.

For the price point, I’d consider getting the larger Kobo Sage 📏🤔🧐 But the Oasis 3 and Libra 2 is an apt comparison. I had to get both since I have large manga libraries in both Amazon and Rakuten Kobo. I also have a medium-sized manga library in Barnes & Noble. And, yes, I have used up all the internal storage in all 3 32GB devices 📚📚📚😎👍🏽
HOWEVER, all my audiobooks are on Audible and 99% of my 400+ e-books are on Amazon Kindle 📚😎👍🏽

Is the small battery not a concern in the sage? I received it few days ago from amazon but returning it and gping to get an android BOOX ereader. Unfortunately cannot open it and return it here in japan. Must be sent back packed and new.
