    I don’t care about these terrible places of work it must have been hard and hellish for the workers. I do however have great respect for the workers who broke their backs in these places. Thank you for sharing your story with us Sir.

    My mum and dad first met there as workers in the mill. My Grandad lived round the corner in Jerveaux Crescent. I actually watched it burn down, another landmark of inner city Bradford sadly lost to 'another fire'. My Dad left Drummonds after he realised he could make more money labouring even though he was an overlooker. Knew a couple of firemen who fought the fire, said they thought they had it under control until the situation went downhill very quickly.

    I remember the day after the fire, Bradford City were playing at home so me and my wife called into the Barrack Tavern to meet up with friends. Such a devastating sight to behold as we stared at the destruction through the windows.
    Now even the Barrack Tavern is no more but when it was still open, I always use to marvel at the magnificent building as I was enjoying pint before the match and usually another pint and my sorrows after the game. I would still marvel at the magnificent building. Fantastic images. ❤

      Hi mate , absolutely right.
      That area is not the same anymore. A whole chunk is missing from the skyline. Appreciate your comment 🙏

    One of those days we remember where we were and who we were with that day, I rescued a burnt pigeon chick a few days after and raised it. It was underweight, bald and burnt. I was about to break it's kneck and end it's misery but thought I'd give it a chance. It flourished and joined a flock of racing pigeons in Wyke allotments. That flew over my house twice a day 😊 wonder if the owner ever found out he had an extra street pigeon amongst his pedigree lol

    Your video reminded me of when I worked at Playspace, the childrens organisation based at the end of Lumb Lane. We built adventure playgrounds and had events all over the area. Perhaps you have come across people who are now your age who remember those days..? I am referrig to the mid seventies when I was a student teacher..!

      Maybe someone involved received a generous insurance payout, same as with Lar ry Silvers tein in 2001. Completely unforeseen and with no prior knowledge I am sure! 😏

    old mills burn so fast because for maybe 100-150-200 years a man would be going round every day oiling all the moving parts of all the machines and each day a drip of oil would fall onto the wooden floors from the previous days oiling.
    Mill next to my brother set on fire and collapsed in about 30 minutes.

    • @BradfordThroughTheLens
      @BradfordThroughTheLens  Před 23 dny

      Funny you mention that , I was reading about the arson attack of Dalton Mills , Keighley. It was in the local papers.

    • @rosewhite---
      @rosewhite--- Před 23 dny

      @@BradfordThroughTheLens Arson attacks are usually to clear the site for development. Look at the Haworth mills fires.

  • @rosewhite---

    The money of all those old mill families is now still in untaxed trusts and their descendants live in idle luxury down south.
    I lived in Mirfield and when local mills shut down we said the owners had gone to retire in Bognor Regis.

    • @BradfordThroughTheLens
      @BradfordThroughTheLens  Před 23 dny +1

      I never thought of that 🤔
      Thanks

    • @rosewhite---
      @rosewhite--- Před 23 dny +1

      @@BradfordThroughTheLens one Mirfield family had mills and other businesses for 200 years and then just upped and went down south as being rich they wanted to be with other rich to go horse racing at the Derby, Henley regatta, London opera and shows, Cowes yachting, quick trips to Deauville and other places in France.
      West Yorks is boring!
      Remember the old mills that had big carved stones with names like J Smith and Sons, Established 1979, 1810 etc... they would have been investing money in gilt edged shares and trusts for decades and live very nicely!
