Canada's Shame: Residential schools, unmarked graves, and the search for justice | People & Power

  • On October 27, 2022, Canada’s parliament unanimously recognised the country’s residential school system as genocide. More than 150,000 Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their homes between the 1880s and late 1990s, and placed in distant schools where they were stripped of their identity.
Officially, more than 4,100 children died at the schools, but it’s believed many more lost their lives while in the government-funded system. At least 1,300 potential unmarked graves have been identified using ground-penetrating radar at just four of the 139 residential schools nationwide.
Now, new revelations are emerging as investigators search the lands surrounding former residential schools across the country. People and Power joins teams as they try to seek justice for the thousands of children who went missing and looks at the long-term consequences of the system.

The whole thing was essentially a cash grab, as MILLIONS were earmarked as compensation. No one is saying that nothing bad ever happened to anyone in residential schools.
In ANY type of boarding school bad things can happen due to the intrusive nature of living in a school 24/7 without the normal balance of a regular home life with parents and siblings. However the narrative that is being sold to the world is faulty.
For one thing, in situations where children were living in romote locations, residential schools were often the ONLY option for schooling. Unless the children were to remain living in the native communities indefinitely some form of schooling was ESSENTIAL.
Also, it is absolutely true that native children ( and adults) often died of diseases that affected them more severely then their non native counterparts.
The problem arose when claims of massive amounts of dead children being secretly buried was made without any actual evidence. Stories passed down from one generation to another are not evidence of anything, but are at best hearsay and at worst myths.
Because of the current politically correct climate in Canada and a rush to label the situation " genocide", without properly researching it people were and are afraid to dispute it for fear of being labeled " deniers".
The fact is that NO BODIES have ever been found in any of the sites in question. NOT A SINGLE BODY AS OF NOVEMBER 21ST 2023.
I absolutely believe that some situations such as the current one in Gaza (13,000 dead and counting) are GENOCIDE. The situation in Canada however is not genocide, but simply an exaggeration of events with the goal of compensation and a permanent excuse for any and all wrong doing by native peoples.
For the benefit of those outside of Canada , Canada's native people enjoy incredible and in many cases undeserved preferential treatment. They pay no taxes, get premium health care and other benefits and have the privilege of a special justice system. They are in no way forced to stay in a specific area ( unlike the peopleofGaza), and are taken care of by the government far better then the average Canadian.
Those brave few who have spoken up to say that their residential school experience was not negative are silenced by their leaders, as compensation is the goal.
For the most part I love Al Jazeera, and don't really blame them for getting this issue wrong, as I am sure most Canadian journalists are not experts on life in Quatar, and could easily get things wrong about the history and culture of the middle east.
But the fact is that the Residential School issue has been greatly misunderstood and used for financial gain.
Google it and you will see what I mean.

As is so often the case, history is judged and criticized from the comfort of plush offices by academics and politicians who not only have no empathy for the conditions of the past, but who are too over-fed, under-conditioned and spineless to have survived even a month in the era they are so eager to condemn. Who on earth are we today to criticize these early Canadians while we currently tolerate, if not support, gender dysphoria, puberty blockers on minors, transgender women in young girls' washrooms, open drug use in our cities, and allowing our schools to tear children from their parents' trust? Add to this the amount of mis-information, dis-information and blatant lies perpetrated on the indigenous schooling / unmarked graves issue - we today are every bit as, and more, evil and inhumane than those predessessors we so sanctimoneously judge. "First cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." And shame on Al Jazeera for gullible, irresponsible and untruthful reporting.

I first learned of this system from an episode of the Anne of Green Gables series "Anne with an E". In one episode, a young girl was forcibly taken from her native family and imprisoned in one of those schools. When she escaped and returned home, men armed with rifles hunted her down and brought her back. As the story went, Anne and Merila were confronted with armed guards when they tried to retrieve her.
I was shocked to learn that these incidents really happened, and in large numbers. I was even more horrified to learn that it took place in the U.S. also.

The lies are unbelievable! Years ago I met knew several guys who attended residential schools. Every one of them told me they had a good time and mostly played basketball when they were at the school. Now they talk about the painful memories and keep looking for more government money. Truly disgraceful what has happened with the truth. The gaslighting of the public is an epic travesty.

@@phank.s.4052 what other "important issues" which in turn doesn't affect their autonomy?
Russia is an asymmetrical federation in that republics have their own constitutions, official languages, and national anthems, but other subjects do not.
The republics also originally had more powers devolved to them, though actual power varied between republics, depending largely upon their economic importance.
Through the signing of bilateral treaties with the federal government, republics gained extensive authority over their economies, internal policies, and even foreign relations in the 1990s.
However, after the turn of the century, Vladimir Putin's centralization reforms steadily eradicated the autonomy of the republics with the exception of Chechnya. The bilateral agreements were abolished and in practice all power now rests with the federal government. Since the termination of the final bilateral treaty in 2017, some commentators consider Russia to no longer be a federation.

Exactly the same social engineering, by exactly the same organization, caused Jewish children in Venice to be taken forcibly from their families by the Catholic Church and raised by its clergy. One well-known example is the man born Emanuele Coniglione, known to us by the name of the priest who brought him up, Lorenzo DaPonte. DaPonte wrote the Italian words to Mozart’s operas; the Church has been employing these techniques for a very long time. The Canadian government obviously knew where to look for the requisite expertise and funded such “work” by the Catholic Church with tax dollars. The Toronto public school system during the 1950s and 1960s engaged in much the same business, except that the priority was to raise Protestants; children weren’t removed from families. Between kindergarten and eighth grade Toronto’s elementary school teachers were pretty solidly evangelical Christians, so any actual educational materials were relegated to only half the mornings. Daily “opening exercises,” including: singing God Save the Queen, then Oh, Canada, then, optionally, The Maple Leaf Forever, then the Lord’s Prayer, then Bible readings, then more hymns designed as riddle songs to further reinforce Bible teaching, accounted for the time before recess. That’s five mornings every school week between the ages of five and thirteen; you do the math. After eighth grade, the Canadian military took over through high school.

How would you feel if you were told that your language was of the devil, your songs, your dances, and your color of the skin. The bible was twisted to fit the churches.
