  • Reuben and Scott Parks (back from our Long Range series some time ago!) join Jimmy and Mark to discuss the topic of making your rifle fit you. This is a broad topic that can really go in a lot of different directions - proper stock/chassis choice and setup, proper optic setup, and probably most importantly - a good understanding of the fundamentals of marksmanship and plain good shooting. Scott also talks natural point of aim and the fact that shooting a heavier recoiling rifle can often times immediately point out any shooting fundamentals you’re doing wrong or have gotten a little lazy about.
    As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

    When I started shooting the first rifle was 308. The recoil felt really bad. 10 years later I shoot 30-06 out of an 3.6kg rifle and I don’t flinch at all. Now 308 is the low recoil gun and 30-06 isn’t bad anymore either. You get used to it soo fast 🙂

    This podcast has brought up some self re-evaluations for my fundamentals. I learned how to shoot as a very slender framed youngin on a 1903 Springfield. I’ve felt like I haven’t shot the same since that gun went down the road even with lesser recoiling cartridges.

    You can have your stock cut and put a adjustable link to pull butt pad. They can adjust up to 2 inches

    Ok , ill do it. Get an adjustable lop stock. Start at an extreme end : shortest , shoot it , adjust the stock a little longer, shoot it, etc, same with the cheek riser.

    I had another thought that almost died of loneliness. The natural point of aim. It works really well for target shooting at any distance. But if you are hunting, about the only place you can get a practiced point of aim is if you are hunting the same deer blind. If hiking through the woods, or even in a tree stand, you may not have the perfect and relaxed stance.
    Granted, Jeff Cooper says to not rely on off hand shooting, to always go for a supported position (even a near by tree will do,) but, again, you may have just seconds to prepare.

    I was trying out some shotguns and ARs recently and found that the shotguns with iron sights felt effortlessly to aim while the ARs with iron sights hurt my neck a bit , I do have RA and that could have limited the mobility in my neck , so I looked at the guns a bit and noticed the ARs had straight stocks whilst the shotguns have offset stocks . Makes me wonder if the shotguns are just designed to shoot iron sights and not ideally comfortable with a scope and the ARs are not really intended for iron sight shooting but maybe they are really comfortable with a scope or maybe one just needs a stock tailored to their body style to shoot effortlessly and comfortable ?

    • @dustang5.O
      @dustang5.O Před rokem

      That’s almost exactly how it is. I wouldn’t say the AR was designed to shoot with a red dot/scope, it’s mostly that it’s more comfortable if you aren’t doing your cheek weld right. Instead of tilting your head to accommodate the iron sights, move the gun up your face some to move the iron sights to the same position the red dot would be. Also, you should look around and find a butt stock that looks more comfortable. I had a rifle with a scope that sat too high for comfort so I looked around and ended up buying an AR stock by FAB Defense that has a cheek weld that piece that can rise or lower or even tilt one way or the other.

    01:05:18 I saw a documentary on sniper school for some Ranger cadets. They work in teams and the whole day is given to rifle set-up. the basic rifle is the Army version of the Remington 700. So, they spend plenty of time prone building up cheek rise gradually. Scope setting for proper gap of eye to ocular. Some of the time is just like what is advocated here. Close your eyes. Open. Are you still looking at or aiming at your target
    So, what I learned, also, is to set up the rifle to you based on how will most often shoot it. For hunting, I have yet to find a spot for prone and where I hunt, that doesn't work. On public land with a camp chair and a tripod, it is most like being at the range with bipods on a bench, so to speak. The other most likely position for me hunting, since I am on public land and having to hike through the woods with rifle in hand or on a sling is off-hand. So, I also practice that. Off hand shooting with the idea of still being no worse than 1 MOA at 100 yards.
    So, I have gotten really spoiled with adjustable stocks. Why not? Even if all you do is sit at a bench at the range and send a few 20 round boxes down range. Make it comfortable and effective.
    That being said, in my little town is a gunsmith who can literally build you a rifle from the ground up. It will cost a pretty penny but you have everything designed to you.

      I have been wanting to get into hunting and I’m a pretty sporadic guy. Instead of going cheap I’ve been heavily planning on getting my feet wet with a 257 wby mag with a cheek riser. My only concern is what if the stock doesn’t fit me or something. Is that really a thing or is today’s new generation of shooters just spoiled with the options but in reality it’s not going to matter as much as long as you are comfortable with the firearm and can properly take recoil?

    • @ronws2007
      @ronws2007 Před 3 lety +1

      @@tylorrose6260 Well, I think that is a really good chambering you have there. That being said, comfort is what you make of it. If a standard or traditional stock fits you best, so be it. And you can add cheek risers. Or, as I have found out better, By what you want that is already built. So, my Mossberg MVP has adjustable cheek and I added a thick slip on recoil pad. A very accurate rifle, 1/3 MOA at 100 yards. But it is heavy. I hunted with it, though. Possibly, it is better for bench rest or setting at the side of a field for varmint hunting a corn field.
      So, now, I have 7.65 lb AR-10. The Windham Weaponry R16SFST-308, with a Diamondback Tactical scope. And changed the telescoping carbine stock to a rifle tube and buffer and put on the Magpul PRS Gen III stock, adjustable cheek, length of pull, and cant of the cushy recoil pad. Having to learn to shoot again. The trigger is mil-spec, so it is a smidge heavier than the MVP. So far, that pull works for me. And totally comfortable to carry, shoulder, and shoot.
      So, you could take that .257 Wby Mag and put in any adjustable stock. Boyd's has an At-One adjustable but check with them. If not, check Magpul. They have different stocks to fit different actions. Remington 700 clones and more. And don't forget to check out Weatherby. They may already have a model that works for you.

      Thanks Ronws, kinda helped my confidence in getting my feet wet. Same approach as I had getting my first handgun. Get something I think I'll be at best at chances are I'll like it and if not theres still shit to try out there like there's alot of companies that make crazy advanced stocks it's just a matter of getting your feet wet and just going with something before you settle or scale down or up

    • @ronws2007
      @ronws2007 Před 3 lety +1

      @@tylorrose6260 True. And given time, your tastes may refine and change. Others stay the same. My handgun is the S&W M&P 9 mm and it has always felt good and handed right because I bought the range kit that includes 4 palm swells so that you can fit the hilt to your hand. Rifles, on the other hand, is where I spend more money. First, the Mossberg Patriot .308 Win as a hunting rifle and I liked the look of it, even though it is a poly stock. And it kicks like a mule.
      Then a Windham Weaponry M4A3 Dissipator in 5.56 x 45 mm NATO. Shoot that one right out of the box, no adjustments and the iron sights are intuitive and great for 300 yards or less, which is what it is meant for. Then the Mossberg MVP Long Range 308 Thunder Ranch with Kuiu Camo. Adjustable cheek, heavy wood stock, heavy bull barrel. And then the R16SST-308. And a few days ago, I ordered a Mossberg 590A1 Magpul edition tactical shotgun 12 ga. with 2.75 inch shells, you can have 8 in the full length tube and one in the chamber.
      That is okay, too. Pick what you want and create a budget for it. I could find cheaper shotguns but I am getting the one that I want and will keep for a long time.

    • @ronws2007
      @ronws2007 Před 2 lety

      @@tylorrose6260 So, an update that goes further into the fitting of a rifle to you. That can include changing stocks. I migrated my Mossberg Patriot .308 Win into an MDT LSS Gen 2 Chassis, folding stock adapter (so I can fold it out of the way to remove the bolt for cleaning) and the SCS buttstock. Added to that a Pachmayr slip-on for the 60 rounds I shot at the range. It has adjustable length of pull which is not not so needed since the folding adapter adds about 1.75" to the LOP. Adjustable cheek, which I do need because I put on a Vortex Venom and that needed the 1 inch tall rings on the full rail I put on (after having removed the original single mounts and 1 in rings for the Crossfire II BDC that was on there.)
      Now it is comfortable and even with a warmed up fluted barrel, it is still at around 1 MOA. And most of that is me. If I had a lead sled and a full table, it would be tighter. I use an indoor 100 yard range with video monitor at the 100 yard end but the table or shelf is not very large and most times, the butt is not supported on a table but is totally in my shoulder, so every breath, every pulse introduces an error. You have to shoot between breaths and heartbeats. That rifle is so light, even though the chassis does add weight.
