    Cold Steel Warhammer
    The War Hammer was perhaps the ideal weapon for use against a knight encased in plate steel! The heavy hammer head could crush the strongest suit of plate with just a few blows, and the back spike could open that armor like a can opener!

    Anyone else notice that every strike her performed was pretty much perfectly placed (anatomically) to kill with a single blow? The first strike to the 15th C. armor was a direct hit to the eye. The second was a perfect shot to the to edge of the helm allowing for the dramatic bend in the armor which would prove fatal. The chest blows were perfect for heat and lung shots... I wouldn't fight that man unless I was defending my family.

This one's basically got a pickax handle socket, while I forged mine all in 1 piece, but in case you're wondering about practical uses for swords, and polarms, in the modern day? Okay, automotive scrap, and demolitions. You can pry a steel security door off with one of those too, just not quickly, or quietly enough for say Breaking and Entering. For commercial buildings, where they don't care if you throw out the security door? Yeah, you can pry it off the hinges with that, if you know what you're doing, and we're talking about doors designed to not be pried off the hinges.

    The number one problem I have with this video is that maille and plate were meant to protect against slashing weapons primarily. Plate armour does offer more protection than maille against weapons like a war hammer but was still fairly vulnerable to the concussive force a hammer(or mace, club sword hilt, etc.) generates. The war hammer came into it's own as plate gained popularity because of it's ability to defeat armour and it's design reflects that.
    Still an excellent product.

      the accuracy of the armor in this video is questionable, but percussion weapons (ie warhammers, maces, flails, poleaxes, polehammers, etc) were the go-to anti-armor weapons at the time. Unless you're striking with the pommel or crossguard of a sword, blades are not getting through plate, not even chainmail.

      @7dayspking Před 8 lety

      Vylvan You're right but percussive weapons are significantly overrated by the HEMA community, they are actually legal at *full weight* in the IMFC, M1 Medieval and BOTN...despite these being full contact medieval armoured competitions with a knockdown or knockout rule. Despite this injuries in these sports are lower than in Professional boxing or Mixed Martial arts and lower than sports like Rugby Union or American football.
      Percussive weapons aren't the kill many people present them as, they're great at disorienting opponents and many combatants/contestants do get concussions or are sometimes even outright knocked out in the arena.

      Actually, it's not as hard to pull out as barbed spikes. And considering the gladius' iconic shape was so that the thick, triangular point made it easier to pull out, perhaps a similar shape for the spike would give you the same ease.

    • @ChaosSolak
      @ChaosSolak Před 7 lety +2

      The problem isn't that you can't get the spike back out. The problem is that you need to put lots of oomph in it to try and hit ONE opponent, who will SEE the hit coming and counter you easily. Even if he doesn't, you'd be quickly exhausted after swinging like that a few times. Also, such wide blows while in formation would endanger your allies on your left and right. War hammers were certainly awesome mind you, but unless the opponent was letting himself get hit, you wouldn't be able to perform such strong blows.

    • @ttk2704
      @ttk2704 Před 6 lety

      @orangejoe204 Před 6 lety

      War hammer doctrine says you should attempt to bait your enemy into committing fully to an attack with all his momentum, then you stagger him with a quick blow to the face or legs, allowing you to get in your first medium-power swing from the hammer. Always aim for arms and legs, as they're much bigger and easier to hit and a solid strike = crippled = finish him off at your leisure. Once you've effectively crippled either an arm or a leg, you can take a few seconds to line up an accurate, full-power swing with the crow's beak aiming at weak points (the face shield and/or helm sideplate near the temples). And yes, pulling it out takes a bit, but if you need to quickly turn to face a new threat in those 5 seconds, you can always drop it and pull your backup knightly sword instead.

      OK...but a WAR Hammer is the same as a "Strike" Hammer. Both sides are Hammer Heads. A full war strike is from the holding the END of the 4 ft Hickory Handle. For then the Hammer can go into another strike or defense position. This is according to Icelandic Lore. To prove readiness, and to make a dedication to a Hammer God, one must hold the Hammer (8lb head or the old 9 pound head) straight out with one hand, and recite a dedication Edda. Hold that Hammer straight and strong, (That is in the Edda on Education and Information Track now) for approximately 5 to 6 minutes without wavering. Hold NOT part way up the handle but at the END to prove one is strong enough to even HAVE a war Hammer. Again, this from Icelandic Lore.

      Albert......Yeah, holding a war Hammer (and this guy held a sledge, nit a strike Hammer) 3/4 up the handle would mean no defense OR strike was possible. AND all he could do was make a hole in some armour over cardboard???? War Hammer strikes take off heads, body parts. Maybe swinging it like a basball bat (bad swing by the way) did not have force. In a batttle, even an exhibition, that swing would be blocked by breaking his handle, the rest of the strike would have mostly removed his head. One learns interesting stuff when dedicating to a God who's main fame was with the HAMMER.

    This is actually not a very good review of the warhammer because it's done uncorrectly.
    The fact the spikes pierces through the plate is matters not (unless it pierces in the head). Spike was't meant to hit the plate because it gets stuck in armor and one can't remove it quickly - and the fact the armored guy is wounded doesn't mean he's dead and thus such a guy with warhammer is in real danger when his weapon gets stuck.
    The spike is meant to attack spots unprotected by plate but not plate itself. That is what the hammer is for - for attacking armor directly - not the spike. And even it would pierce a real armor there would be at least gambeson to protect the user and try to have enough pierce power in your muscles to pierce through all of these.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Second thing is that it's taken out of context - in medieval soldiers and knight were trained how to use their armor and they knew if they were to stand still like that wooden bar they'd be smashed so they moved the same direction the opponent's smite would to weaken the effects of the hit.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    And lastly why don't You say what type of mail armor is it? There are two kinds of mail - butted chainmail which was invented by theaters and reconstructors because is cheaper and faster to make but is very weak armor for a real battle. And the riveted chainmail is really good protection and that warhammer wouldn't destroy the riveted chainmail unlike the butted chainmail. A riveted chainmail is even 10 times stronger than a butted chainmail which is evidently used in this video. And again this mail is not put on some moving target but on the hard still wodden bar - not how the armor is meant to be used. Something which can protect someone movable would not protect a still target.
    It's same problem with the plate armor - they don't say it that plate armor is made of regular steel or the hardened which was used in armors in the medieval and renaissance.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    And in the and the warhammer was useful against armor but not so much against unarmored or lightly armored foe.
    This video doesn't give a correct picture of warhammer usage in history. I'm glad I cleared it out in this comment. :)

    people saying things about "cardboard" and crappy armor... first, the hit was in chain mail, metal rings made to stop or at least weaken sword strikes, every knight used that under the armor... and about the armor, this hammer is based on the German Warhammer, a weapon created EXACTLY to hit full heavy armors... and the hit on the head and the chest were the most feared injuries on that time: the strike on the helmet would make the already small gap (used to see and breath) to be smashed, blinding and preventing the enemy from breath (so if the guy could take out the helmet he would be an easy target for a second strike or, in most cases, the helmet would be damaged also in the lock, suffocating the enemy); the strike on the chest was to prevent the diaphragm to expand (heavy armors had that extra space because of that), also suffocating the enemy in its own armor... it was such a terrifying weapon that knights started to go back to light armor so they could evade hammers... and this german model was the scariest and most successful hammer ever made, and one of the few that survived after the heavy armor era

    • @hitokijb
      @hitokijb Před 10 lety

      and people talking about if it was a real person inside a heavy armor... if that person was sane, it would run
      heavy armor could not resist this type of impact and was too heavy to evade hits, using a shield could also easily break your shoulder... so a heavy armored knight or foot soldier would fear way more a war hammer than a sword or axe, and they did, to the point of really fleeing the battlefield

    • @ivanlagrossemoule
      @ivanlagrossemoule Před 10 lety +9

      Urs00 They were so scared they moved on to maximilian armour and even heavier armour sets.
      By the way, the armour used in this video is only a replica made to reproduce the visual effect of armour, not the mechanical properties.
      Armour sure as hell isn't as easy to dent or damage as you think. It also protects from such weapons much more effectively than you've been going on about.
      Even with the most effective weapons of the kind, you still need an effective blow to hurt your opponent, and only a perfect blow will kill him. That requires alot of skill and practice to do in combat.
      Meanwhile an armoured knight with a sword still has the upper hand against an unarmoured one with a war hammer.

    • @hitokijb
      @hitokijb Před 10 lety

      ivanlagrossemoule first, I know this is a replica u.u"
      second, this was the lightest model of hammer available in that period, and was preferred because it was light AND could do damage to heavy armor. Now it was funny the scenario you created, a knight with full heavy armor against someone with no armor at all; OFC both would have heavy armor, making the sword useless and evasion almost impossible; and because the armor got too heavy, it was even easier to damage, a bigger hammer hitting a solid and heavy armor would get the enemy out of balance, could drop him on the ground, and the hit on the chest would be extremely easy and deadly... the war hammer was feared most in the period when the heavy armors existed, that is a fact, and it is a fact that they went back to lighter armor to avoid hammer hits

    • @ivanlagrossemoule
      @ivanlagrossemoule Před 10 lety +4

      Urs00 Why the fuck would both have been wearing heavy armour ? You know armour was very expensive and how well armoured anyone on the battlefield was depended on his own money ?
      A knight would obviously be wearing armour, that doesn't mean he would be as well armoured to the point of having a complete set of gothic armour. And then you have other classes of fighters...
      Evasion ? This isn't a video game. And swords wouldn't be useless : half-swording.
      And that light armour thing is simply wrong. Polearms and war hammers existed for centuries. That means apparently people took centuries to be scared and still produced many advances in armour technology.

    • @hitokijb
      @hitokijb Před 10 lety +1

      ivanlagrossemoule because knights would use that, knights had heavy armor and you can only kill them with a hammer... they were knights, and foot soldiers would also have armor as thick as they could get, since in this small period, it would be crap, but the idea of even poor soldier not using armor is stupid and only shown in movies...
      evasion and balance are part of martial arts, both in Asia and Europe, knight knew martial arts, even poor foot soldiers had access to pictures that would teach movements, bases and how to use weapons, and evasion is important against a weapon you CAN'T defend...
      if you don't understand physics and history, it is not my problem, there were a time were the armors got too heavy, the hammers were design exactly to be used against it, and the light armors came back, is historical fact, you can see at 14th century and after how the armor got smaller in the battlefield
      just talk to me when you learn about history, before that, I will ignore you
