without doing research, I started renting a Selmer oboe for band. I joined an out of school band soon after to get more practice, and when the principal oboist saw mine, she was shocked and quite upset. I have faced challenges, such as lacking a low Bb key and having a leaky-sounding C# key which is unavoidable (as Erica mentioned in the video), but by the time I learned i needed to get a better oboe, I've already been renting this one for quite some time. OF COURSE, no matter what oboe you have your hands on, the practice in the instrument is going to be very useful, and you will be able to apply it to your future oboe.
I will end it on this:
Even if it's more pricey, do not get a Selmer oboe if you plan on playing it for a while.
Selmer is great when it comes to other woodwind instruments but it's always better to get an oboe from a company that specializes in them.
I hope I've saved someone out there!

I played on a selmer 1492 for SIX YEARS and didn't even really know how bad it was until I went to college. It wasn't my primary instrument, but I went to one private oboe lesson because I was having a really hard time in a non auditioned ensamble. As soon as I got my instrument out and played some scales the profesor called the equipment library, had someone bring me an oboe with a full conservatory key system, explained the differences, and then mostly sat back and watched how much my tone improved over the next 45 minutes or so. It's still insane to me how prohibivley expensive instruments are and how much of a difference a good one makes!

Turns out Loree have gone down hill, unless you’ve got an old one. His custom is just sooooooo much better, crazy. I have a 60+ year old Gordet oboe that is, as far as I understand a full conservatory oboe (it has all the keys, including the third Octave key), but it doesn’t have the B flat resonance key. What am I missing here? Is this a relatively modern innovation to help improve the tone quality of the low B flat? Also, I’ve seen a rather new and helpful innovation in oboe key work adding key rollers for the pinky keys on the bottom joint to help with going from E flat to D flat. Have you heard of this?
