NOBEL WEBSITE DISCOUNT CODE: eryno
Thanks for this, I've been wondering why the discount code didn't work. :)
The discount codes didn’t work and I also tried this one
@@personperson5456 Hi there- the discount code eryno will work. Hope this helps. Happy shopping.
@@erynoft No, because when you go to the Nobel website, it takes you to Miller when you add the item to the cart. From there it tells me "Code "eryno" does not exist!"
When I saw the title I was just like, "Pffft! Impossible!"
Hopefully it helped find the best option for you and your oboe journey. Oboes are not inexpensive but these are most of the options available. :)
very informative. i played the oboe from 6th to 12th grade. Stopped in college (idk why) i miss it now, i am 28 now, and trying to refresh myself on basics, thinking of getting back into it
Colleges give MAD money for someone to play oboe. That was a mistake.
without doing research, I started renting a Selmer oboe for band. I joined an out of school band soon after to get more practice, and when the principal oboist saw mine, she was shocked and quite upset. I have faced challenges, such as lacking a low Bb key and having a leaky-sounding C# key which is unavoidable (as Erica mentioned in the video), but by the time I learned i needed to get a better oboe, I've already been renting this one for quite some time. OF COURSE, no matter what oboe you have your hands on, the practice in the instrument is going to be very useful, and you will be able to apply it to your future oboe.
I will end it on this:
Even if it's more pricey, do not get a Selmer oboe if you plan on playing it for a while.
Selmer is great when it comes to other woodwind instruments but it's always better to get an oboe from a company that specializes in them.
I hope I've saved someone out there!
Lucas Rojers I play a Selmer right now and have been for about 6 years now. I’ve been running into a lot of issues and now I’m really looking for a new one since it just doesn’t sound good anymore :((
So basically, the composite oboe is all the sawdust and chips from making a wooden oboe glued together to make a second instrument.
Sounds like a winner!
Wow such a beautiful sound with her reeds. She must take high dedication with each one!
Wow, oboes are very expensive! They are a relatively small instrument, but even the most rudimentary of beginner models are almost 2,000 dollars.
Especially considering that that's a plastic instrument.
@@alexvertikov4069 It is a wood composite. It differs from a plastic instrument in tone colors. Yes, musical instruments are expensive. Especially instruments that require such detailed work to manufacture.
The best oboe is the Gabriel's oboe :)
LOL! I see what you did there. ;)
*slow applaud
Excellent! You are making me want to try playing oboe. It was also interesting to hear the tonal differences in the instruments.
I Love a Good Sound Clip Comparison, too! You will have to let me know how you like playing the oboe. :)
thanks! just what I was looking for. :)
I played on a selmer 1492 for SIX YEARS and didn't even really know how bad it was until I went to college. It wasn't my primary instrument, but I went to one private oboe lesson because I was having a really hard time in a non auditioned ensamble. As soon as I got my instrument out and played some scales the profesor called the equipment library, had someone bring me an oboe with a full conservatory key system, explained the differences, and then mostly sat back and watched how much my tone improved over the next 45 minutes or so. It's still insane to me how prohibivley expensive instruments are and how much of a difference a good one makes!
I play on an ag f loree all wood and it sounds and works great. Yall should look into a loree and co.pare the sound of it to the "wood composite" oboes you have.
Thanks girls. Erica, I enjoyed your demos very much. Very informative. I am a former clarinetist THINKING of picking up the oboe but, whew, $2000+?!?
i love your channel because i play oboe and my band teacher just got my bassoon in and tomorrow imtaying after school for like an hour and a half to learn bassoon
That's great! You will have to keep me posted on any upcoming video requests. :)
I hope you keep up the oboe! There are such good teachers on CZcams if you need help! I wish youTube was a thing when I was starting out
Yassss Thats my Teacher
Erica is a total rockstar! :)
Double reeds .oboe's !sweet sounds.
I don't play oboe but i play saxophone and i know how frustrating it is when a reed fails 🤦🏽♂️ it is the worst
I understand
:)
No you don't a double reed is much different then a saxophone reed
Its worse w oboes
Its awful theyre like 20 dollars 😭
I play violin and flute so I don’t need to worry about that!😏
Im definitely planning on playing oboe in college but im going to start late in 9th grade concert season so thjs definite help since ive been saving for a long time
Love this video!!
I was wondering, would you be able to do a video on the "double Reed juvinate." It's a mini chamber that uses listerine to keep the reeds clean and supposedly makes them last longer. Sounds interesting to me! I would definitely like to know what your opinion on it is.
I haven't spent the money on the ReedJuvinate- a few of my friends bought them and had a few reeds mold. Although this is not a personal experience I thought it best to not spend my money. Have you bought one and had any experiences like this?
Very good!
I was really hoping for a review of the howarth S20C... but thanks for what you presented.
Wow awesome video
Woohoo! Glad you liked it. If you haven't already- be sure to check out the blog. It has Find Your Next Oboe Quiz, Flow Charts, and Moar! :)
I used to play the Yamaha 241
Opus Oboes seem to be pretty good. A lot of music school Teachers here in Europe use them for students.
One time in band camp!
I started out on a Selmer 1492B and played that thing for a year (it was not good) and then my band teacher had a 1984 Fox 330 so that's what I play on currently
I rented a loree during highschool and based on the serial number was 25 ish years old at the time....omg, it was beautiful!
Fast forward about 15 years, i bought a plastic oboe and sadly im too embarrassed to play it but refuse to sell it in hopes to pick it back up.
That loree just sang.....it was such a rich but sweet sound compared to plastic. Granted im no where near the level i used to be but plastic just doesn't resonate the same way
Wish I had come across this video before buying my Yamaha 241! Do you have any videos about reeds?
Thanks! (Nicely done video.)
I know what you mean. But if/when you decide to upgrade it may help! :)
Suzanne Vogt @1qs
Is the Nobel discount code still valid? I tried it and it did not work 😊 thank you so much for this video
I'm just starting oboe and I purchased a selmer signet soloist. Should I look for something different to make the learning process easier?
I would. The oboe is a challenge- having a good foundation will make it more accessible and more fun! :)
Rent one instead.
It's more expensive but sounds great.
oboist makes the sound
Would you purchase a Used cabart or a used fox?
i play flute and piccolo others too but i would like to learn oboe but they look so expensive and so much harder than flute
What is your opinion regarding Buffet’s line of oboes models?
I really liked one that I tried at IDRS last summer, I found this article that I really liked that might be helpful if you are comparing oboes www.oboefiles.com/what-kind-of-oboe-is-right-for-me-guide-for-parents-and-students/
What do you think about bundy oboe?
I’m wondering how I would be able to find a Nobel oboe that I am able to try out before I buy it, I also can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on an oboe any suggestions?
You might consider contacting Miller Marketing. Usually they can offer a trial period on an instrument. Once you decide to buy they authorize your credit card. It might be an option if you are interested. Happy Music Making!
Now on the noble website the oboes have gone up in price by like $500
Nicholas Lucianetti yes, they’ve become so popular the price has gone up. The discount code eryno will still drop the price, though.
Is there such big difference between YOB 241 and YOB 411?
Agustin Roca uh yeah. The 411 has a low b flat, left-f key, and the forked F resonance. The 241 doesn’t have the above. The 411 model also doesn’t have the e ring and the banana key and some other pro models.
You sound best on the Fox. Thanks for the video.
Why do oboes cost so much?
Many of the materials are hand made and require exact fittings. I wish they were less expensive, too.
I am not sure if this is correct but I get the feeling they aren't as common as instruments like the Clarinet or Saxophone which might drive up the price.
They also are not mass produced like a flute or saxophone
I would like to learn oboe and violin.
@@CLM1978 violin is honestly pretty easy compared to winds. I play flute and viola (about the same difficulty as violin) And I would say the hardest part is bow control. Once you learn that it's pretty easy. MY OPINION DONT ATTACK ME
What does “conservatory” refer to?
My son rented oboes until sixteen. He saved up enough money from his part time job to buy a second hand Yamaha Custom. He moved through 2 student ones prior to his Yamaha. I thought that they would be cheap,😮ahhhh no. While still having that Euro is better attitude, I was shocked to find out his teacher moved from Loree to Yamaha. Turns out Loree have gone down hill, unless you’ve got an old one. His custom is just sooooooo much better, crazy. If Yamaha was good enough for his teacher who plays professionally, then I had no issues. It was costing about $800 or so a year over 5 years. But this increased in price as he moved to a better? Student one in the last 3 years.
I was thinking about stepping up to buying an oboe instead of renting a pretty bad oboe for 65 $ a month and I found a really good one for about 500$
What do you think of the Selmer 101?
In all honesty- it is not a fav. I would not go out of my way to purchase one of these. There are better options on the market.
is the discount code over? 🙈
What are your opinions on the Selmer 122F?
I must admit, it's not a favorite. There are too many better options on the market.
Eryn Oft I can't really afford to spend thousands on an oboe, as I am only going to play it as a hobby, so I found a Selmer 122F for $980 (it retails for around $2,500). Would it be worth it for that price?
I think you would be better served to look at a company that offers financing for a higher quality instrument. Pay it off over time, it will allow you to enjoy your hobby.
How about muslady? Is it a good?
i do wanna know this too, someone offered me a good deal for a muslady, but i never heard of it before,
i got an oboe from school but it didn't have pads that you put your fingers on but holes is this just a really beginner oboe or what?
Hi there- I am not sure I can be much help without a photo.
Eryn Oft is it possible to paste photos in the comments
You can always message me through my CONTACT ME portion of my website: www.erynoft.com
I prefer oboe Marigaux

i feel so baddd i bought a selmer not knowing how much it was lacking... AAGGHH XD
That breaks my heart!
My son's on a borrowed Selmer. Just took it for a tune-up and the pro made it absolutely sing.
Play it, enjoy it.
I think the long term solution is stop playing oboe :3
Daheck, Sudden mood change on mentioning Yamaha 241 ?
What is the B flat resonance key you speak of? I have a 60+ year old Gordet oboe that is, as far as I understand a full conservatory oboe (it has all the keys, including the third Octave key), but it doesn’t have the B flat resonance key. What am I missing here? Is this a relatively modern innovation to help improve the tone quality of the low B flat? Also, I’ve seen a rather new and helpful innovation in oboe key work adding key rollers for the pinky keys on the bottom joint to help with going from E flat to D flat. Have you heard of this? I wondering if it’s possible to retrofit them onto my oboe.
Hi there! There is a blog that helps with this- a full diagram of all of the keys is included. This may help you identify the keys we are mentioning in more detail. Here's a link. erynoft.com/2016/09/11/finding-an-affordable-oboe/ Rollers would be fun but I kind of like the option of each pinky working for different note combinations. There are a few moments where sliding is inevitable but it's been an industry standard for years! Rollers are very innovative!
@@erynoft what is the slpit ring for? I jave Fox Renard 330
@@ishfoxergamer1415 It lets you trill from D#-E more easily and makes it easier to slur to high D. I have more details about this and all the keys on my blog. Here's a link. erynoft.com/2016/09/11/finding-an-affordable-oboe/
Finding an Affordable Quality while I am seeing the price of my gaming PC. WTH!. I am a pianist and want to learn the oboe for the sound and for whenever it is needed. Unfortunately, no one plays oboe in my country but saxophone and clarinet.
I'm guessing the discount code expired because it doesn't work.
Dark Chocolate-Rain the discount code for online sales is eryno. They made it different than the code you have if you order via email or phone. It’s still good!

I feel like these are so biased toward Nobel...are these actual opinions?
TMD SB Yes, they are actual opinions and it's okay for you to have yours. This is why we included sound comparisons, key, body and price comparisons- for a well rounded perspective. Have you tried the Nobels?
"Gabriel's Oboe" is a lovely piece of music from the film "The Mission." It is not a brand of oboe. They are trying to help students and parents with a first oboe to buy if their school does not supply one.
Nancy S love that piece!
You think oboes are expensive?
Bassoons are freaking super expensive!!!!
Amazon is selling chinese rosewood oboes (fully equipped) for $700. Unheard of, but they are remarkably similar in quality to any $4k oboe. Yinfenti is the brand. Personally tried it, approved. I dont own one, but ill definitely get it once the funds are available. I used a plastic one back in school days, sounded pretty terrible compared to my classmates wooden one.
Swan lay eggs...
Me: **watches oboe videos**
Me:**Plays bassoon**
Me: **complains why I’m not good at playing bassoon**
I’m just playing, I’m decent :’)
So, basically, only rich people ever even begin playing the oboe...
I've found that school support- programs that have instruments and that offer help with reeds and lessons help balance financial struggles for many beginners. But for beginners wishing to start on their own it can be a financial investment. I find many students get their investment back AND MORE when they receive college music scholarships.
Oboe 's for girls.lady 's ....like the romantic version. Swan la
