    I absolutely LOVED the Race album. I like that they took the risk and did it. For me, it just showed versatility as musicians on their parts. Actually two songs (that I know of for sure) on the Race album were ones they had in their touring set list in mid to late 1987 and they were well received. My personal opinion is I think they wanted to show they were serious musicians that were able to grow and change with the times. Sadly a large majority of people just wanted to box them into one sound and that was that. Brain and James together wrote some great songs and they still stand the test of time. Today they are still one of my favorite band and not many beat them as a live act. Would give anything to see Brian and James write something and work together again, but will probably never happen. :(

      So many people seem to hate the fact that Pseudo Echo tried out a different style for their later songs. Frankly, I like all their songs (from their early days towards their later ones). Yeah, their first songs are quite different from their later ones, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of variety! :D

      I think it was more about expectation than the reality of the music. Like if you played this to someone who didn't know Who it was and asked if they liked it, they would probably say "yes." If you let them listen to Autumnal Park and Love An Adventure albums and get them expecting that style, then played them Race they would be disappointed. No different than the ELO fans take on Discovery album when it came out. Sure it was more "poppy" and "made for radio" but the difference in expectation created a negativity. But Jeff Lynne learned from that I feel. And as a result the last two albums Alone In The Universe (2015) and Out of Nowhere (2019) still capture that iconic Jeff Lynne ELO styling. You hear it and think "oh that's ELO".
      For me, Race is generic AOR, glam, stadium, whatever rock. And while I enjoy the album regardless, there is nothing about it that says Pseudo Echo. Yes, Brian's voice for those who know it, but otherwise generic sounding that could just as easily be a no-name band in a movie soundtrack or any old band.
      I fully understand an artist might want to show their versatility, but Coke didn't become the wide spread thing they are because they wanted to express their ability to make a variety of softdrinks every year or two. ACDC happily admits to making the same album over and over again. Find what works and stick with it. And ultimately be the best at that thing.
      But of course, if the songs never get any airplay, then people don't know they exist. I thoroughly enjoy the Ultraviolet album, but seriously ask, how many Aussies, let alone Pseudo Echo fans, even know it exists? And this is where Brian needs to take a leaf out of the Grateful Dead book and market direct to the fans. Get their contact details and market to them directly. Communicate with them. Not once every few years but often. In 2006 I bought the No Rewind album from Parthenon Huxley himself. Since that time I have received emails from him constantly. Telling me what he is up to, concerts, etc. etc. Pseudo Echo needs to do this.

      RACE is an awesome album, in and of itself, and my personal favorite. That being said, I can see Brian Canham's disdain for it. It was a major departure from everything Pseudo Echo had done up to that point, thus alienating a significant portion of their established audience, and perhaps there was a bit of a "jump on the bandwagon" feel to it. On top of that, Brian couldn't play the "blame the producer" card, since he was one of two producers. Still, I thought he really did shine on this record, as a singer, but even more so as a guitarist. With this record, he really did show what he could do with the guitar.

      I actually saw a clip here on CZcams where they played Funkytown then morphed into this for about 60-90 seconds then went back into Funkytown. It was amazing, sounded just as good as then. Even better it was when these 4 got together for the reunion shows in 2007-08. They were always an incredible live act though.

    Me diga, eles terminarão amanhã
    Sonhar
    Pegue o que puder enquanto pode

    What a strange direction for this band. I never knew they attempted to become a glam/college rock hybrid.
    Anyone know what caused this change? Were they inspired by the sound and image of hair bands of the time, or was there pressure to deliver a more successful product?

    • @georgesidmusic524
      @georgesidmusic524 Před rokem +1

      I agree, it was a strange direction for them as they had already established their popular sound. Very different to the new wave/new romantic sound they had in the early to mid-80's. The most likely reason they went in this direction was that by 1986 Bon Jovi and other "glam rock" bands were becoming hugely popular. Van Halen were also huge. I think it was a marketing move from their record company. I saw them at a club in Sydney in 1986 and they sounded like they were trying to be a heavy metal band. It just didn't suit them and there was not much reaction from the audience. At the end of the show, I met the singer, and told him that whilst it was a good show, I much preferred the old sound. He said that he agreed! Whilst this song is catchy, it does not appeal to me at all. It sounds like bland corporate rock to me. I much prefer the more mysterious sound of the early days!

    I still have this on vinyl -pristine condition cause it never got played-this song was ok but the album sucked. • @MegaKoeyKue
      @MegaKoeyKue Před rokem +3

      Yeah the video is really odd. It's obvious that it was low budget, due to the slim selection of camera angles, minimal stage set, and very basic editing. I know they didn't have the same type of post production tools back then, but compare this to their earlier videos like Living in a Dream. It seems like they just didn't have the funds to promote the band properly anymore.
