Personally I believe that the Essene movement was much broader than just the Qumran community. Just like how there's the Shammai vs. Hillel side of Pharisaism, it's possible that Jesus, John and their Early followers were somewhat Essene orientated but less on the strict side of the spectrum. I mean, the Early Christians believed and did things that fits neither with Pharisees nor Saducees, and certainly not Zealots, but yet are almost identical to things we read about in the DSS. So it's possible in my opinion that the Qumran community and the Early Jesus movement had shared background or influences, from what I've read the Essenes traced themselves back to the Zadok priesthood and talked about a Melchizedek order, the name Melchizedek which interestingly seems to be used with a Messianic tone and in some texts it is even used to substitute the tetragrammaton in OT quotations (which would seem to make Melchizedek YHWH himself), so that could actually have something to do with what the Epistle to the Hebrews is talking about. The texts found at Qumran also teach that the Messiah would be called a Son of God (4Q246 directly parallels the annunciation scene in Luke as J.J. Collins pointed out), additional the Qumran texts appear to indicate that those who wrote them expected a Messiah who was more than just a mere man, the one like Son of Man is explicitly said to be the Messiah and is described as apparently being of heavenly origin, divine and eternal, essentially he is YHWH or at least that is how it looks. The NT doesn't depict the Jewish followers of Jesus as being clueless about him being divine, rather in a number of places they blatantly worshipped him and referred to him as God. This would be very strange unless there were in fact Jews in the 1st century who conceived of the idea that the Messiah would be YHWH incarnate, and the only group that we know of that could have held such a belief are Essenes. For all we know the Qumran community in particular could have been part of a much wider Jewish demographic of Essene beliefs and practices, as directly conflicting the Scribes Pharisees, and not only exclusive to Qumran. It's also interesting that the ascetic lifestyle and traditions of the Essenes are very similar to that of the Syriac Early Church Fathers and the Desert Fathers. Now, I do agree with James Tabor when he says he doesn't think Jesus was by any means a card carrying member of the Qumran community, or any group for that matter, but the community could have got their messianic ideas and interpretations of scripture more or less from the same place and ideological leaning that the early Jesus followers did. It's possible. The Anti-Pharisee rhetoric in the Dead Sea scrolls also parallels the NT. So there are certainly very similar trains of thought, practice, theology and messianic expectations that don't fit with any of the other sects that we know of. I am not saying they were members of any group, but the parallels are much bigger than just "they had the same Bible."
Agreed. What's sad today is that very few Christians in the West have any concept of the 6000+1000 =7000 years of the biblical calendar that might even go back to 1000 BC to the Zadok Priests. Making the 1st and 2nd Comings not a mystery. We also have the 11QMelkezidek scroll telling us when to watch for the "event" that would pay the debt for the iniquities of the world (which was the cross). Now we won't know the exact day and hour of the 2nd Coming because the Jewish day spans 2 days (6pm to 6pm) and Jesus in MAtthew 24/Mark 13 said He'd cut the days short or humanity would cause its own self-extinction (Matthew 24:21-22). But at least we can know the season and watch for the 500+ prophecies in the context Jesus said to watch for. The bare-faced youth with the wand may indicate that Jesus was thought of as a user of magic or wonder worker by some of the early Christians.[35][36]"
That's not entirely wrong to guess, even some Church fathers and commentaries on the scriptures connect the life of St John to resemble the life of the Essenes (IE: Semi Monastic praxes or the lives of the Therapeutae from Alexandria)
He’s probably referencing the Dead Sea scrolls which were from the essenes and they contain a lot of precise info on the messianic prophecies, ken Johnson has some really good work on this subject
I think because there is some scholarly support for the Essenes possibly being subsumed into Christianity, so the idea of Jesus = Essene feels like a small leap from that, as for the Essenes being magic users I have no idea.
Back in the 1990s there was the idea of major hit movies having major elements that helped a lot to make them a hit. One of the elements was a romance between two major characters. No romance, no hit, no money. That's why "audiences" like the idea of a romance between Mary Magdalene and Jesus so much. The real love story is between Jesus and the Church. [I'm saying the discussion of it came out in the 90s, that whole scheme of things has probably been around since the advent of fiction].
I watched a lecture from the Catholic University of Steubenville (quite mainstream and not whacky) where they argue that Jesus was most likely and Essene and that it's all over the Gospels.
Jesus was most definitely not a member of the Essenic community but Dr. Ken Johnson considers the possibility that Jesus' cousin, John, might have studied with or learned from the Essenes. I just raise it as a possibility.
@@themusicman669 I wasn't attacking the Gospel. I was merely stating a finding from Ken Johnson. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in the finished work of Christ alone. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.
@@themusicman669 Pointing out possible connections between anyone in the New Testament (even Jesus!) with any of the different Second Temple groups (Essenes, Zealots, even Pharisees!) is not ipso facto an attempt to invalidate the gospel but help us understand the historical context of the works relating the gospel to us. @@abyssimus I know. I was more so referencing those who would attempt to invalidate Jesus’ teachings somehow by trying him to the Essenes, such as the guy in the Tik Tok in this video.
My understanding is that there was more than one group of Essenes. The group in Egypt may have been into magic, but not the one in Qumran. I understand a good case can be made that John the Baptist was an Essene, and even that the Essenes had a Christophany. Source? Sorry, I haven't paid close enough attention, but check out the work of Dr. Ken Johnson.
St John the Baptist May have been an Essence based on his dress, diet, and behavior ( Dr. John Bergsma of Stuebenville, I believe, is the source of that information).

What he's really saying: "I heard bunches of neat words that sounded cool and spoke to some things I already felt, so I decided to add a bunch of other woo-woo words to them that I knew other 'deep thinkers' like me would appreciate and accept without question! We're smart!"
It's subjective as to what people consider "reliable" sources. But it's interesting that Edgar Cayce talked about the Essenes before the dead sea scrolls were discovered and said they prepared Jesus. It's possible the documents we have on the Essenes don't fully demonstrate how they lived.
I wonder why? Until the year 1524, there was no letter 'J' in the alphabet. The letter 'J' was originally the same letter as 'I. ' The 'father of the letter J' is Gian Giorgio Trissino, an Italian author and grammarian who lived from 1478 to 1550.
Well, I do see the possibility that the essenes knew who Jesus was. When the disciples go to prepare the Last Supper they meet a man at the well. The Essenes were an all male community and would have been one of the only group to send a man to draw water. All they had to refer to Jesus was “the teacher” which supports a familiarity with him. Surely, this was the group in the wilderness to whom John was preaching and Jesus spent time out there as well.
Actually, there is evidence (listened to anpodcast on Remnant Radio on the subject) that the essenes worked in healing through prayer but the power of the Holy Spirit and worked in prophecy but not magic.
To be fair, most scholars agree that John the Baptist was either an Essene or influenced by the Essenes. Almost everything we know about how the Essenes lived and thought is identical to the NT descriptions we have of John. Can't we then say that John was an Essene for all intents and purposes? And since Jesus and John worked together in the same movement, is it really so outlandish to suggest that Jesus was an Essene?
@@rxvyy That many Essenes believed proto-Gnostic ideas doesn't mean that all of them did. You're also forgetting that being in possession of the same Scriptures did not cause everyone to have the same ideas. Otherwise, there would never have been so much disagreement between the Essenes, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Sicarii. And for the ones who didn't have Gnostic ideas, *close* similarities in theology and lifestyle is pretty good evidence. To say that Jesus and John could not have been Essenes because the Gospels never say so, would be like saying that the Essenes never existed because the Gospels never mention them, even though we know that they certainly did exist.
His name was actually Esus but changed to Jesus because of his relation to the Essenes. He also traveled the world retaining spiritual knowledge from age 12-30 which is why the Pharisee Christian religion is terrified of people finding out that 8 gospels and many other books were kept out of the Bible to keep it a government publication and not give the power to the people. This system is the same system that crucified Christ as He would burn their churches if He came back and saw what was going on. Jesus was not a Christian and John, his brother was also an eseene. Constantine and the Council of Nicea along with the anti christ Catholic Church has hidden more than that’s revealed and have archives hundreds of yards long hiding these secrets from the people. The gospel of Thomas gives you the secret to your unanswered prayers in Jesus’s own words!
They hate and are terrified of the gospel. It's really that simple.

Yes!! You got this guy ! He’s always saying something crazy !
IP: what do you think about the possibility that John the Baptist spent time among the Essenes? Just curious.
How about John the Baptist's connection to and/or appropriation by the Mandaeans?
@@tintinismybelgian appropriation.
I see zero resemblance between Mandean theology and John the Baptist. Just seems like a bunch of followers who came up with their gnostic heresies.
The Baptist was a faithful Jew. No weird gods and demiurges.
If it was important or true it would be in the Bible.
@@mikefranklin1253 So, every single piece of information that is true is recorded in the Bible? If something is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, then it isn’t true?
@@ryanhoward8694 Neither the moon landing nor the assassination of Abraham Lincoln are in the Bible. Thus, they are neither important or true events.
Jesus was a wizard trust me michael I was there
Jesus was literally a wizard.
Umm... my dude you realize he was a Jewish mystic? Like... a literal wizard, with like a wand staff and a cloak even
@@binkbonkbones3402 he also had a long gray beard, a pointy hat(not klan related), and a dragon he could summon whenever he wanted.
@@nathanmstroud the proper term is God.

It takes literally one Wikipedia visit to not look so ignorant in the future
"Jesus is sometimes shown performing miracles by means of a wand,[33] as on the doors of Santa Sabina in Rome (430-32). He uses the wand to change water to wine, multiply the bread and fishes, and raise Lazarus.[34] When pictured healing, he only lays on hands. The wand is thought to be a symbol of power. The bare-faced youth with the wand may indicate that Jesus was thought of as a user of magic or wonder worker by some of the early Christians.[35][36]"
Michael Jones drops another one!!!! Thank you so much for your work, sir.
Continue to make them shorts. Pure gold!
I think John the Baptist was an Essene
That's not entirely wrong to guess, even some Church fathers and commentaries on the scriptures connect the life of St John to resemble the life of the Essenes (IE: Semi Monastic praxes or the lives of the Therapeutae from Alexandria)
Nah man everyone knows Jesus was the first founding titan
“There’s evidence but damned if I’m going to tell you what it is.”
He’s probably referencing the Dead Sea scrolls which were from the essenes and they contain a lot of precise info on the messianic prophecies, ken Johnson has some really good work on this subject
This is why freedom of speech is so important. Makes it easy to identify the stupid ones.
Ha! Very true! 🙂
Both of them were stupid here
As yes the Essenes. Top necromancers of their day. Definitely did a lot of magic, and totally didn’t follow Mosaic Law.

I think because there is some scholarly support for the Essenes possibly being subsumed into Christianity, so the idea of Jesus = Essene feels like a small leap from that, as for the Essenes being magic users I have no idea.
We support you brother..in Jesus name be strengthened to spread the message of Jesus...
Please keep doing this. I’ve done extensive biblical research and your stuff is right on the truth.
@inspiring philosophy, why was the last supper/passover meal celebrated on a Thursday? The Essenes practiced passover on a Thursday.
I watched a lecture from the Catholic University of Steubenville (quite mainstream and not whacky) where they argue that Jesus was most likely and Essene and that it's all over the Gospels.
I think John the Baptist was an Essene or a break away faction. That the "Teacher of Righteousness" to him was Jesus.
Jesus was most definitely not a member of the Essenic community but Dr. Ken Johnson considers the possibility that Jesus' cousin, John, might have studied with or learned from the Essenes. I just raise it as a possibility.
Even so, it doesn’t invalidate any of the gospel
@@themusicman669 I wasn't attacking the Gospel. I was merely stating a finding from Ken Johnson.
Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in the finished work of Christ alone. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.
@@themusicman669 Pointing out possible connections between anyone in the New Testament (even Jesus!) with any of the different Second Temple groups (Essenes, Zealots, even Pharisees!) is not ipso facto an attempt to invalidate the gospel but help us understand the historical context of the works relating the gospel to us. For Christians, it shows us how God worked to tie up a lot of loose ends.
@@abyssimus I know. I was more so referencing those who would attempt to invalidate Jesus’ teachings somehow by trying him to the Essenes, such as the guy in the Tik Tok in this video.

“Have you read anything on the Essences?” 😂
"The Essenes practiced magic"
I laughed hardly because of this sentence 🤣
Jesus celebrated the passover dinner a day earlier than the rest of Israel, and the man carrying picture of water was in the essence community.
Tell me you're making stuff up without telling me you're making stuff up
My understanding is that there was more than one group of Essenes. The group in Egypt may have been into magic, but not the one in Qumran. I understand a good case can be made that John the Baptist was an Essene, and even that the Essenes had a Christophany. Source? Sorry, I haven't paid close enough attention, but check out the work of Dr. Ken Johnson.
Prime example of someone who goes with what "sounds good"
Baptized by John, an Essene. Did not Drink, spoke Aramaic....
love your approach
Jesus, the Apostles, the Prophets, the saints... They all got their job titles by performing magic.
St John the Baptist May have been an Essence based on his dress, diet, and behavior ( Dr. John Bergsma of Stuebenville, I believe, is the source of that information).
Once again, no matter how many times that you piss me off.....
You also crack the unholy crap out of me with some of your facial expressions.....the absolute best!!!

Like listening to a child telling his parents the tooth fairy came. "There's books about it, many kids have seen it and saying in the end, ' I know what i saw and what this dollar is proof."😮
This claim is way more widespread than we think.
What he's really saying:
"I heard bunches of neat words that sounded cool and spoke to some things I already felt, so I decided to add a bunch of other woo-woo words to them that I knew other 'deep thinkers' like me would appreciate and accept without question! We're smart!"
They practiced healing.
I never even heard of the Essenes. Thank you precious Servant of God for educating us on all these fallacies about our Lord Jesus Christ 🙏🙌❤️
It's subjective as to what people consider "reliable" sources. But it's interesting that Edgar Cayce talked about the Essenes before the dead sea scrolls were discovered and said they prepared Jesus. It's possible the documents we have on the Essenes don't fully demonstrate how they lived.
That background picture he has creeps me out, this is why God said not to make any graven images
Magic? AKA, miracles signs and wonders. Sounds about right!
Jesus didn't directly interact with them but they Essen did follow Jesus wherever he went to protect him. Not that he needed it but yeah
The Gospel of the holy twelve, the gospel of Mary Magdalene, and most importantly the gospel of the Nazarenes.
Surely, this was the group in the wilderness to whom John was preaching and Jesus spent time out there as well.
man made God in his image!

I love your work bro all I got to say is keep it up man of God ✝️💪🇺🇸💯
Actually, there is evidence (listened to anpodcast on Remnant Radio on the subject) that the essenes worked in healing through prayer but the power of the Holy Spirit and worked in prophecy but not magic.
I am not educated in the essenes but have heard of them. Instantly knew when he said magic that He didn’t even do a Google search at this point lol
