- The Citroen Berlingo is, when you think about it, a connoisseur's machine - an anti-SUV family MPV that doesn't give a stuff about fashion or trends, but lives to make your life a little bit better as it becomes part of your family. Luckily Citroen's brought back petrol and diesel powertrains after a short spell of EV-only Berlingo-ing, and I've got the entry-level Feel model here for a full review, including a driving review, a look at the interior and boot space and - of course - a poke around the cabin.

Not a berlingo but around where i live is a hotted up early model kangoo, lowered, set of fog lights, alloys and recaro buckets, not sure what mechanical upgrades but definitely catches my eye when I see it, brilliant

Boxes on wheels, exactly ! I have a Fiat Multipla and that car has everything I need for everyday and holidays uses. For the fun I'd be happy to have a Porsche or a BMW though ...
Great review thanks. I have just bought the Berlingo XL 130bhp Auto Diesel and I love it. A few cars ago I had a Berlingo. Loved it but the boot was not quite big enough so bought a Spacetourer and have just traded it in as I don't need such a big vehicle anymore. I got almost the price I paid for Spacetourer 3 years ago as part exchange as they are so sought after now. The Berlingo XL is the 7 seater but I've taken out the 2 back seats to give me a very large boot. Never had a problem with any of my Citroens.
2020 Citroen, diesel, 130HP, aut. here. The amount of car, comfort and practicality you get for your money is absolutely astounding!
Being able to just fold the handle, lock the brakes on full sized child carriage and just drop it in the back and still have a full back seat available to you, is amazing.
Not having to take apart a pram sounds like a dream to be honest
Many thanks for this video Tim. I sat in the 2023 model at a local Citroen dealer yesterday afternoon. Whilst the acceleration figures of 11 hours (give or take) for 0-62mph are underwhelming it's potentially a life-saver as I can mount a hoist for my mobility scooter in the boot. This means I will be able to go out on my own without the wife having to remove, assemble, disassemble. & pack away my scooter on each occasion. I love its fun, funky, quirky looks and I look forward to taking one for a test drive. It could well be my first motability car. Strangely, having worked so hard to distance the Berlingo from its van roots, the 2024 revamp is so dull, bland and boring that it looks 100% like a van. If I'm happy with how it drives I hope I can secure a 2023 model eventhough the interior of the new model has an improved spec. One step forward...
Portes coulissantes! They're good looking decent cars. I saw small mpv vans all over Italy and they make great sense.
I really like the Berlingo, so roomy. Diesel still makes sense in so many vehicles. This will be a great little camel of a motor. PS you're right about le portes coulissantes.

Hi Tim, the “redbull can holder” is in fact where the NOB for the advanced grip control goes if you option it. I have this option in mine and it comes in useful for snow, muddy lanes and lay-bys when walking the dog! Love your work 😊

I tried to suggest the berlingo to my son who has two children and loads of stuff , his reply was im not driving a VAN
I think if he tried one he would be pleasantly surprised , especially for all his stuff

Great review i have three year old 54000 mile 1.5d every time i have someone new in it they can't believe how smooth and silent it is im averaging 60+ mpg most of the time only thing has fail is one headlight bulb 100%
You are doing really well...I had two Peugeot partners ( same van) generally getting 45mpg and a headlamp bulb every 6 weeks or so. Both had the obligatory adblue tank fail..final straw was total brake failure at 45k miles...really crappy radio crappy cup holders glove box that only fitted a glove in ...chopped it in for a ford tourneo connect XL...different standard...55 to 60 mpg excellent radio good cup holders nicer looking van...

It is very utilitarian my dear Mr. Rodie; however, I wonder, is the metal mesh division screen removable? If so, it would make a great starting point for a romance wagon.
I was surprised at the mpg figures quoted. My Berlingo diesel returns 47 mpg in urban motoring and did 62 mpg on a 180 mile motorway journey at 65 mph.

My first car was a pre facelift first gen berlingo with a 1.9 non turbo diesel. They don't make cars like these anymore since it only weighted 1266kg and with its independent front suspension it turned in beautifully with the help of bilstein suspension and pirelli cinturado tires. Too bad it was rotting through on the salted estonian roads.

Haha, well with this vehicle you could literally take all the time in the world to enjoy it because you wouldn,t want to ruin your mpg by driving cracy 70mph. It was the best 50mph car I will ever own

Interestingly, I have been thinking of part-exchanging my latest ‘68 reg Cactus for a Berlingo. I don’t like electric cars and I think I’d prefer to stick with a diesel car. I love Berlingo and was thinking about buying XL version for 7 seats. All changed after seeing EuroNCAP test results. Now going for a second hand Q7 instead.

Oooh cool. I see they also have a facelift model this year. Any word on if they will do diesel with the Peugeot Rifter too? I was looking at buying second hand, as I am not set up for electric yet, but may wait and see what the new model is like. This opens up some new options, it was looking a bit sad in the car/van space, my requirement is being able to get my Enduro MTB in the back with both wheels on, it is getting harder to find something.

I am considering this for my son next mobility car. Main feature we need is the sliding door. Current car is ford but no longer being manufactured. I do like the boot space. Does anyone know average time for these to be built?

We use the XL basic version. We are poor now thanks to our twins... On long Autobahn journeys I find the drivers leg room to be very small. Hurts balls to be exact. Other than that its the perfect family car.
I'm a great fan of the Berlingo. It offers superb luxury - no, not wood, leather and soft touch plastics but SPACE. I have traveled far and wide in a friend's one and always appreciate the high seating position with built-in arm rests in the front chairs and fantastic visibility. This one is an elderly diesel but it is refined and rides far better than many modern cars. It has also been very reliable. Another friend has the van version for work with the automatic gearbox and he raves about it.
Stick it in cruise at 60 on the motorway and be amazed how economical and relaxing it covers huge mileages. We've had Berlingo's 20 years 👍
like the Berlingo, so much space for a Subwoofer. Diesel still makes sense in so many vehicles. i'm an electrician and i like the diesel.

I’m getting worried now though I have ordered a Berlingo diesel flair xtr should get it in December/January.
The Citroen website still only offers the e-berlingo with page not found for any other variant.
The bulkhead with mesh behind the 2nd row I do not want that but am now wondering if they are all going yo be the same.
The Diesel has the fixed bulkhead. This car would have been perfect had they not put the bulkhead in. Depening on how it was ordered I'm not sure if it can be cancelled
Have seen many XTR Berlingos and none of them have the bulkhead in the back. Lovely cars. I just bought the XL diesel and it doesn't have a bulkhead. I think its an extra not standard.
Just got home from the dealership.
The bulkhead is put on at the ports it is the only way they can get away with the diesel and petrol engines (new European rules apparently).
Hence the e Berlingo not having one and the pre 2022 models.
It is removable just a couple of bolts.
According to dealership the xtr *DOES* come with a reversing camera.
Will get mine soon and will let you all know.
I now have my Berlingo (3 days) I will put up a video of taking the bulkhead out in the next couple of days.
Definitely has a reverse camera but sat nav is absent apart from phone one.

A necessary return as the diesel suits this in commercial or passenger form my only caveat is the complex emission control on modern diesels and unfortunately the petrol has that hated wet belt cam belt to change every 60k or so would consider the Ford or VW rival to this also.
BEWARE This and the new version in petrol/diesel are graded as light commercial vehicles with the bulkhead. Different tax, insurance plus the big one. Speed limits are not the same as a car. Look up LCV speed limits in the UK.
Reviews: I’ve never bought a car without thoroughly reviewing the reviews! Only once I’ve determined which vehicles are good would I allow looks to come into it. 😊

As mk1 owner for 17yrs. Still perfect although scratched inside. Most versatile reliable, comfy quiet, economical car. Fugly - maybe. Abs superb. I would buy one in hearbeat but 1.2 engine woes with wet built. Don’t want diesel. I think it’s beautiful looking 🤷🏻♂️
The review in the telegraph paints a different picture. That it is the van which has been cobbled together as they messed up stopping ICE. Their report says harder ride than the electric, bulkhead rattle is very loud on motorway. As someone who has driven Berlingo and their other manufacturers variants for 10 years I was so tempted till reading the Telegraph. Is it a hard a ride and noisy, the Berlingo cars where so soft on suspension, thinking harder as van specs. Great review still thanks for posting

@@garywoods765You are driving, like I have in the past the older Berlingo, this is classed as a commercial van as it has a fixed bulkhead. If it was the same as the previous model I'd buy it tomorrow but need test one of these plus you will not get anything longer than about 3 feet in it as that bulkhead is fixed. Also Van insurance needed

The series two underpinnings were based on the Picasso and so a car-like ride and suspension, unlike the series one which was van based. I was under the impression that the chassis on this series was the same as the series two. Also, there are many metal grills which can be bought so as to contain dogs, for instance, in the boot. So if this is classed as a commercial vehicle, does that mean that those vehicles would be similarly classed once a grill had been fitted. There is almost no difference in substance between series 2 and series 3 interior space and the series two was sold as and classified as, an MPV. I don't understand the logic of the change. Isn't the grill removable?

These are the car version of the van version of the car 😂
The EMP2 Platform forms the basis for lots of Stelantis passenger vehicles. C4 and 308 are on these underpinnings.

They will be classed the same as a car not a van due to the seats and windows...the most straightforward way is to check the v5 or with your insurer as if it classed as a van many of the run of the mill insurers wont insure them they will insist that you get commercial veh insurance...the stupidity of lcv speed limits is that a small Berlingo type van would have to adhere to lcv speed limits yet my pick up truck which weighs 2.7 tonnes doesn't ...

Lovely metal bulkhead? 😂 This cuts down the space on the back of the van by a third & makes the back row of seats ridiculously cramped. Did you mention that this is classed as a lgv by DVLA & has a speed restriction on it? Sorry I switched off before. I have a lovely 2013 Berlingo MPV. This 2023 version is a rushed back to market botched adaptation of the van.

In your review you say that Citroen have reintroduced the Berlingo petrol and diesel. I just checked with Citroen UK and they could not confirm this. Please check yourself.
I checked with my local Citroen dealer and it seems you are correct, they seem to know more than Citroen UK!
I was interested in getting one of these - but found out it is classed as a commercial - higher tax, insurance and road tolls etc. And as its a commercial it will be limited on maximum road speeds. And that massive cage is horrendous - that's why the rear seats are so upright. Sorry, but your review should have pointed these things out. I won't be getting one now until they start making it back into a proper passenger vehicle. Doubt if Citroen will shift many of these in this format.
The thing that I'm concerned about the most is apparently your rescrited to 60 mph on motorway and 50 on an 60 road but it's not a commercial vehicle so can someone please tell me if I'm right because even citroen have told me this just asking more than anything else
It's classed as light goods so yes limited, you could get in trouble if something happens and your doing 70.

They missed a trick, an old diesel Berlingo is popular Car to have a boot jump in and go camping in, the electric version is being bought to do the same with but limited on range, the new disel cant be used with a boot jump be cause of the bulk head, had they left the bulkhead out and same spec as the EV but diesel it would fly out, especially motability customers who may be retired etc looking for a car to convert to camper.
Bulkheads are removable,just ask your Citroen dealer.
Removable but leave a mess where it was on the roof and the sears still won't recline.

I have one on order and have asked for the bulkhead to be removed and will have a mobility scooter hoist fitted in the boot,are you saying that the rear seats are totally fixed,don't fold forwards? Looks like I may have not looked into this properly!
@@julianhyams8710 it may be ok for you to fit a hoist in but you can’t fit a boot jump in it with the bulkhead, which was what my original comment referred too, also if its a motability car you cant just ripped out the bulkhead and leave the car in a mess, there are several versions so best to check with your dealer.

Diesel eco stuff among others EGR valve, catalyst SCR, AdBlue and DPF filter. And tons of sensors (temp, pressure, NOx, flow) means huge issue if you don't make long journeys weekly. Diesel was killed by EU regulations.

Couldn't care less about SUV's as they just purely for style and look at me not real practicality like these vehicles, I think in time 4x4 type powertrains and other offroad only features will filter down to these Boxy mpv's .
One thing I HATE about the new generation Berlingos, is the smaller engines they now make with ever larger turbos, which is evident, these vans, are not as reliable as the older generation, as for the ale trick ones,in a word RUBBISH.

What mpg does your 911 give you? Bet it's not much different than the 2 tonnes SUV..if not worse..I had two Peugeot partners CDV for ten years and in that ten years I had a land rover and now a pick up truck.the latter two were my preferred drive so the pug was generally left for my wife's use...much to her dismay..wasn't really impressed with the last pug..or the main dealer so that's now gone..

I'm 19 and I drive a Berlingo and let me tell you if I say "Now, if I can teach you how to drift in a minivan, you're better than 99% of drivers". That is the single phrase that has got me layd the most.

Like your charismatic delivery of a too uncharismatic car.
One sees the appeal of a small bread van style family car. It's a shame about the unforgivably incoherent /fussy styling from the A pillar onwards; the facelifted mk1 Berlingo was so much better visually. (The overhead central spine locker and little skylights or canvas roof also gave it appeal and reasons to choose it over the VW Caddy or Renault Kangoo). This one lacks USPs and character and for £25k new as base model?... hmm a Dacia Jogger for £18k is too tempting, or a second-hand VW Caddy or T5/T6 do so much more, as appealing versatile capacious family transport for the money.
Watch out for the gearbox/clutch issue on the Jogger, put me off woth people waiting months for warranty parts!
The seats are awful, the pedals were not designed for humans and it carries cargo like a pissed whale.
