This must be one of those songs that the band probably feels so weird playing live, yet it sounds so unique when they switch instruments and having Paul sing.
The story of the song came up my news feed. Paul wrote the song and Joe told him to sing it. The instrument swap, I reckon as a singing bassplayer, was from reggae bass being hard to do whilst singing.
I believe Topper was out of the group at this point because of his drug addiction. Paul, Joe, and Mick wanted him to get treatment. This is their first drummer Terry Chimes (aka. Torry Crimes) on the drums. He appeared on their 1st album as well, and toured with them on their Combat Rock tour.
@mary18o3 yep! Indeed, Simonon wrote it all even the melodies. He also did all the instrument to it. He always play guitar during this live sessions coz he felt confusing singing while doing bass. the bass of this are contra-tempo with the melodies so definitely it hard to play along with bass. that's why Strummer does it.
this song gives me chills, the bassline and just feeling of the song is just so revolutionary. My first band covered it, everyone in crowd would just scream the lyrics till they hurt all to this chill bassline.. so intense yet so chill PAUL is god ftw
Clash made this song much better than the album version!!! Mick Jones is the best melodic punk lead guitarist!!! mostly in adding flavors in guitar adlibs! pretty amazing how his guitar goes starting 2:28 onwards!!! The clash is still indeed the only band that matters...
"We've been to 52 countries and played in front of thousands of people; and the one thing those people all have in common is they're listening to shit for music. We're here to alleviate all that." -Mick Jones about The Clash.
@TheBeatlelover999 We can't all be those freaks of nature McCartney or Sting. Good bass highly counterpoint and plenty harder to sing to than strummering. Simenon's developed into a fine bassist but he had to learn on the job with the Clash from the ground up. ie one of us mere mortals despite his looks. Looking forward to seeing him and Mick with Gorillaz. Seeing the Clash in 81 in an acoustically highly-challenged venue was hard on the ears, although wouldn't have missed it for the world.
@MyDenmon He never really tried to be, he didn't even wan't to sing this song, Joe just made him because he was the one that wrote it. According to him he just wanted to jump around on stage. A noble goal I have always thought. Cheers.
+loknloll yeah but my generation doesn't know their names, let alone the name of their band. They're sort of under appreciated now adays was all I meant.
@@loknloll they were punk and much more. One of the things I am more proud of, is that my 18 yo son has a poster of Joe on the wall and knows their music better than me. Before "stranger things" :-)
Soy de Buenos Aires. Escuchen la versión en vivo de Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, supera a la original. Los Cadillacs son admiradores de The Clash y versionan sus temas, a modo de homenaje.
@AndrewMHunter Yeah. Its Pete Howard. This is an unusual line up cos Mick left soon after and Vince White & Nick Sheppard replaced him. Most ppl think Pete joined at same time as them two but he was in slightly earlier. Terry Chimes came in for a little while when Topper got thrown out
punk is still ok today, its just that yknow the good stuff is back underground where punk rock belongs, and back then punk rock was more exposed so yknow.. 90`s were the best for punk! but thats just me.
This looks like a fairly old video but it's news we can use. Guns'o'Brixton. This is no where near as punk as the sex pistols but it's some valuable elaboration about what we mean by the union jack.
@AndrewMHunter Terry Chimes. He was actually their 1st drummer before Topper joined. He originally left because he didn't have the same "vision" as the rest of the band. Topper did. Unfortunately Topper got strung out on heroin so Terry Chimes rejoined. Then they threw Mick out and the rest is history.

to me this is the best song EVER
Paul did an amazing job
There's still lots and lots and lots of good punk bands playing, old and new, but yeah, The Clash are untouchable.
Oh, Paul with cigarette and gum :D Love him so much!

Paul Simonon is, so attractive..
@mary18o3 yep! Indeed, Simonon wrote it all even the melodies. He also did all the instrument to it. The Clash is and always will be relevant to my life
simonon is badass as hell haha, only problem with this version is the bass isnt loud enough, especially considering how good the bassline is
Better than London Calling
One of the greatest songs ever.
this song gives me chills, the bassline and just feeling of the song is just so revolutionary. My first band covered it, everyone in crowd would just scream the lyrics till they hurt all to this chill bassline.. so intense yet so chill PAUL is god ftw
En 🇦🇷 amamos los Clash 🎸🎶💣🍷
They needed to turn up the bass. You can barely here Joe playing.
+Kyle Robles That's cause he was barely playing ;)
good advice. let's just invent a time machine and get back 40 years back!
The plight of the bass player in rock music...
"This ain't The Clash[!]" Oh, it most certainly is!!!!
DRUM AND BASS!
Clash made this song much better than the album version!!! Mick Jones is the best melodic punk lead guitarist!!! mostly in adding flavors in guitar adlibs! pretty amazing how his guitar goes starting 2:28 onwards!!! The clash is still indeed the only band that matters...
Simonon is from Brixton, and he STILL ROCKS!
RIP JS
It's live - the bass lines ain't what ya hear on the studio recording, but it's live, it's The Clash - still inspiring.
So different from studio version, but also unique and lovable!!!
Love it!
Gig was July 82. My first Clash gig😧.
Sunshine Desserts. This was in 83
May of 83* actually.
The only band that mattered.
Rick Hagedorn brother
still matters bruh.. still matters
I was in England when this song was performend
Oh my god this version is so cool.
"We've been to 52 countries and played in front of thousands of people; and the one thing those people all have in common is they're listening to shit for music. We're here to alleviate all that." -Mick Jones about The Clash.
paul is great, its good to see him singing and at the center of things. you can tell hes not used to it, cant play and sing at the same time even! lol
paul simonon, the clash bassist. And it is him on the album

Best Christmas song ever!

Love this! Punk rock at its best!
Wish I had a time machine :(
The Clash respects Reggae! ❤
Big up!
@MyDenmon He never really tried to be, he didn't even wan't to sing this song, Joe just made him because he was the one that wrote it. According to him he just wanted to jump around on stage. A noble goal I have always thought. Cheers.
Joe Strummer is ... mooooooooooooore than just cool.
that word was created for him.
strummer be strumming
Fantastic !!!
Awhh Paul is playing guitar and Joe's on bass! They were/are so talented and under rated.
Under rated? They are regarded as one of the premier punk bands of all f*cking time.
Before "stranger things" :-)
remember watching joey ramone saying that the clash were the only true punk band from england that the one who could possibly defeat them.
SO GOOD !
Clash forever
no bass but he said ''drum and bass'' really is a joker, theyre so 'dont give a fuck' and thats why i love them
his accent is what madee the band man
Sick!
the best song clash did live even tho simmer didn't do bass legend!!!!
Paul Simonon
🔥🔥🔥
The Clash é foda!!!!
Soy de Buenos Aires.

uuuff manooo increible version, saludos desde venezuela@@hernanjavierluna7096
Even when it's Paul's song it's hard to take the camera off of Joe.
@Wakeupdream I agree. The Clash usually has a loud bass in other live performances!
@AndrewMHunter Yeah. Its Pete Howard. This is an unusual line up cos Mick left soon after and Vince White & Nick Sheppard replaced him. Most ppl think Pete joined at same time as them two but he was in slightly earlier. Terry Chimes came in for a little while when Topper got thrown out
Pity they didn’t get the audio output from the mixing board.
the tips of my toes r gettin COLD
The only band that matters
Dropkick Murphys do a fantastic job with this song, if you like the clash you'll also like dropkick Murphys early punk
damn good damn good damn damn damn good good good
i like the cig between his ear and head, that looks badass.
@Khas101
i think you're talking about simonon ...
because bass can't stop playing...
guitar can because there's a second guitar
i was searching for that answer all over the internet... where did you find that?
wow never knew strummer could play bass
ive always prefered this song live to the recording..
yeah ur right
@ShOrtieMAC919 Joe looked cool all the time, He could've made school look cool if he wanted :)
hei hei viva lo clash 51 na veia
Where's the bass, face??? Still Clash, Cash !!!!
hes the one playin the bass
2:25 aaaw : 3
Yow!
🍏❗🍏❗🍏❗
@Khas101 the good ol' wikipedia provides an answer to almost anything
They're not a rock band!!! They're a punk band!!!
punk is still ok today, its just that yknow the good stuff is back underground where punk rock belongs, and back then punk rock was more exposed so yknow.. 90`s were the best for punk! but thats just me.
very good comment you know your clash
This looks like a fairly old video but it's news we can use.
Guns'o'Brixton. This is no where near as punk as the sex pistols
but it's some valuable elaboration about what we mean by the union jack.
That doesn't look like Topper. Anyone know who it is?
It was actually towards the end.
Best version loved the guitar and it was strange joe playing bass?
Yeah, Joe played bass on this song, because Simonon felt uncomfortable playing the bass line and singing.
GUNZ
The only band that really mattered at the end of the day
Bass?
Who's the drummer ? Not Topper Headon for one.
Wheres the bass? Not loud enough
How Simonon can play bass and sing but not play bass and not sing at the same time?))genius
+Ольга Гаврикова It's much harder to sing and play bass than sing and play rhythm guitar. That's why they swapped instruments.
yes, great version anyway
@Khas101
because bass can't stop playing ...
guitar can because there's a second guitar
you just gotta look underground. the mainstream would never let real punk in it nowadays.
Why is joe playing bass here?
@AndrewMHunter
Terry Chimes. He was actually their 1st drummer before Topper joined. He originally left because he didn't have the same "vision" as the rest of the band. Topper did. Unfortunately Topper got strung out on heroin so Terry Chimes rejoined. Then they threw Mick out and the rest is history.
Is paul playing guitar?
@Khas101 Its genrally harder to play bass and sing because bass is plurley plucking
I wish they play it like 2 more minutes...
In what world does that sound like rock the casbah ?
Paul was unable to play the bass and sing at the same time, so he switched guitars with Joe.
2:27 ro 2:37 Just fucking KICKS
